FROM RESIGNATION TO IMPEACHMENT....... (Majority Leader of the house explanation and stakeholders voew)
Following the decision to reject the resignation of its former speaker, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku and formally impeached him from office, The Voices reached out to the Majority Leader and also asked some stakeholders their views on the issue
The decision was taken during the plenary on Monday, August 24, 2026, following a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Hon. Ojezele Osezua Sunday, seeking to replace the earlier record of Agbebaku’s resignation with a formal impeachment.
Agbebaku had resigned as Speaker on August 17 amid mounting pressure from lawmakers and moved to remove him from office. At the time, he said his decision was taken for personal reasons and in the interest of peace, the Edo State House of Assembly, and his constituency.
His resignation, however, did not end the controversy surrounding his leadership. The Assembly subsequently commenced moves to investigate allegations concerning his tenure, including claims of corruption and financial impropriety.
The leadership of the House had already changed, with Hon. Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, emerging as the new Speaker following Agbebaku’s exit. Idiaye later said the lawmakers’ decision was influenced by concerns over leadership and alleged misconduct under his predecessor.
With Monday’s resolution, the Edo Assembly has now formally rejected the resignation route and recorded Agbebaku’s removal as an impeachment, marking a fresh chapter in the political and legislative developments surrounding the 8th Edo State House of Assembly.
The development is expected to further fuel discussions about the circumstances surrounding Agbebaku’s removal and the direction of the Edo legislature under the new leadership.
