EBUKA ONUNKWO WINS NDC ANAMBRA SOUTH SENATORIAL PRIMARIES IN LANDSLIDE VICTORY

Anambra State, Nigeria – May 29, 2026

Industrialist and philanthropist Chief Ebuka Onunkwo has emerged victorious in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial primaries for Anambra South, securing the party’s ticket in what party members have described as a landslide win.

The primaries, held across key venues in the seven local government areas, drew large crowds of supporters who chanted and celebrated as Onunkwo arrived at the election grounds. Videos from the event show enthusiastic supporters besieging the Ihembosi billionaire at the various venues, chanting in support of his candidacy.

In some of the results declared, Chief Ebuka Onunkwo secured over 95% of the votes cast, highlighting the scale of his acceptance across Anambra South.

For example, in Ekwusigo he polled 1,556 votes against 56 for his closest challenger, Retd. Col. Jeoff Onyejegbu. In Orumba North, he scored 831 votes while his closest rival in that LGA, Winston Udeh scored 7 votes. In Nnewi South, he led with 1,209 votes ahead of Winston Udeh, Onyejegbu, and Emmanuel Chikelo, who polled 62, 17, and 10, respectively.

The pattern was similar in Ihiala, where Onunkwo got 697 votes compared to his closest rival, Chuma Nzeribe, who got 37 votes.

Party officials say the wide margins reflect strong grassroots support for Onunkwo’s candidacy under the NDC ahead of the 2027 elections.

Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, founder of Seahorse Lubricant Industries Ltd, defected to the NDC from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) about two months ago after attending the party’s National Convention in Abuja. He had previously contested the APGA ticket for the same seat in 2024 but was asked by party leadership to step down for Senator Emma Nwachukwu—a decision that did not sit well with many residents of Anambra South senatorial district.

Speaking after his declaration to join the NDC, Onunkwo said the move reflects his commitment to honour the promise made to supporters “to be on the ballot and represent their interests at the national level.” He pledged to focus on economic opportunities, youth empowerment, and community development for Anambra South.

Reactions from party members and supporters online have been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing confidence that Chief Ebuka Onunkwo will win both the primary and the main election.

The results remain provisional until officially declared by the NDC national headquarters upon remission from the various state chapters.
