Edo Civil Servants Laud Gov. Okpebholo Over Payment of 13th-Month Salary

Civil servants in Edo State have expressed appreciation to Governor Monday Okpebholo following the payment of the 13th-month salary, describing the gesture as timely and morale-boosting.

Journalists who visited the Edo State Secretariat and several ministries including the Ministry of Information and Strategy; Ministry of Lands and Housing; Ministry of Environment and Sustainability; and the Ministry of Education, Iyaro, gathered reactions from workers who confirmed receipt of the payment and commended the state government.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information and Strategy, Mrs. Rose Imonikhe, Director of Orientation, said the alert came as a pleasant surprise.

She said, "I woke up this morning, it was the alert that woke me up, the 13th-month salary. I’m grateful to the governor for what he has done. You can see me smiling, and that is how other officers in the Edo State civil service are smiling,”

Mrs. Imonikhe noted that the payment would ease financial pressure on workers during the festive season and beyond.

“This Christmas period, most people must have spent their December salaries. So this will help them enter the new year with something in their pockets. Those with children’s school fees to pay can do so without stress, and others who are renewing rents will also benefit. This 13th-month salary will go very far,”

She said, “The governor has played his part; it is left for civil servants to do theirs by being more committed. He is in a haste to deliver the dividends of democracy, and the civil service is the channel through which this can be achieved,”

Similar sentiments were expressed by other civil servants at the Ministry of Lands and Housing, including Beatrice Ihulde, Precious Abu, Bridget Igbinovia and Onyinyechi Florence, who described the payment as a clear demonstration of concern for workers’ welfare.

At the Ministry of Environment and Sustainability, the Director of Administration, Mrs. Egbe Jocy, also commended the government, saying the initiative would strengthen morale and productivity across the service.

Many civil servants agree that the gesture has brought relief and renewed confidence in the government’s people-centred approach to governance.

It would be recalled that Governor Okpebholo shortly after he assumed office in November 2024, implemented the 13th month salaries payment for civil service in the state.

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has paid glowing tribute to Nigeria’s fallen heroes, acknowledging their supreme sacrifice as the foundation upon which the nation’s unity, peace and stability rest.

The Governor made this declaration at the official launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem Appeal Fund, held at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City.

Speaking through the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, Governor Okpebholo expressed deep sympathy with the families of fallen service personnel, describing their loss as a collective national sacrifice that must never be forgotten. He noted that the freedom enjoyed by Edo people and Nigerians at large was secured at great cost by men and women who laid down their lives in defence of the nation.

The Governor underscored the enduring significance of Armed Forces Remembrance Day, stressing that it serves as both a solemn moment of reflection and a reaffirmation of national gratitude.

He announced the launch of the 2026 Emblem Appeal Fund with a personal donation of ₦10 million, signaling his administration’s firm commitment to the welfare of veterans and the families of the fallen.

“The peace and unity we enjoy today, as a state and as a nation, came at a great price,” the Governor said. “Our fallen heroes gave their lives so that Nigeria may endure. Earlier, the Edo State Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Mr. Sunny Egbogie, who led widows of fallen heroes and retired veterans to the event, commended Governor Okpebholo for his consistent support and empathy toward the Legion. He described the Governor’s gesture as a powerful morale booster for ex-servicemen and families still bearing the scars of loss.

Mr. Egbogie appealed for the integration of trained veterans into the state’s security architecture, noting that their experience and discipline would significantly strengthen Edo State’s security framework. He also requested logistical support, including operational vehicles and motorcycles, a review of the Legion’s overhead subvention, and special consideration for widows and veterans during the Yuletide season.

The ceremony attracted top government functionaries and security chiefs, including heads of security agencies, commissioners, permanent secretaries, directors of ministries and parastatals, alongside widows of fallen heroes.

Okpebholo vows to tackle insecurity head on in Edo State

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed his administration’s strong commitment to securing the lives and property of citizens.

He made this known in Benin City while receiving the new Commander of the 4 Brigade, Nigerian Army, General Ahmed Olatunboju Balogun, on a courtesy visit to the Government House.

Governor Okpebholo assured the Nigerian Army of the state government’s full cooperation and continuous support in the fight against insecurity and other crimes.

The Governor said, "Let me welcome you to Edo. In truth, we had a very good relationship with the outgoing commander, and I believe we will continue from where he stopped. The security and protection of the people and properties of Edo State are very important to us. I want you to know that we are going to work with you wholeheartedly to ensure Edo remains secure.”

The governor also encouraged the new commander to communicate any operational challenges requiring the state’s intervention.

He said, "You talked about school, hospital, and road. These are areas we are already working on. In the next few days, you will see improvements around the office. At the Ekenwa Barracks, we are taking the road project to Gele-Gele, spanning about 36km. In that vicinity, you can see the good work already ongoing,”

Governor Okpebholo further said,

“In the area of drones, we are procuring multifunctional ones with good capabilities. Very soon, we will deliver on that. I want you to help us secure a new Edo, free from insecurity,” he added.

In his remarks, Brigadier General Balogun said he considered it necessary to visit the governor shortly after assuming command.

He said, “I took over 4 Brigade barely a week ago, and I deemed it fit to pay this courtesy visit to inform His Excellency of the change in command,”

“Permit me to sincerely appreciate you for the work you have been doing for the brigade. I see the passion and drive His Excellency has for security, it is top-notch, and I must commend you.”

He pledged to consolidate the existing cooperation between the military and the state government.

“My predecessor spoke highly of the support received from the Edo State Government, which has greatly aided our professional duty. I will build on this cooperation and take it to the next level. My passion is to work towards making Edo State safer, ensuring citizens sleep with both eyes closed and go about their businesses without fear,” he said.

The commander also highlighted areas needing prompt attention, including the completion of the Ekenwa Barracks road, the stalled renovation of the brigade school, and the need for drones to enhance technological-driven operations.

Present at the meeting were the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilo Esq.; Chief of Staff, Mallam Gani Audu; Permanent Secretary, Government House and Protocol, Mrs. Edith Sede; and other senior government officials.

Edo State Govt Partners Stakeholders on Launching Measles-Rubella Vaccine Sensitization

‎The Edo State Government through its Office of the First Lady has partnered stakeholders including the Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency, the World Health Organization, amongst others, to organize a sensitization programme aimed at raising awareness about the upcoming measles-rubella vaccine rollout in January, 2026, as part of a broader national effort to drive widespread sensitization and encourage vaccine uptake in the State.

‎At the sensitization programme, which held at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy in Benin City, the Coordinator, Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, emphasized the importance of educating the public about the measles-rubella vaccine. She highlighted the need to address concerns, misconceptions and promote community engagement to ensure a successful vaccine rollout in January, 2026.

‎According to Mrs. Anani, "I have seen the pain of preventable diseases. Sometimes when I see children, I feel sad because it's actually preventable. And I've also seen the transformative power of immunization. That is why I stand here today not just as a Public Servant, but as a mother with passion and an advocate for every child in our State, to make sure that no child is left behind.

‎"Let us remember that the measles-rubella vaccine is safe, effective, and free. It is a simple act that can save lives and prevent lifelong complications. We must work together to ensure that no child is left behind. Let us debunk the myths surrounding this vaccine. It is important that we have a society where our children are healthy because they are the future."

‎Mrs. Anani appreciated the place of community leaders, the press, and all relevant stakeholders, acknowledged their crucial role in amplifying the message of the measles-rubella vaccine, and said, "Our community leaders and influencers, your voices, they carry weight. Use them to dispel myths and encourage participation. And to every parent and child caregiver, you are a child's future. Let us leave this meeting not only informed, but inspired. Let us go back to our communities with renewed energy and a clear message, Edo State is united in the fight against measles-rubella. Together, you and I, we will make a difference and build the new Edo of our dreams in line with His Excellency Distinguished Sen. Monday Okpebholo's SHINE Agenda with health as a core mandate."

‎She expressed gratitude to partners including healthcare workers for their dedication and resilience and acknowledged their crucial role in the measles-rubella vaccine campaign. She stressed the collective commitment of protecting children's health and eliminating measles and rubella, which are preventable diseases that pose risks to vulnerable communities.

‎The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomole, expressed gratitude to the Edo State Governor, Sen. Okpebholo, for his investments in the Health Sector, highlighting the transformation of Primary Health centres through the SHINE Agenda of making vaccines accessible and free. He emphasized the adverse impact of measles-rubella, advising that vaccination is key to prevention.

‎The State Coordinator of the World Health Organization, Dr. Nora Eyo, appreciated the Governor for prioritizing children's health. He submitted that measles-rubella is highly contagious, with serious consequences. She stressed the place of sensitization as key to public health success, building trust and ensuring community participation.

‎According to Dr. Eyo, "Sensitization remains one of the most critical components of any public health intervention, because it determines community trust, participation, and ultimately, the success of the campaign. We sincerely appreciate His Excellency, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, Governor of Edo State for his commitment to strengthening the primary health care system, improving disease prevention efforts, and ensuring that the health of children remains a priority across all the local government areas.

‎"Measles-rubella remains highly contagious diseases, particularly affecting those not vaccinated. The complications of rubella could have serious consequences. If a pregnant woman gets infected, it can result in birth defects in the baby. Prevention through vaccination is the most effective strategy. This sensitization event is therefore essential to ensure that caregivers and indeed everyone, wherever they are, understand the importance of bringing children aged 9 months to 15 years to receive the measles rubella vaccine."

‎The Executive Secretary of the Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Coulson Osoikhia expressed gratitude to Mrs. Anani for her commitment to women, children, and families, highlighting the importance of her presence at the sensitization programme in fostering trust among the people.

‎Dr. Coulson emphasized that measles-rubella continues to threaten unvaccinated children, with outbreaks occurring due to incomplete vaccination coverage. He added that the sensitization mission is to educate parents, caregivers, and healthcare workers on the vaccine's importance and encourage participation in the campaign. According to him, measles can cause severe health issues, rubella is dangerous for pregnant women, and vaccination is the safest and most effective prevention method, with free and safe vaccines available at designated health facilities.

‎The programme featured a keynote lecture delivered by Prof. Ayebo Sadoh on measles-rubella awareness, covering symptoms, transmission, and prevention. She maintained that measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause serious complications, emphasizing the importance of vaccination, stating that the measles-rubella vaccine is safe, effective, and free.

Edo Carnival to Showcase State’s Rich Cultural Heritage — Eromosele

The Special Adviser to Governor Monday Okpebholo on Protocol, Daniel Eromosele, has said the maiden edition of the Edo Carnival is set to shine a global spotlight on the state’s vibrant cultural heritage.

Eromosele, who is also the carnival’s convener, explained that the weeklong festival will run from December 21 to 27, 2025. The event will feature cultural parades, food festivals, seminars, pageantry, and a variety of activities celebrating the creativity and diversity of the Edo people.

Preparations for the carnival kicked off with a sensitization roadshow across key areas of Benin City. A dry-run event at the Sir Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub on Airport Road gave residents a sneak peek of what to expect during the main festival later this month.

Speaking at the roadshow, Eromosele, popularly known as Pikolo, said the first Edo Carnival will open the state to fresh opportunities in tourism, commerce, and other sectors of economic growth.

He said, “Edo is very rich in culture, and this carnival is our way of showcasing that heritage to the world. Today’s dry run gives people a glimpse of what to expect when the carnival officially opens on December 21. We will present cultural parades, food festivals, seminars, pageantry, and much more. This is also an opportunity to discover new talent in music, dance, comedy, and cultural displays. One of our goals is to provide a platform for emerging talents to shine.”

Eromosele urged residents and visitors to prepare for the full festival, adding that the carnival goes beyond entertainment, positioning Edo State as a top destination for tourism and investment.

He added, “Beyond the carnival, Edo will be more open to economic opportunities. People will realize that Edo is business-friendly and a place worth visiting. Investors need to key into what we are building.”

Similarly, carnival coordinator Sohpy Udor emphasized that the event aims to highlight the Edo people’s cultural richness. She said, “I am excited to be part of this event. We are expecting many new talents and performances. About six bands, each in different colours, will entertain the public throughout the festival.”

The roadshow featured performances by riders, cultural troupes, students, entertainment enthusiasts, NYSC members, and other groups as the Edo Cultural Carnival 2025 officially kicked off from the Sir Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub. The procession moved through Airport Road to the Edo State House of Assembly and concluded at Oba Ovonramwen Square.

Modelled after the internationally acclaimed Calabar Carnival, the maiden Edo Carnival aligns with Governor Okpebholo’s vision of attracting investment by leveraging tourism, arts, and culture as key drivers to showcase the state’s rich heritage.

Gov. Okpebholo Pledges Continued Implementation of Disability Laws

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the full implemention of the disability laws in a bid to ensuring that persons living with disabilities receive the necessary support and protection from the government.

The governor, who reiterated the commitment pledge at an event held in Benin City, the state capital, to mark the International Day for Persons with Disabilities (IDPD 2025), emphasised the importance of promoting inclusion across all sectors of the economy.

In demonstration of the administration’s dedication to improving the welfare of persons with disabilities, Governor Okpebholo had earlier inaugurated the Edo State Commission for Persons with Disabilities (EDSCPD) on March 26, 2025, a proactive step to strengthen advocacy and address the needs of vulnerable groups in the state.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Barr. Musa Ikilor, the governor assured that the Commission would be empowered to effectively drive inclusion in government programmes and policies.

The governor, who alluded moral teachings from the Holy Bible and the Quran, stressed that discrimination against persons with disabilities is condemned by both religious doctrines.

He urged citizens to imbibe positive values and ensure that the disability laws are respected and implemented in everyday life.

“Beyond laws, people need to connect and understand that persons living with disabilities have to be respected. As a people and as a society, we need to care for persons with disabilities in our midst, and ensure they are considered in what we do and do our best to support their wellbeing,” he said.

Governor Okpebholo also appealed to citizens to build strong support systems that ensure persons with disabilities have access to public buildings, employment opportunities, and a society that truly cares for the vulnerable.

“I want to assure the commission that the Edo State Government will continue to support all persons with disabilities and tackle the challenges they face,” he added.

The Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) in Edo State, Ann Ojugo, called for practical inclusion in key sectors such as healthcare and education.

She commended the government for empowering over 200 PWDs with N200,000 each to start small businesses.

“We want inclusion in our homes, schools, health sector, and the entire economy. Inclusion should be practical, not just on paper,” she said.

The Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Edesiri Anani Okpebholo, who was represented by the Special Adviser on Health, Dr. Andrew Iyamu, stated that the Okpebholo-led administration believed firmly that disability is not inability and that every citizen deserved a seat at the governance table.

She noted that the creation of the disability commission remained a landmark accomplishment reflecting the government's commitment to leaving no one behind.

This was just as she assured that the Office of the First Lady would continue to champion initiatives that promote education, healthcare, and economic empowerment for persons with disabilities.

The first lady urged stakeholders to partner with the government to build a proud and inclusive Edo State, where inclusion moves beyond rhetoric and becomes a practical reality.

The highpoint of the event was the presentation of awards to Governor Okpebholo, the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady and the SSG in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the welfare of vulnerable citizens in the state.
