How I Started Designing with Zero Confidence and Free Apps – And What I’d Do Differently Today

My first “designs” were honestly terrible. Made with Corel Draw, saved in low resolution, text flying everywhere. But I was proud of them because I did it myself. No formal training. Just trial, error, and a whole lot of deleting and starting over.

What kept me going? Curiosity. I’d see flyers online or posters on walls and ask, “How did they do that?” Then I’d go back, open Canva or a free background eraser, and try to recreate it.

Most days, I doubted myself. I wouldn’t even share my work. I’d think, “Real designers don’t use free apps.” But I kept creating. Quietly. Repeatedly. And little by little, my designs started to look better.

If I could go back, here’s what I’d change:

1. I’d stop waiting to feel confident. Confidence comes after the doing, not before.

2. I’d invest time in learning, not just copying. Understanding the “why” behind good design would’ve saved me time.

3. I’d put myself out there sooner. Growth lives outside the comfort zone.

Free apps gave me access. Practice gave me progress. And now? I design with purpose—and yes, still use free apps sometimes. It’s not about the tools. It’s about the vision, the effort, and the courage to begin—even when you’re unsure.
