CHAPTER 12 AFTER EIGHT YEARS
For eight years, Oma had prayed for a child.
There had been nights when she cried silently.
There had been mornings when villagers whispered behind her back.
Even Ngozi had sometimes offered words that sounded kind but carried hidden sharpness.
Oma had almost stopped hoping.
Then one morning, everything changed.
She woke feeling sick.
The smell of food made her nauseous, and she became dizzy while standing.
Eze rushed to her side.
“Oma, what is wrong?”
They called the village midwife.
After examining her, the woman smiled.
“Oma… you are carrying a child.”
For several seconds, Oma could not speak.
Then tears rolled down her cheeks.
“Eze…”
Her husband stared at her in disbelief before embracing her.
Their prayers had finally been answered.
Zara was overjoyed.
“A baby brother or sister!”
But that night, Zara dreamed of the river.
Someone was calling her.
A woman's voice.
Soft.
Familiar.
“Zara…”
She woke suddenly, her heart pounding.
And for the first time, she wondered who was calling her from the water.

Zara continued growing into a beautiful and gentle child.
Oma loved her deeply.
Eze loved her too, even though he had never known where she came from.
Nearby lived Ngozi, the wife of Eze’s closest friend.
She often visited Oma’s compound.
Whenever she saw Zara, she smiled politely.
But there was a history behind that smile.
Long before Eze married Oma, Ngozi had secretly desired him.
She had hoped that one day he would notice her.
But Eze never did.
He chose Oma, and Ngozi had never truly forgiven him for it.
Still, she hid her bitterness carefully.
Nobody suspected what lived inside her heart.
Meanwhile, Oma remained cautious about Zara.
Whenever Zara needed to enter the water, Oma secretly took her far from the village.
No one ever saw what happened there.
But lately, Oma had begun feeling strangely different.
She felt tired.
Sometimes she became dizzy.
And one morning, while preparing food, she suddenly had to sit down.
Something else was growing inside her.

Pearl woke suddenly.
Her heart was pounding.
She had seen a child in her dream.
A little girl standing beneath a palm tree.
The girl had looked directly at her.
“Mother.”
Pearl sat upright.
For years, she had forced herself not to remember.
But that single word had broken something inside her.
She went to the edge of the underwater palace.
The ocean stretched endlessly before her.
Her advisor, Ogbuagu, approached quietly.
“You dreamed of her again.”
Pearl said nothing.
“Do you believe she survived?”
Pearl looked toward the surface.
“I don't know.”
“But your dreams have never been wrong.”
Pearl closed her eyes.
She remembered the night she had left the baby beneath the palm tree.
She had believed it was the only way to protect her.
But now something had changed.
The royal pearl beside her throne had begun glowing again.
Ogbuagu noticed it.
“My Queen…”
Pearl touched the pearl.
A single image appeared inside it.
A village.
A palm tree.
And a little girl.
Pearl whispered one word:
“Zara".
