Day 3: The Discipline of Fasting: Purifying Your Heart and Mind
Spiritual Theme: The Power of Spiritual Discipline: Overcoming Life's Challenges with Faith and Focus
In a world filled with distractions, temptations, and instant gratification, fasting is a powerful spiritual discipline that helps us focus on God and purge the distractions that often draw us away from Him. Fasting is not simply about abstaining from food (and even from sleep, s*x etc); it is about intentionally setting aside time and space to pursue spiritual clarity, deepened intimacy with God, and renewed dependence on Him.
Fasting helps purify our hearts and minds, allowing us to redirect our focus away from the temporary pleasures of this world toward the eternal purposes of God. It is an opportunity to humble ourselves before God, seek His will, and experience His power in a new dimension in our lives.
Fasting is a tool, a spiritual strategy that we use to sharpen our dull swords in the secret place and thereby igniting the raw fire of God afresh upon our prayer altar. We catch fire and generate so much power when we fast and pray. Adding fasting to our regular prayers, allows us to become focused, spending quality time with God in the secret place, where He breaks, moulds and shape us into that which He has ordained and called us to be.
Of course, for the natural man, fasting is neither fun nor attractive. So, he will do everything to neglect and avoid it at all cost, because fasting is one of the height of spiritual discipline. The essence of fasting is to put the flesh under, so that the spirit man can ascend and attain its rightful place.
You can’t live a spiritual life if you don’t fast or if you neglect it. Similarly, you won’t be able to stand, walk, nor run the race set before you if you neglect fasting. Study the lives of the early Christians and see how they lived their lives, which enable them to make so much impact. If it is results, speed, power, impart, spiritual consistency, fervency and focus that you are looking for, then you must fast and pray regularly as a lifestyle.
Fasting helps us to crucify the flesh and put our body and earthly desires under subjection, so that our spirit man can become attuned and submit to the leading of the Spirit. So, when we fast, we must discipline ourselves in the area of food, sleep, and abstain from s*x (if married), fun, entertainment (including social media, movies, TV etc.), and seeking of pleasures (see Isaiah 58: 3 -8).
In the midst of modern life, where distractions are everywhere, fasting helps us break free from the hold of worldly desires and focus on God’s kingdom purposes and interests. As we fast, we are reminded of our dependence on God and the importance of His presence in our lives.

Scripture Focus:
“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting... but when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” – Matthew 6:16-18 (NIV).
Jesus teaches us that fasting is not for public recognition or self-glorification but a personal discipline meant to humble our hearts before God. Our fasting should be done in secret, seeking God’s presence without seeking the approval of others.
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke?” – Isaiah 58:6 (NIV).
Fasting, as God intends, goes beyond mere abstinence; it’s about purifying our hearts to reflect God’s will. True fasting leads to freedom, not just in our physical bodies but also in our spirit, enabling us to live out God’s purposes, including justice, mercy, and righteousness. Fasting empowers the believer to cultivate more of Christian virtues and enlarges our capacity to relate, receive, and fellowship with God.

Call to Action:
1. Set Aside Time to Fast with Purpose:
• Action Point: This week/month, choose a day or a period to fast, whether it's from food, media, s*x, sleep, and or something else that distracts you. Use this time to focus entirely on God, seeking His guidance, wisdom, and presence.
• Reflection: How can fasting help you remove distractions and deepen your relationship with God? Ask yourself: What is one area of your life that could benefit from being “purified” through fasting?
2. Fasting for a Specific Purpose:
• Action Point: If you’re fasting, pair it with a specific prayer focus. Whether you’re seeking clarity, spiritual growth, or freedom from temptation, dedicate your fast to seeking God’s will and aligning your heart with His.
• Reflection: What areas of your life do you need to surrender to God in prayer and fasting? Is there something you’ve been struggling with that God wants to release you from?

Sober Reflections:
Fasting is not just a physical act; it’s a spiritual reset that helps us refocus on God. In a world that constantly demands our attention, fasting allows us to draw near to God and intentionally seek His presence. It is through fasting that we are cleansed and made more sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading. It will be more difficult to walk in discernment and divine direction if you don’t fast regularly.
The reason why most believers of these days don’t seem to see, hear, nor perceive anything in the spirit is simply because of distractions, the spirit of heaviness and worldliness. Fasting will empower you to break free from such evil yokes, bo***ges, satanic influences and interferences.
As we fast, we are invited to experience God's strength in our weakness and to be reminded that our true satisfaction and strength come from Him alone. Fasting humbles us, purges distractions, sins, pollutions and defilement from the world, and thereby makes us more open to God’s transformation in our lives.

Prayer:
Father in the name of Jesus Christ, I thank You for the powerful discipline of fasting, which helps us draw closer to You and purify our hearts. I ask that You give me the strength to fast with purpose and the right heart. Help me to remove the distractions and temptations that pull me away from Your presence.
Lord, as I fast, may it be a time of deep reflection and renewal. I surrender every area of my life to You, asking for Your guidance, wisdom, and freedom from anything that hinders my walk with You.
I pray that through this time of fasting, I will grow in dependence on You, draw nearer to Your will, and experience Your peace and clarity in new ways, and in very area of my life, family and relationships. May my fast not be for show, but for Your glory and the deepening of our relationship.
In Jesus' name, I pray,
Amen.
Shalom!
