"He Was My Best Friend for Life" — Francis Okibedi affirms
By Ifeanyi Ndukwe (Saint), Owerri
The quiet town of Amiri in Oru East LGA, Imo State, stood still as it bid farewell to one of its most illustrious sons, Rt. Hon. Dr. Alphonse Okechukwu Okibedi, a revered philanthropist, elder statesman, and political icon.
At 88, Sir Okibedi may have taken his final bow, but his influence continues to echo through the lives he touched and the community he helped build.
Amid the dignitaries, community leaders, and well-wishers who thronged Amiri for the solemn funeral rites, one tribute stood out not for its grandeur, but for its raw honesty and heartfelt emotion.
His second son, Francis Okibedi, spoke not just as a mourner, but as a son who had lost his best friend, mentor, and lifelong role model.
“My dad and I shared a special bond,” Francis shared. “He took me everywhere; to meetings, events, and village gatherings. He made sure I was involved, and he led me by example.”
Far from the typical strict disciplinarian, Sir Okibedi was described as a man of balance and wisdom, a father whose scolding came with patience and love, and whose discipline was laced with gentleness.
“He had a unique and soft way of correcting us. He made sure we never lacked any good thing,” Francis added.
Sir Okibedi was not only a father to his biological children but also a father figure to many in his community. Through his philanthropy and political leadership, he championed education, community development, and social equity.
“He didn’t just raise a family,” Francis emphasized. “He built a legacy; a roadmap for economic and social growth. My father's name will remain a guiding light, not only for our family but for the people of Imo State.”
The funeral rites were attended by notable personalities from across Imo and beyond. As prayers were offered and tributes poured in, one thing was clear: the late Sir Alphonse Okibedi lived a life of purpose, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the greater good.
In life, he led with humility. In death, he is celebrated with honour and in the heart of his son, he remains not just a memory but a best friend for life.
