MY TWINS AND I
Chika and Chidi were born on the same day, at the same hour, and in the same hospital. They looked exactly alike. Their mother, Mama Ogechi, always told people, “If you see Chika, just call both names. They will answer together.”
From when they were babies, they did everything together.
They crawled at the same time.
They took their first steps on the same day.
They even lost their first tooth on the same night.
People in their street in Enugu called them “mirror twins.” When one laughed, the other laughed too. When one cried, the other’s eyes filled with tears.
Their father, Mr. Okoye, loved them deeply. He would say, “God gave me two stars in one sky.”
They shared the same clothes, same school bag, same books, and even the same food plate when they were small. If you gave one a biscuit, the other would break it in half and share.
They attended Royal Palm Nursery and Primary School together. Chika was calm, quiet, and always reading. Chidi was playful, funny, and loved dancing. But still, they stayed close.
In secondary school, they were in the same class, sitting side by side. They always got good results. Teachers would say, “These girls are lucky, but also hardworking.”
At home, they shared the same bedroom. It was painted light purple. On the wall was a big sticker that read:
“Twin Sisters Forever – Chika & Chidi”
They had two beds, but they always ended up sleeping on the same one. Between their beds sat a big teddy bear they got on their 10th birthday. They named it “Tumbo.”
Time passed.
They grew older.
They became beautiful young women.
Everyone said they looked like angels. People would stare at them on the road and say, “Are you sure these are not spirits?”
After secondary school, they both gained admission into the same university:
University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
They screamed with joy when they saw their admission letters. Their parents were proud. Mama danced and sang, “My twins are now university girls!”
They packed their things into two big boxes and moved into the same hostel room. Room 212.
That room became their new home.
They decorated it with pictures, posters, and fairy lights. Their beds were close, their books arranged side by side. Everything was perfect.
Chika was studying Mass Communication, and Chidi was studying Theatre Arts. Their faculties were different, but their lives were still joined.
Every night, they would walk to the campus gate to buy noodles. Chidi would tell funny stories. Chika would shake her head and laugh.
One night, as they sat under a mango tree beside their hostel, Chidi looked at Chika and said,
“Promise me something.”
“What is it?” Chika asked.
“No matter what happens,” Chidi said, “don’t ever move to another room without me.”
Chika smiled. “Where would I go without you?”
Chidi didn’t laugh. She just stared at the sky.
Chika didn’t think much of it.
But after that day…
Little by little…
Things began to change.
To be continued...
