The entire village square became silent.
The chief slowly lowered his cup.
"His car?"
Obinna forced a laugh.
"It's... a business arrangement."

But before he could explain, the second man opened the SUV.
He removed Obinna's first suitcase.
Then another.
Then his travelling bag.
Everything was placed in the middle of the celebration.

Obinna rushed toward them.
"Please! At least put my things somewhere else!"
The first man ignored him.
"Oga said you were supposed to return his vehicle yesterday. Give us the key."

Mama Obinna pushed through the crowd.
"Obinna, what are they talking about?"
The chief pointed at the SUV.
"Young man, does this vehicle not belong to Chief Obinna?"

The man looked confused.
Then he laughed.
"Chief who?"
Obinna closed his eyes.
That question finished him.
"This is our oga's car. Obinna works for him in Lagos."
People gasped.

Slowly, Obinna handed over the key.
The men entered the SUV and drove away.
Obinna remained in the village square.
No SUV.
No millionaire appearance.
Just Obinna, his sunglasses...
And three bags on the ground.

Then Adaeze walked toward him.
"So, Obinna..."
She folded her arms.
"What exactly do you import?"

Obinna's boss wanted his SUV returned immediately.
Obinna begged.
"Sir, please. Just two more days."
His boss refused.
Finally, Obinna promised to return the vehicle the following morning.

There was just one problem.
The village was holding a celebration in his honour that evening.
Obinna made a plan.
He would enjoy one final night as "Chief Obinna," then quietly disappear before sunrise.

That evening, the village square was packed.
There was food, music and dancing.
The chief publicly praised Obinna for everything he had promised the community.
People cheered.
Obinna adjusted his sunglasses and waved like a politician.
For a moment, even he almost believed he was rich.

Then headlights appeared at the entrance to the village square.
Another vehicle drove in.
Two men stepped out.
Obinna recognized them immediately.
His smile disappeared.
They were from his boss.

One of the men walked toward him.
Obinna quickly whispered,
"Please, can we talk somewhere private?"
The man frowned.
"Private for what?"
Then, loud enough for everyone to hear, he said:
"Oga said we should collect his car."
The music stopped.

Obinna promised to contribute a huge amount toward repairing the community hall.
The villagers erupted in celebration.
Inside, Obinna was calculating how quickly he could escape back to Lagos.

Unfortunately, his mother had already started enjoying her new status.
"My son is doing very well in Lagos!"
She proudly told anyone willing to listen.

Then Adaeze heard Obinna had returned.
Obinna had admired her before leaving the village, so when they met, he immediately started showing off.
He talked about houses he didn't own, employees who didn't exist and business trips he had never taken.
Adaeze listened quietly.
Then she asked,
"What exactly does your company do?"
Obinna adjusted himself.
"Import and export."
"What do you import?"
He paused.
"Things."
Adaeze stared at him.
"What things?"
Obinna cleared his throat.
"Important things."
Adaeze almost laughed.
From that moment, she knew something wasn't right.

But Obinna wasn't finished.
He promised his mother a new house, his uncle a motorcycle, the village football team sponsorship and the chief solar lights.
Then one morning, his phone rang.
It was his boss.
And he wanted his SUV back.
Immediately.

By sunrise, Obinna discovered the problem with pretending to be rich.

Everybody suddenly needed his help.

His uncle arrived first.

He needed money to repair his roof.

Then his aunt came asking for help with her daughter's school expenses.

Before she left, Obinna's cousin arrived looking for an investor for his poultry business.

Obinna didn't have money for any of them.

But instead of admitting it, he smiled confidently.

"Don't worry. I'll handle it."

Soon, that became his favourite sentence.

Whenever anyone asked when the money was coming, Obinna would tap his phone seriously.

"My accountant is processing it."

Nobody knew his so-called accountant was actually his roommate, Chinedu, whom Obinna kept calling to beg for money.

Then the village chief invited him to an important meeting.

The community hall needed repairs.

After explaining the problem, the chief turned toward Obinna.

"So, Chief Obinna... how much will you contribute?"

Every face turned toward him.

Obinna nearly swallowed his chewing stick.

But pride refused to let him surrender.

He smiled.

And what came out of his mouth next created an even bigger problem.
