When I was a child, my friend and I wanted to make brownies from scratch so we went for it. We accidentally added 1/2 cup of salt instead of 1/2 teaspoon. Luckily we realized this before we put the brownies into the oven, but we had to start all over again (we did try to feed the batter to the neighbor's horses, but they wouldn't eat it). It was a sad experience but we wouldn't give up as we wanted to have our brownies good and yummy. So we proceeded to the second batch.

The second batch wasn't great either because we forgot to add the sugar. We noticed this before it went into the oven and added sugar, but the brownies did not come out right - they were very surgary and kind of crunchy. We ate our brownies as we had put in great effort.
We learned that you really do have to add the ingredients in order!

Did you attempt baking or cooking while you were young? If yes, how was it.

MY FIRST CAKE EVER

My first cake ever was my brother's 24th year birthday cake. Prior to that time, someone had promised him a birthday cake. When the time came, it didn't seem like the person was going to come through. The good thing was that as at the time he could sense the the person's inevitable disappointment, he asked if I could help with the cake. Wow! At this time, you could call me a "begining beginner". The only tools I had were pans, a serated knife, a blue food colour, spatula and local oven.

I gladly accepted the job as it was going to be my first independent practical and he was going for a simple vanilla cake. I got the money for the ingredients I needed from him and went shopping. This was a day to his birthday. I went home early after work and got started. I worked on my batter, making sure all measurements were correct. When I was done with the batter, I poured it in my pan which I had cleaned and prepared and put it in my preheated local oven. Left it in the oven and it was ready in due time. At this time, whole was filled with a "noseblinding" aroma (in Joyful Cook's voice)🙂. After which I left it to get cold so I can decorate it.

I started working on the buttercream and this was where I made my first error. Yes, I added to much liquid but this didn't stop me. I worked on rectifying the error till I got it right. Did I mention I had very limited tools? I used a regular kitchen knife instead of a palette knife and a fork instead of a comb. Thank God I God that beginner's pipping set that comes with a pipping bag and some nozzles which I used for the "calligraphic writing" and borders which were screaming "the baker is a beginner"😂😂😂

In summary, my brother was grateful I could help him with the cake. The cake was yummy and the colleagues and pupils at work loved it. I was glad I could help.

Have you ever had a bad cake day?

Well, I have and it really broke my heart.
Let me tell you the story.

Sometime ago, i had an order to attend to. Since I work in the day, I bake mostly at night. On this day, I got home, freshened up and got to work as usual. I got my baking items together, measured correctly and started mixing my batter. The idea was to make a double layer buttercream 8inch round vanilla cake for a client's birthday. As a new baker with limited tools, I had to use my spatula to cream my batter in batches. I finished the first and put it in my local oven (pot and cooker) while I started prepping the other. The cake got ready in due time and I was done with the second batch. The sweet aroma from the kitchen filled the house and I felt so great, only if I knew, the next would be a "burnt offering".
I placed the pan with the second batch in my local oven, cleaned up the bowls, other items used and made sure everywhere was spotless. After this I just thought to lay down briefly, awaiting a very perfect cake. It was just 5 minutes till the time I was to take it off the oven and that was when it happened - I slept. Yes, I SLEPT!🙆🙆🙆.... I should have just sat on the chair, right? I shouldn't have listened to that voice that said, "lie down". I did not just sleep but I SLEEEEEEPT!

Hope you enjoyed this story?

PART TWO

What I mean is that I woke up about 50 minutes later to discover a smokey kitchen. I immediately turned off the cooker, brought down the pot and opened the windows and doors for ventilation. Lo and behold, when I opened my pot, it was indeed a "burnt offering". Left it to cool then brought it out of the pan.
At this point, I didn't know what to do. I just went back to bed, grateful that the delivery day for the cake was the day after (I had baked into the early hours of the morning and the delivery day was the next day).
Woke up, told my mum how I slept, leave the cake to burn. She encouraged me to see if I can salvage some parts of the cake which I did but all efforts were to no avail...the cake was gone. Ah! Otilo! It was dried and was in no way edible. I felt bad because it was a loss and I needed to bake another. Thank God I had some baking items at home which I used in baking a new one which came out great!

Well, in the end, I could meet up with the delivery time and my client and everyone at the event looooved the cake.
