BUÑOL, Spain — Thousands of people descended on the Spanish town of Buñol on Wednesday for the annual La Tomatina festival, one of the world’s most famous food fights.

Participants threw tons of overripe tomatoes at one another, leaving the streets covered in red pulp as the town was transformed into a giant tomato battlefield. The event takes place on the last Wednesday of August and attracts visitors from around the world.

La Tomatina traces its origins to a spontaneous fight involving young people in 1945. It has since grown into an internationally recognised festival and was held this year on August 26, 2026.
The tomato battle in Buñol traditionally lasts about an hour before the streets and participants are washed down, bringing another colourful edition of the famous festival to an end.
