Defoliation in plantain/banana farming which we often referred to as Pruning is an important farm practice.

I visited my farm today after 4 days and I realized that some plantain leaves were already folding over, I already know that’s an indication of something.

Your plants communicate with you through many ways and as a smart farmer, you must learn to read these signs and interpret them, maybe via practical experience or theoretical knowledge.

Here, as I stood beside my plantain, I could tell it was already communicating with me when I observed the leaves are folding over.

See, the plantain plant was simply telling me, it’s time to Prune.

I often say it’s very ideal you leave 10-12 leaves on the plant, this is as a result of the knowledge and experience I have had over time doing plantain farming.

Surprisingly, when I counted the leaves on the plant, I could count 13 leaves, that was already excess, hence, the plantain was calling my attention.

Multiple leaves suck the plantain of excess nutrient that it was already trying to get read of some leaves so there could be a balance of the nutrient left to share to other available leaves.

Pruning when the leaves are already dried is cool but early pruning save the plant some energy and enables faster growth.

It limits stress on the plant too by focusing on the limited leaves on it.
