Scholarly works also recognize Anioma as an Igbo sub-group, complete with its own unique dialects and cultural traits. Thus, the shift from Western Region to Midwest Region, then to Bendel State and finally Delta State, didn’t erase the deep-rooted historical, linguistic, and cultural ties of the people. While political boundaries may have shifted, the essence of their identity and history has remained intact.

In light of this historical context, Senator Ned Nwoko's drive for Anioma State marks a significant shift from a well-established historical awareness to a modern constitutional and political initiative. He’s not just fabricating Anioma's past; instead, he’s weaving documented historical truths into the current national dialogue, advocating for their recognition through the creation of a new state. When a party aims for victory, it’s crucial to consider the credibility of the candidates it puts forward to the public.

Recent reports from OpenLife News, dated August 27, 2026, reveal that an investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought to light alleged financial transactions involving around ₦96 billion withdrawn from an account associated with the Delta State Government House Protocol Department during former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa's tenure.

The report suggests that the EFCC's investigation uncovered a pattern of cash withdrawals, some reportedly amounting to hundreds of millions of naira each day, with a significant portion allegedly converted into U.S. dollars. It also claims that officials connected to these transactions were interrogated, and charges including money laundering, misappropriation of public funds, criminal breach of trust, abuse of office, and falsification of financial records are being prepared.

It’s important to note that these are allegations, not convictions, and Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa is entitled to due process and the presumption of innocence. He deserves the chance to fully address these allegations and defend himself in court if charges are filed.

However, from a political perspective, the APC cannot afford to dismiss these developments as insignificant.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳 𝗤𝗨𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗔𝗣𝗖

The real question isn’t just whether Okowa can snag a senatorial ticket.

It’s about whether it makes sense for a party aiming to show Nigerians that it stands for accountability, reform, and responsible governance to back a politician who’s facing serious, unresolved corruption allegations.

If these reports turn out to be true, the political fallout could be significant. Even before a court weighs in on the allegations, the controversy itself could become a major liability during the campaign—especially in a tightly contested senatorial district where voters are increasingly demanding accountability from their leaders.

APC's ambitions for the 2027 elections shouldn’t just be about winning at any cost. The credibility of the candidate is crucial. Public perception is key. The integrity of the party’s platform is essential.

This brings us to a critical question for Delta North:

Is APC really willing to jeopardize its chances in the 2027 senatorial race by putting forward a candidate whose political history is clouded by such serious unresolved allegations?

This is where the Anioma issue becomes particularly crucial.
