ATTACK ON POLICE OFFICER BY MISCREANTS AT UPPER SAKPONBA IN BENIN-CITY: A CONDEMNABLE ACT....NO LIFE LOST AS INVESTIGATION INTO THE INCIDENT HAS COMMENCED

The Edo State Police Command strongly condemns the recent attack on one of our officers by a group of unruly individuals. Such a senseless act of violence against a law enforcement officer who was carrying out his lawful duty is both unacceptable and criminal.

The Command is committed to maintaining peace, law, and order in our communities, and we will not tolerate any form of assault on our personnel. Attacking a police officer is an attack on the rule of law and the safety of all citizens.

Let it be clearly understood: anyone who takes the law into their own hands by attacking security personnel will face the full force of the law.

No life was lost as mischievously reported on social media as calm has been restored in the area. However, investigations are already underway to unravel the cause of the incident, identify and apprehend those involved in this ugly incident.

The Commissioner of Police CP Monday Agbonika, fdc urges parents, guardians, community leaders, and youth organisations to educate their wards on the importance of respecting law enforcement officials and cooperating with security agencies for the good of society.

The Command remains committed to protecting lives and property, and we will continue to discharge our duties with professionalism and integrity. However, we will not hesitate to take decisive action against anyone who threatens the safety of our officers or undermines the authority of the Police or any law enforcement agency.

“I Left Nollywood Because They Kept Giving Me ármed Róbber Roles I was okay playing the bád boy, hîtman, and th8ef roles at first… until fans started pointing at me off camera and shouting, ‘See that thîef from film’ There are certain roles you play in movies that make people see you like that in real life.

The wórst part? I live a very responsible life. I’m educated. I tried to beg directors to give me different roles — something softer, maybe a lover boy or even a pastor — but no Every script was about g7ns, bl9od, and prîson.

At one point I asked myself, ‘Is this who I really am?’ I knew I could do better, so I walked away.”

Nigerian cook Harrison Odjegba Okene survived 60 hours trapped in an air pocket 100 feet underwater after the tugboat he was in capsized in May 2013. 🌊 ⏱️ 🛟

The Jascon-4 vessel had been pulling an oil tanker off the coast of Nigeria when it suddenly overturned and rapidly sank to the Atlantic Ocean floor.

While 11 of his crew members perished in the disaster, the 29-year-old cook managed to find a small air pocket in the ship's hull.

Wearing only his boxer shorts in the pitch-black compartment, Okene faced hypothermia as cold ocean water continuously seeped into his diminishing air space.

Drinking Coca-Cola to stay hydrated and listening to the sounds of fish eating the bodies of his deceased shipmates, Okene clung to life while reciting a psalm his wife had shared with him.

On the third day underwater, Okene heard knocking sounds. South African divers sent to recover bodies were shocked to discover his hand reaching out from the darkness.

Rescuers fitted Okene with an oxygen mask and carefully decompressed him during the rescue to prevent deadly gas bubbles from forming in his blood.

Okene's unprecedented survival stunned the diving community - most shipwreck victims in similar circumstances die within hours, not days.

After his rescue, Okene suffered from nightmares and survivor's guilt. Though offered work on land by the same company, he vowed never to return to the sea. However, he later returned to the sea and became a diver against his brother's wish, choosing to deal with his fears and trauma.

His remarkable story remains one of the most extraordinary survival tales in maritime history.

Chief Jacob Uwadiae Egharevba: The Man Who Gave Benin Its Written History

Chief Jacob Uwadiae Egharevba stands as one of the most influential figures in preserving the history of the ancient Benin Kingdom. Born in 1893 in Benin City, at a time when oral traditions were the primary means of historical transmission, Egharevba saw the urgent need to document the fading stories of his people in writing. Despite receiving only limited formal education, he mastered several languages, including Edo, English, Yoruba, and Hausa, and used these tools to become a pioneer of indigenous African historiography.

His most famous work, A Short History of Benin, was first written in the Edo language in 1933 and later translated into English in 1934. It became the cornerstone of written knowledge about the Benin Empire, compiling centuries of oral accounts, royal chronicles, and local lore into an accessible form. The book has remained a key reference for historians, scholars, and students of African history to this day.

In 1946, Egharevba was appointed as the first curator of the Benin Museum, a role that positioned him at the heart of efforts to safeguard and interpret the rich cultural heritage of the Edo people. Through this position, he not only curated artifacts but also continued to document customs, laws, and genealogies of the Benin Kingdom, producing over 30 books in his lifetime.

Even after losing his sight in the 1950s, Egharevba did not stop writing. He dictated his works and continued to contribute to the cultural memory of his people. Revered in Benin and beyond, he was honored with the chieftaincy title “Obayangbona of Benin,” meaning “the one who knows the history of the land.”

Chief Jacob Egharevba passed away in 1981, but his legacy endures. Thanks to his tireless efforts, the history of one of Africa’s most sophisticated precolonial empires lives on in print—a gift that continues to educate and inspire generations.
