Subject: Appeal Against Unfair and Heartless Increase in House Rent in the Federal Capital Territory
Your Excellency,
On behalf of concerned residents of the Federal Capital Territory, I, Wolemento, Founder of EyeOfAbuja, humbly write to bring to your attention the urgent and heartbreaking situation tenants are facing due to the unregulated and unfair increase of house rent across Abuja.
It is disheartening that landlords continue to impose outrageous rent increments without improving the state of their properties. Many of these houses are situated in unhygienic environments that threaten human health, yet rents are rising beyond the reach of average residents. For instance, a self-contained apartment that once went for โฆ500,000 is now being rented for โฆ800,000. In Lugbe, a two-bedroom flat goes as high as โฆ1.7 million despite poor roads and lack of water. Shockingly, in KujeโAA2 Zone 1 near Dunamis Junctionโa two-bedroom flat is given out for โฆ1.2 million, excluding other charges.
This situation is extremely unfair and unsustainable, especially when compared with the current minimum wage. The average civil servant and low-income earner can no longer afford a decent home in Abuja. If this continues unchecked, it will further widen inequality and worsen the housing crisis in our nationโs capital.
We therefore appeal for your urgent intervention to:
1. Establish a regulatory framework to control arbitrary rent increases in the FCT.
2. Ensure that any rent increment must be tied to visible improvements in the property.
3. Mandate that tenants receive prior notification before any rent adjustments.
4. Provide a system that protects average and low-income earners from exploitation.
Your Excellency, the people of Abuja look up to your leadership and compassion. We believe that under your administration, hope can be restored to tenants who are daily struggling under the burden of unfair rent practices.
