With an eye-watering $1 billion in prize money, some of the biggest stars in the game and clubs competing from across the globe, FIFA’s new Club World Cup has all the ingredients to be a huge event.

But the 32-team tournament, which will be played across the USA from June 14 to July 13, has faced criticism and scepticism since the moment FIFA president Gianni Infantino began to float the idea.

As a completely new arrival in an already crowded football landscape it remains to be seen whether the competition proves able to carve out a regular place in the calendar.

Players representatives, such as global union FIFPRO, have warned of excessive workload on players while others have questioned whether fans will turn out in big enough numbers for the group stage fixtures.

“Players will have to perform at the end of an 11-month season with little prospect of getting enough rest before the following season starts,” FIFPRO warned when FIFA formally announced the tournament in 2023.

Certainly the event adds to an already busy schedule for the world’s top players. Inter Milan’s Marcus Thuram and Paris Saint-Germain’s Desire Doue both played in UEFA’s Champions League final on May 31 and then switched shirts to represent their country in the Nations League finals in Germany days later.

They have since rejoined their clubs for the new FIFA tournament in which both sides are expected to advance to the latter stages.

Those games late in the tournament, likely to feature the top European clubs against the best South American sides, should draw big crowds but it remains to be seen how well ticket sales go for the group-stage games with less globally famous clubs from Asia, North America and Africa included.

Captivated
Fixtures such as the June 17 encounter in Orlando between South Korean club Ulsan HD and South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns will certainly require all the power of American marketing to attract a full house.

But FIFA hopes that with broadcasters DAZN offering free streaming of the tournament and the lure of giant club and player brands, fans around the world will be captivated by the new competition.

“We are talking about something never seen before (that will) bring the magic of a national team World Cup to the club level,” Infantino said.

“This tournament will be the beginning of something historic, something that will change our sport for the better and for all future generations who will come to love it as we do,” he added.

In an era when players drive interest as much as, if not more than clubs, the involvement of stars such as Lionel Messi, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe should ensure social media is buzzing.

Twelve of the 32 teams come from Europe including freshly crowned Champions League winners PSG, the continent’s most successful club Real Madrid, Premier League giants Manchester City and Chelsea, and German powerhouses Bayern Munich.

South America’s six teams are made up of four Brazilian clubs, including Copa Libertadores winners Botafogo and their Rio de Janeiro rivals Flamengo, along with Argentina’s two biggest clubs River Plate and Boca Juniors.

Adding local interest, there are three teams from Major League Soccer — Los Angeles FC, the Seattle Sounders and Messi’s Inter Miami, as well as a pair of clubs from Mexico in Pachuca and Monterrey, who can expect plenty of support in the USA.

Four clubs represent Africa, including Egypt’s storied Al Ahly who open the tournament against Messi and Miami on June 14, while Asia’s quartet includes Saudi club Al-Hilal.

American fans regularly snaffle up tickets for the big European teams who come to NFL stadiums to play pre-season friendly games and so the added competitive element should see healthy crowds for the headline performers.

Questions over how seriously the clubs would take the new competition became somewhat muted after FIFA announced the huge prize fund.

The billion dollars are split between participation fees for all clubs and the rewards for those going deep in the tournament. The winner could leave with as much as $125 million.

FIFA’s current plan is for the tournament to be held every four years but it will be interesting to see if that changes after the first test of its appeal.

If it is a flop, the critics will likely re-appear and question whether it is needed at all but should it be a roaring success, it is not hard to imagine some at FIFA pushing for it to be held on a more regular basis.

Justice D. E. Osiagor of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has convicted and sentenced nine Chinese nationals to one-year imprisonment each for cyber-terrorism and internet fraud, following their arrest in a major sting operation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

According to a statement on Tuesday via X by the EFCC, the convicts, identified as LI D**g, Deng Wei Qiang, Huang Bo, Xiong Zhen, Lai Rui Feng, Zhao Xiao Hui, Lui Hai Rong, Lui Gang, and Du Ji Feng, were part of a syndicate of 792 alleged cryptocurrency investment and romance fraud suspects apprehended on December 19, 2024.

The EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 charged the nine individuals in February 2025 with one count of separate charges of cyber-terrorism and internet fraud.

The charge stated, “That you, LI D**g, Deng Wei Qiang, Huang Bo, Xiong Zhen, Lai Rui Feng, Zhao Xiao Hui, Lui Hai Rong, Lui Gang and Du Ji Feng, sometime in December, 2024 at Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, conspired amongst yourselves to commit an offence to wit: cause to be accessed computer system used for the purpose of destabilising and destroying the economy and social structure of Nigeria and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 27 (1) (b) and punishable under Section 18(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act 2015.”

Initially pleading “not guilty,” the defendants reversed their pleas to “guilty” during a court session on June 5, 2025.

Prosecution counsel, Nnaemeka Omewa, urged the court to convict and sentence them accordingly, a request supported by the defence counsel.

Justice Osiagor subsequently sentenced each defendant to one year in prison, effective from their arrest date of December 10, 2025, and imposed a fine of N1,000,000 on each.

The court further ordered that the convicts be repatriated to their country of origin within seven days of completing their sentences, as directed to the Comptroller General of Immigration.

Additionally, mobile phones, computers, laptops, and routers seized during the EFCC’s “Eagle Flush Operation” were forfeited to the Federal Government.

A coalition of youth groups in Rivers State has called on President Bola Tinubu to restore democratic governance in the state and reinstate Governor Siminalayi Fubara ahead of the Democracy Day on June 12.

The coalition under the aegis of the South-South Youths Initiative and the Coalition of Rivers State Youth Bodies said the suspension of Fubara represents a direct threat to the constitutional order and endangers the foundations of democracy in the country.

The call was contained in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, signed by Imeabe Oscar, National President of the South-South Youths Initiative who doubles as Chairman of the Coalition of Rivers State Youth Bodies and sent to newsmen.

Oscar described the president’s actions as “reckless, unconstitutional, and an affront to Nigeria’s democracy.”

The statement reads in part, “As we commemorate Democracy Day on June 12, we reflect on the significance of democratic governance and the rule of law in our nation”.

“However, recent events in Rivers State have raised concerns about the health of our democracy.

The suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly by President Bola Tinubu’s administration has dented our democratic process said to be practiced in Nigeria.

We urge President Tinubu to prioritise the restoration of democratic order in Rivers State by reinstating the suspended elected official.”

He continued, “The Nigerian Constitution outlines impeachment by the State Hous!e of Assembly as the sole legitimate process for removing a governor, making this suspension unconstitutional”.

The youth groups expressed concern over what they described as the erosion of democratic values in Rivers State, noting that the crisis has attracted international attention and could destabilize Nigeria’s fragile democratic structure.

“The suspension of elected officials sets a dangerous precedent, threatening the autonomy of states and the will of the people.

“The president’s actions have been described as reckless, unconstitutional, and an affront to Nigeria’s democracy.

“The crisis in Rivers State has drawn international attention, with concerns about implications for Nigeria’s democratic stability”.

The groups therefore demanded the immediate reinstatement of the suspended officials and called on all Nigerians to defend the principles of democracy, federalism, and the rule of law.

The statement further reads, “We call on the federal government to respect the democratic process and reinstate Governor Fubara and the suspended lawmakers.

“We also urge Nigerians to remain vigilant and defend our democracy against any form of manipulation or erosion.

As we planned to celebrate Democracy Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to the principles of democracy, federalism, and the rule of law.

We must work together to ensure that our democratic institutions are strengthened, not weakened”.

Taiwan’s opposition-controlled parliament approved Tuesday a pay increase for military service members, in a bid to address a manpower shortage and retain soldiers in the face of Chinese military pressure.

China claims Taiwan is part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to bring the self-ruled island under its control.

The main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party and Taiwan People’s Party passed amendments to an armed forces pay act, granting volunteer service members an additional monthly allowance of NT$30,000 (US$1,000).

The law previously did not specify the exact amount for allowances.

It is on top of the increases announced by President Lai Ching-te in March.

“The armed forces are facing new types of operational needs… allowances should be increased to reflect the sharp rise in unit duties and training frequency,” the KMT said in the document outlining the proposed changes.

By significantly raising allowances and adding an adjustment mechanism, the aim is to improve recruitment incentives and retain outstanding talent.”

Other changes passed by lawmakers Tuesday were for conscripts to receive no less than the minimum wage, additional pay for combat units, and overtime.

Premier Cho Jung-tai, who belongs to the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, said the government would challenge the amendments after the cabinet was not consulted as required by the budget act.

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Monday inaugurated a 2.5MVA injection sub-station to Udomi community in Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State.

The governor, accompanied by top officials, was at the injection station to inspect the project, which is already completed and ready for use.

He said the people had not experienced such development before, but that this achievement would open up the communities and other communities that would be connected to the sub-station.

The governor said, “I feel very happy and great, bringing development to the people of these communities. This is a new development for the people as they are feeling the impact of governance, which should be closer to the people.

“You can see the happiness in the faces of the people as they had not experienced governance in a long while, but my administration will ensure the people of Edo State feel the impact of good governance.

The State will witness more developmental projects as we have keyed into the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

This sub-station will surely open up this area and bring economic development to the people of this locality as businesses will thrive with a constant electricity supply.”

The Business Head, Technical Operations at the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, Engr. Mokwenye Jidenmah commended the governor for the sub-station and assured that Udomi and other communities would benefit from the project.

This is a 2.5 MVA injection sub-station which is meant to serve over nine transformers around here, bringing down the 33 KVA line to 11 KVA lines.

The red line is to be energized at 11 KVA. Before the end of today, the community will start enjoying electricity,” he said.

The electricity extension phase 11 will connect six communities, which include Udomi 1, Ujabhole 1, Unogbo, Idimoghodor, Ibhioloulu, and Afuda, all in Uwessan.

The governor, who also visited the site for the construction of Edo State College of Nursing, Health Sciences and Technology, commended the Edo State House of Assembly for ensuring the passage of the bill.

I want to thank the Edo State House of Assembly for their support in ensuring that they passed the Bill for the Edo State College of Nursing, Health Sciences and Technology Law, Udomi, 2025, which I have signed.

This ongoing project is made possible due to the action of the lawmakers. Work is ongoing. We are serious about the project. Edo people should expect more projects,” he said.

10/06/2025

Education development advocate and CEO of Educare, Alex Onyia, has called for sweeping reforms in Nigeria’s education sector, including the enforcement of stricter academic qualifications for teachers and significantly improved remuneration.

Onyia, in a series of social media posts on Monday, proposed that the minimum qualification to become a teacher in Nigeria should be a master’s degree, with a minimum of a second-class upper division (2:1) in the first degree.

Being a teacher should be something of great pride, and the academic standards should be very high,” he said. “If I were the one in charge, I would do this.”

He also recommended a starting salary of ₦400,000 monthly, up from his earlier suggestion of ₦300,000, along with the provision of a brand-new car to be paid off by the teacher over time.

The best should train the coming generations,” he stressed, citing Finland as an example where all primary and secondary school teachers must hold a master’s degree.

This significantly transformed their education which is one of the best globally. Their teachers are paid very well.”

Onyia further proposed a mandatory biannual licence renewal for teachers, tied to continuous training and certification exams.

The proposal, however, has drawn mixed reactions.

A social media user, Ikenna, disagreed with the requirement for a master’s degree, saying, “A bachelor’s degree holder is more than qualified to handle problems at the primary and secondary school levels. It’s not about the class of degree.”

Another user, Mikail, said implementing such a standard would disqualify more than half of schools in Nigeria, but added that trimming out substandard schools might help set better benchmarks.

J. Opara supported higher standards but called for flexibility, saying, “I think it should be a degree in Education or if you’re from a field outside education, you should do a PGD in education for one year.”

He also advocated for mortgage and car loans, subsidised health care and school fees for teachers, and foreign training tied to service bonds.

Kolawole emphasised the need for practical teaching ability over academic grades.

Minimum requirements should be a proven ability to actually impart knowledge… not just good BSc and PG grades.”

Other commentators raised concerns about rural implementation and accessibility. Holly Aboh questioned the feasibility in low-income areas like rural Niger State, while Georgevin Jr. said the proposal could make education “more inaccessible.”

Some, like , called for curriculum reforms and better funding for teacher training, while Chyko stressed, “Passion trumps certificates every day, twice on Sunday.”

Adégòkè also recommended more focused B.Ed programs over master’s degrees and added, “₦300k/month for teachers with Masters Degrees? The pay should reflect the value they bring.”

Onyia, however, remained firm on his position, stating, “Within a year, Nigeria education will be transformed” if the proposed measures are implemented.

10/06/2025

A former governor of Ebonyi State and Minister of Works, David Umahi, has described opposition elements championing a coalition against President Bola Tinubu in 2027 as faceless and lacking credibility.

According to him, the President’s achievements in governance and national integration strategy were enough to return him to A*o Rock by 2027.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai and other politicians have been in discussion over a coalition movement to unseat Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.

Other leaders of the coalition are the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, the former National Vice Chairman (North West) of the APC, Salihu Lukman, among others.

Speaking in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, during the 2025 Sallah celebration with the Muslim community, Umahi said Tinubu had delivered quality leadership to Nigerians and deserved a second term.

He urged the South-East region to rally behind the President, crediting him with reversing years of federal neglect in the region.

He said, “Before now, many South-East states had no federal projects. Today, the federal presence is visible across the region. That is what true national integration looks like.”

He lauded the President for appointing individuals from the South-East zone to strategic positions in government, including himself as Minister of Works, the Chief of Naval Staff, and the Minister of Science and Technology.

He described these appointments as significant steps toward reintegrating the South-East into national governance.

We lost political ground in the past, but this government is bringing us back. It’s not yet perfect, but we are no longer left behind. We must acknowledge that and support the President,” he added.

Umahi also urged residents of the zone to reject divisive rhetoric and embrace constructive engagement with the Federal Government.

The South-East must count one before counting two. We need reintegration, not isolation. President Tinubu has started this process—we must not waste the opportunity,” he stated.

The minister lauded President Tinubu for fostering what he described as an “unprecedented level” of interfaith harmony and national unity.

He further described the President’s decision to lead a Nigerian delegation to the Vatican for the Pope’s inauguration as a “unique and historic” gesture that surprised many Christians and highlighted a new era of religious tolerance.

10/06/2025

The Federal Road Safety Corps has commended the management of the Federal Medical Centre Jabi, Abuja for taking decisive action against staff alleged to have neglected an accident victim.

The FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, said this in a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide on Tuesday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria, reports that the victim had been rescued from a crash scene within the nation’s capital by a good Samaritan and was taken to FMC Abuja for treatment.

Mohammed emphasised the imperatives of timely and adequate medical attention in reducing mortality rates and improving outcomes for crash victims.

He called on all healthcare providers to adopt a more proactive approach in responding to emergencies and saving lives of rescued crash victims.

He also condemned the several rejection of crash victims from FRSC operatives by hospitals.

He revealed that the National Road Traffic Regulations (2024) specifically frowns at hospitals rejecting crash victims.

This, he said, was with detailed provision of adequate punishment for negligence, or any form of misconduct that compromised established regulations on handling of crash victims.

We urge healthcare providers to prioritise the welfare of crash victims and uphold the highest standards of professionalism to save their lives,” he maintained.

The FRSC boss reiterated the Corps’ commitment to collaborate with healthcare providers and other stakeholders to enhance road safety and save lives.

By working together, we can reduce incidences of crashes fatalities to the barest minimum, and improve response to emergencies,” he added.

The corps marshal commended the good Nigerian who single handedly carried out the rescue of the victim.

Mohammed called on citizens to emulate the sense of patriotism by joining hands in promoting a culture of safety, discipline, and professionalism to make a difference and save more lives.

NAN reports that the FMC management said eight of its staff members—including four doctors, two nurses, and two attendants—are currently under investigation for alleged professional negligence.

The hospital management told newsmen that any staff member found guilty of dereliction of duty would be held accountable.

The hospital’s Head of Clinical Services, Bioku Muftau, confirmed that the accident victims allegedly abandoned by hospital personnel—featured in a viral video circulating on social media—have been treated and discharged.

Muftau said the patient with a head injury, who appeared in the video and drew widespread public concern, was stabilised and discharged the same day he arrived at the facility.

05/06/2025

Oando Plc, on Wednesday, announced an increase in its Reserve Based Lending (RBL2) facility to $375 million.

A reserve-based lending facility is a type of loan commonly used in the oil and gas industry, where the amount a company can borrow is determined primarily by the value of its proven oil and gas reserves. Financing arrangements for the acquisition, development, and operation of oil and gas assets have commonly been structured as RBLs.

The facility refinancing secured was led by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) with the support of Mercuria, extending the final maturity date of the facility to January 30, 2029.

Under this model, the amount borrowed by Oando is directly tied to the size and value of its proven reserves, standing at 1.0 Bnboe. This is referred to as the Borrowing Base.

This upsizing was a result of the company’s progress in deleveraging, having reduced the original $525 million RBL2 facility, signed in 2019, to $100 million by the close of 2024.

Speaking on the feat, Group Chief Executive, Oando, Wale Tinubu was quoted to have said:

“We are pleased to have completed the upsizing of our RBL2 facility, a strategic milestone that reinforces our commitment as Operator of the Oando-NEPL JV to maximising the value of our expanded asset portfolio.

“Our Joint Venture holds extensive reserves with the potential to generate over $11 billion in net cashflows to Oando over the assets’ life. This working capital facility is a critical enabler towards efficiently extracting and monetising these resources.

“We appreciate the continued partnership of Afreximbank and Mercuria, whose unwavering support underscores their alignment with our long-term focus on maximising production, optimising asset performance, and delivering sustainable value to all stakeholders.”

It stated that the newly secured capital injection would be strategically deployed to aggressively pursue key growth initiatives, including accelerated drilling campaigns, critical infrastructure upgrades across its operations, and the implementation of advanced operational efficiencies throughout its portfolio.

These strategic investments directly support the company’s stated ambition to significantly increase its production levels to 100,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd) and 1.5 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of gas per day by the end of 2029.

The development followed Oando’s $783 million acquisition of the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) from Italian energy company, ENI, in August 2024.

This acquisition expands Oando’s operational landscape, incorporating twenty-four currently producing fields, approximately forty identified exploration prospects and leads, twelve key production stations, a network of approximately 1,490 km of pipelines, three gas processing plants, the Brass River Oil Terminal, the Kwale-Okpai phases 1 & 2 power plants boasting a total nameplate capacity of 960MW, and other associated infrastructure.

The development comes after the company on Wednesday announced a record 267 per cent increase in its Profit After Tax (PAT) for the financial year ended December 2024, on the back of its recent successful acquisition of the Nigerian Agip Oil Company Limited.

In a statement on its audited financial results for the period under consideration, Oando stated that its profits rose significantly from N60 billion in 2023 to N220 billion in 2024, driven mainly by higher upstream output and FX gains.

It recorded a revenue rise of 44 per cent to N4.1 trillion in 2024 from N2.9 trillion the previous year, while reserves grew by 95 per cent from 505 million barrels in 2023 to 983 million barrels of oil equivalent last year.

The company noted that its $550 million crude prepayment contribution to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company’s (NNPC) Project Gazelle.

Recall that Oando played a pivotal role in Project Gazelle, a $3.3 billion crude oil-backed forward-sale finance facility sponsored by the NNPC and arranged by Afreximbank, with a view to enhancing volume security.

In his remarks on the release of the financial statement, Wale Tinubu described 2024 as a ‘defining year’ for the company, stating that looking ahead, 2025 will be the company’s year of ex*****on.

In all, capital expenditures totalled N19 billion in 2024, down from N45 billion in 2023, reflecting the focus on completing the NAOC acquisition, while development activity is expected to ramp up in 2025. Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) production also decreased by 35 per cent, while gas was down 5 per cent.

Oando stated that its zero routine flaring programme remains on track for 2027 completion, in line with national and Joint Venture (JV) commitments, with a 92 per cent reduction achieved to date.

In terms of its clean energy drive, Oando stated that its electric mass transit programme delivered 121,145 km of service, transporting 205,152 passengers and avoiding over 163,500kg of CO₂ emissions and secured 5,100 tons/month PET offtake commitments, progressing the development of a recycling plant. It further highlighted the launch of 50 new electric buses.

It said the company is focused on post-acquisition optimisation and accelerated value delivery across upstream assets, with a production guidance of 30,000–40,000boepd and trading guidance of 25–35 million barrels of crude oil as well as 750,000–1m MT of refined products.
