*_… urges alignment of monetary, fiscal policies_*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has congratulated Prof. Doyin Salami on his appointment as the Chief Economic Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The governor, in a statement, said: “I hope that Prof. Salami will justify the trust and confidence of Mr President and help to align the nation’s monetary and fiscal policies to enable inclusive growth in these very challenging economic times.”

He added: “With this new role, I urge Prof. Salami to provide direction in influencing the fundamentals of the Nigerian economy, which will help to steer the economy back on track.

“Prof. Salami’s credentials will boost investor confidence for many who have sought a more coordinated and predictable economic environment that can spur Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and portfolio investment into the economy.

“As the current chairman of the Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC) and member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria, I expect Prof. Salami to bring his experience to bear in the new assignment and place Nigeria on the path of economic prosperity.”

*Edo explores investment opportunities in LGAs, surveys three councils*

The Edo State Government, as part of efforts to ensure sustainable growth and development and achieve economic prosperity for the state, is exploring investment opportunities across Edo’s18 Local Government Areas (LGAs), so as to attract investments into the councils.

Managing Director, Edo Investment Promotion Office (ESIPO), Mr. Kelvin Uwaibi, disclosed this at the Validation of Areas Potential Survey Report, held in Benin City.

Uwaibi said the pilot survey for the project was conducted in three LGAs, including Etsako West, Esan Central and Oredo, and will be replicated in the entire 18 LGAs across the state.

He noted that the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration is committed to transforming the state economically, in order to create wealth and jobs for the people.

According to him, “the purpose of the survey is to have documented evidence of the investment opportunities in each local government with their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.”

He added that the state government is partnering with a German development agency, GIZ, to improve the business environment through data gathering, which is key to investors.

Uwaibi stated, “We are looking at how to develop the LGAs because when investors come, they are located in these LGAs. But we realized that over the years, the LGAs are neglected whereas they are very critical to the development of a state. Let us not dwell on the challenges because challenges are always there. We should dwell more on the potential. I am quite happy about the three LGAs selected for this pilot survey because in each, there are tertiary institutions, which also brings huge opportunities.

“In developing economies, it starts with research. So, the potentials in these tertiary institutions in the LGAs would be utilized optimally. We need to think about the kind of partnership with the tertiary institutions in terms of research and entrepreneurship.”

“If you look at the Governor’s 2022 budget proposal, you will see that capital infrastructure is very huge, which is because of the government’s zeal to fix our state. It is time to make our LGAs attractive so that even the Diaspora can come and invest at home,” he added.

In her remarks, Edo State Coordinator for GIZ-SEDEN, Blessing Ajimoti, noted, “We want to get data and meet the stakeholders. We want to know what the investment opportunities that exist in the various local governments to positively impact on the state’s economy.”

*Obaseki pledges to strengthen Edo health care system, recommits to Universal Health Coverage*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has said his government is building a strong, equitable and resilient healthcare system to guarantee every Edo resident access to quality and affordable health services.

The governor, in a statement to commemorate this year’s International Universal Health Coverage Day, said his administration will sustain ongoing reforms in the health sector to ensure the attainment of Universal Health Coverage for all residents.

With the theme, “Leave No One’s Health Behind: Invest in Health Systems for All,” Obaseki said his administration has mapped out plans to consolidate on the gains made on strengthening system-wide reforms in the health sector, adding, “this will further bolster our commitment to the provision of quality, accessible and affordable healthcare to all residents of our state, irrespective of financial status, academic qualification or background.”

According to him, “If we are to reach our goal of achieving universal health coverage by 2030, we must sustain investments in the health sector, ensuring that we strengthen our health systems to become stronger and more resilient.

“This is why we have set money aside in 2022 to consolidate on the gains made on strengthening system-wide reforms in the health sector, which includes the purchase of new medical equipment, upgrade of 12 medical facilities, improvement of revenue collection mechanism, expansion of primary healthcare and health insurance scheme to rural and hard-to-reach communities.”

Enumerating some of his government’s achievements in the sector, the governor noted, “We have built a more resilient system involving all relevant stakeholders in the Edo State Healthcare system to respond to challenges faced with the outbreak of the COVID-19 crises.

“With the health insurance scheme now operational, we are building a superstructure to provide a strong capital base for the sustenance of the healthcare system, while providing our people with a more democratised system of accessing quality and affordable healthcare.”

“We have completed construction and have secured the accreditation of the world-class Edo State College of Nursing Sciences, a model tertiary education institution that has been primed to produce top-of-the-range health personnel,” the governor added.
