🚨🔵Xabi Alonso’s use of the double pivot is going to bring out the best in Enzo Fernández.I believe Enzo is perfectly primed to play the same role Granit Xhaka thrived in under Alonso.
Xhaka was also labelled defensively suspect and deployed further forward — just like Enzo — before Alonso signed him and transformed him into a far more complete player.
Alonso’s teams play with very low possession depth, meaning the distance between defence, midfield and attack stays minimal.
This setup is perfect for midfielders who aren’t elite out of possession, as it reduces the space they have to defend and keeps teammates close for support.
On top of that, Alonso wants his two pivots to stay tight and connected, which should effectively mask Enzo’s defensive vulnerabilities.
As I’ve said before, if Enzo and his representatives are smart, they should be doing everything possible to stay at Chelsea and play under Alonso. He could take Enzo’s game to another level entirely. I’m desperate to see it.
