There is a woman in my street whom I have personally dropped off at the market more than ten times. Her husband has three cars, yet she routinely takes Keke to the market.
This morning, I felt compelled to advise her. I was driving to my farm when I saw her, as usual, trekking along the road in search of a Keke.
What she told me afterwards was deeply heartbreaking. I genuinely had to fight back tears.
Whenever you see me emphasising the importance of financial independence before marriage and the need to marry a kind, considerate and compassionate man, please do not dismiss it as mere rhetoric. There are realities behind these words that many women endure silently.
She is currently TTC mom and according to her, her husband has told her that she can only learn how to drive after she gets pregnant.
His reasoning?
That there is no point in her driving alone to the market and “wasting fuel” when she can simply take a Keke for ₦500 and get to Eke Awka.
There are other things she told me that I cannot disclose here because they are deeply personal. But I left that conversation with a completely different perspective.
I am patiently waiting for the day I finally meet her husband. Because there are some things a man needs to hear from another person..not to insult him ooo but to make him genuinely reflect on how his actions and words affect the woman he married.
Ladies, please take financial independence seriously. Learn a skill. Have something you can call your own. Learn to drive. Build yourself.
And above all, when choosing a life partner, don’t look only at what a man owns.
Look at his heart.
A man can have three cars, several houses and plenty of money, yet still make his wife feel like she is asking for too much simply because she needs basic consideration.
Marry a kind man. E get why. ❤️
