It’s casting time, and today we are making use of both the mobile mixer and the excavator to get the job done faster and easier. The mobile mixer supplies freshly mixed concrete, while the excavator receives the concrete and carefully moves it to the exact area where we are working.

Instead of relying completely on manual labour to transport the concrete, the excavator helps us drop it closer to the workers. This reduces stress, saves time, and keeps the casting process moving smoothly. Once the concrete is dropped, the team spreads, levels, and works on it before it begins to set.

Construction work is all about teamwork, proper planning, and coordination. The mobile mixer, excavator, and workers must all work together at the right time. When everything is properly coordinated, the work becomes faster, more efficient, and less stressful.

Smart equipment use, better coordination, and steady progress, that’s how the work gets done on site. 👷🏗️

Every time heavy rain falls and streets become flooded, many people are quick to blame the government. Yes, the government has a responsibility to build and maintain good drainage systems. But we also need to ask ourselves an honest question: what happens when people turn those drainages into dustbins? Plastic bottles, nylon, food waste and other rubbish are regularly thrown into gutters, blocking the free flow of water.

We cannot continue to demand a cleaner and safer environment while contributing to the problem ourselves. A drainage system cannot work properly when it is filled with rubbish. Individual negligence can turn a small rainfall into a serious flood. The government must do its part, but citizens must also take responsibility. Before blaming the government for every flood, maybe we should first look at what we personally threw into the drainage.

What if I told you that some of Nigeria’s flooding problems are not caused by a lack of drainage, but by the drainage itself?

Nigeria does not always have a drainage problem. Sometimes, we have a drainage design problem. You can build a beautiful and expensive drainage channel, but if the size, slope, depth, catchment area, or discharge point is wrong, flooding can still happen. Water does not care how much money was spent on the project; it will always follow the easiest path. This is why proper investigation, good design, and a clear understanding of where the water is coming from and where it should go are critical before construction begins.

The uncomfortable question is: Are we actually solving the flooding problem, or are we simply constructing what was approved? In some places, we repair the same drainage every year without asking why it keeps failing. The problem may be poor design, inadequate capacity, blocked outlets, poor supervision, or development that has changed the natural flow of water. Until we start treating drainage as an engineering problem rather than just another construction project, we may continue spending money while flooding continues.

The mobile mixer arrived when my team was still not fully ready for the concrete operation. 😂 The mixer was already there, looking like, “Gentlemen, where is the red carpet? I came to work!”

Unfortunately, the available space was too tight for the mixer to position itself properly and discharge the concrete smoothly. So, before we could start mixing and pouring, we had to become construction workers and environmental management officers at the same time. 😅

We started clearing the area, removing anything that could block the mixer and creating enough space for it to maneuver and discharge without causing another problem.

This is one thing people watching construction from the roadside may never understand. Sometimes, the actual work is not just mixing concrete, carrying materials or operating equipment. You also have to prepare the site properly so the equipment can do its job safely and efficiently.

In construction, timing matters. Equipment can arrive early, late, or exactly when you are not ready. 😂 But when the mixer is already waiting, you don't have time for excuses. You clear the way and get to work!

Two drainage construction engineers are working at a construction site when one quietly tells the other, “Reduce the cement a little. Nobody is watching us.”

But here is the lesson: someone may not be watching you, but the consequences are. That drainage you are making weak today may collapse tomorrow, damage someone's property, flood a road, or even cost a life. Engineering is not about doing the right thing only when the supervisor is around. It is about doing the right thing because people will depend on what you build.

Nobody may be watching the construction site, but the community will live with your work. Build as if your own family will be the first to use it.

Why do we construct drainage without first knowing where the water will eventually go? Sometimes, we build a beautiful drainage system, connect everything perfectly, and then forget to ask the most important question: “Oga, where is this water going?” 😂 It is like building a road and forgetting to ask where the road ends. The rain will simply enter the drainage, look around, and say, “So this is the end of my journey?”

A good drainage system is not just about digging channels and pouring concrete. Before construction begins, we need to understand the natural flow of water, the slope of the area, the receiving channel, and where the water can safely discharge. Otherwise, we may spend millions building a drainage system that successfully carries water from one flooding point to another flooding point. In the end, we have not solved the problem, we have only relocated the flood. 😂

Nigeria doesn’t have a drainage problem; we have a planning and accountability problem. Every year, the rain comes, the drains overflow, roads disappear under dirty water, houses are flooded, and we act surprised, as if rain suddenly became an enémy of Nigeria. In some places, drains are constructed without properly studying where the water is coming from, how much water the area receives, or where the water will eventually discharge. Sometimes, we build roads first and remember drainage later. That is like building a roof and remembering afterwards that the house needs walls.

The painful part is that flooding is not always caused by heavy rainfall. Poor design, blocked channels, illegal structures, inadequate maintenance, waste disposal and weak enforcement can turn ordinary rainfall into a disaster. Until drainage projects are properly planned, professionally executed, independently supervised and maintained, we will continue spending public money to fight the same flooding every year. Nigeria doesn't need another drainage project just for the cameras; we need drainage systems that actually work when the rain comes. Because when the flood enters people's homes, nobody asks who commissioned the project, they only see the damage.
