According to Benin tradition, The Oba of Benin covers his mouth because we are not supposed to see his teeth when he talks. He is also the supreme authority and whatever he says is final and cannot be opposed. He must not eat in public and no one must see him chewing because he is different from other people, his wives and Iyobas follow suit as a sign of submission, respect and contentment.
