The Olorunda Local Council Development Area has launched a sweeping reform aimed at restoring order across its motor parks, with plans to rebuild key facilities and reclaim trading spaces allegedly allocated illegally in communities such as Mowo, Aradagun and Morogbo.

The move, which forms part of a broader strategy to improve sanitation, strengthen regulation and boost internally generated revenue, was unveiled during a stakeholdersโ€™ meeting held with traders and motor park union leaders at the Mowo Ado-Ado Motor Park, inside the council secretariat in Iworo.

The meeting drew a wide range of participants including traders, drivers, union executives and senior council officials, all of whom engaged in discussions on long-standing operational challenges within the parks.

Speaking at the session, the Executive Chairman of Olorunda LCDA, Hon. Ajose Peter Kumayon, said the council is determined to reposition motor park operations through far-reaching structural reforms. He explained that the planned remodeling and reconstruction would not only improve the physical outlook of the parks but also create a more organised and business-friendly environment.

Ajose raised concerns over poor sanitation and widespread non-compliance with revenue payments among traders, warning that the era of lax enforcement was over. He also condemned the actions of some union leaders accused of illegally allocating trading spaces, stressing that such practices undermine the authority of the council and would no longer be tolerated.

Backing the chairmanโ€™s stance, the Supervisor for Transportation and Parks, Hon. Fagbamila Oluwadamilare Adewale, alongside the Council Manager, Alhaji Moruf Adesanya, made it clear that only the council has the legal authority to allocate spaces within motor parks. They cautioned individuals and groups to desist from unauthorised activities or face sanctions.

On revenue compliance, the Council Treasurer, Mrs. Awusinu, urged traders to adhere strictly to the payment of levies and permits. She noted that consistent revenue inflow is critical to funding infrastructure upgrades and delivering essential services, lamenting that irregular payments have slowed development efforts in the area.

Ajose further hinted that the redevelopment process may involve adjustments affecting some occupants, but emphasised that cooperation from all stakeholders would be key to achieving lasting results. He added that safety issues, particularly activities around high-tension power lines within the parks, would also be addressed as part of the reform.

In his response, the Zonal Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria in Mowo, Mr. Taofiq Yekeen, welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that would bring order, growth and better coordination to motor park operations across Olorunda LCDA.

A political youth group in Badagry West has thrown its weight behind President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Ahmed Tinubu and Hon. Solomon Saanu Bonu ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing confidence in their leadership and commitment to development.

In a formal endorsement statement released after what it described as wide consultations and careful observation of public sentiment, the Progressives Badagry West Youth announced its support for Tinubuโ€™s re-election as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The group also endorsed Hon. Solomon Saanu Bonu for a seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Badagry Constituency I.

According to the statement, the decision was reached collectively, driven by what the group called the need for continuity in governance and effective representation across all levels.

โ€œThis endorsement is anchored on confidence in proven leadership, institutional stability and sustained development,โ€ the statement noted.

The endorsement event is scheduled to hold on April 23, 2026, at Gbaji in Badagry West, where members of the group are expected to publicly affirm their position.

The group maintained that its decision reflects the growing support for leaders it believes have demonstrated capacity to deliver democratic dividends, while urging residents to rally behind candidates committed to progress and stability.

A public affairs commentary has commended the Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, for what it described as proactive leadership and sustained grassroots impact through the ongoing Renewed Hope โ‚ฆ100,000 Cash Empowerment Programme.

In the opinion piece marking the fifth edition of the initiative, the writer, Evang. Reuben Omotayo Hopo, praised Hunpe as a โ€œworthy executive chairman who has not gone to bed to sleep,โ€ noting that his administration has remained responsive to the needs of residents amid prevailing economic challenges.

The article situates the programme within the broader economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubuโ€™s Renewed Hope agenda, acknowledging that while current policies may pose short-term difficulties, they are aimed at laying a solid foundation for long-term national prosperity. It added that governments at all levels must align with federal efforts by delivering tangible relief to citizens.

Highlighting Badagry as a case study, the writer pointed to the monthly cash empowerment scheme initiated by Hunpe in November 2025, which provides โ‚ฆ100,000 to 200 beneficiaries across the councilโ€™s ten wards. The programme is designed to run for 20 months, targeting 4,000 residents, particularly small business owners and vulnerable groups.

According to the commentary, the initiative is intended to support household businesses, stimulate the informal sector and strengthen the local economy. It stressed that the grants are not meant for short-term consumption but as a means to build sustainable livelihoods and expand economic opportunities within the community.

With the fifth phase completed, the programme has so far reached 1,000 beneficiaries within its first five months, a milestone the writer described as evidence of consistency and commitment by the council leadership.

Beyond the cash support scheme, the article also highlighted other achievements of the Hunpe administration, including improved environmental sanitation, enhanced healthcare delivery, strengthened community policing, food support initiatives, workforce reforms and increased attention to vulnerable groups such as the elderly and persons with disabilities. Ongoing efforts in road expansion and education infrastructure were also cited.

As the administration approaches its first anniversary, the writer concluded that Hunpeโ€™s leadership reflects alignment with both federal and state development agendas, urging residents to make productive use of government interventions and contribute to the overall growth of the local government area.

The Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, on Wednesday disbursed โ‚ฆ100,000 each to 200 beneficiaries under the Renewed Hope Asiwaju Cash Support Programme, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 1,000.

Speaking at the event, Hunpe described the initiative as a grassroots reflection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubuโ€™s Renewed Hope agenda, noting that increased federal allocations to local governments must translate into visible relief for the people. He said responsive governance requires timely interventions to support households and boost small-scale businesses in the face of economic challenges.

According to the chairman, the programme, launched within his first 100 days in office, is a monthly intervention designed to cushion economic hardship and strengthen grassroots economic activities. He explained that the initiative is expected to run for about 20 months, targeting 4,000 residents across Badagry Local Government.

He noted that beneficiaries include widows, widowers, petty traders, artisans, the elderly and other vulnerable groups, stressing that the selection process remains inclusive and non-partisan.

Hunpe also revealed that the council would carry out periodic appraisals of the programme through unscheduled visits and monitoring mechanisms to ensure proper use of the funds and to guide future expansion.

While acknowledging differing views on empowerment programmes, he maintained that cash support provides immediate relief, adding that such interventions complement ongoing infrastructure development. He urged beneficiaries to invest the funds wisely in their businesses to ensure sustainability, assuring that accountability measures have been put in place.

Earlier, the Council Treasurer, Mr. Olugbenga Hunponu, commended the consistency of the initiative and its positive impact on the local economy, urging beneficiaries to make prudent use of the support.

Other dignitaries present at the event included the Vice Chairman, Hon. Akeem Adeyemi; councillors led by the Leader of the House, Hon. Bankole Mautin Asokere; members of the Executive Cabinet led by the Secretary to the Local Government, Mr. Adagba Benjamin; as well as heads of departments and units of the council.

The recent narrative being pushed by Mark Akande against Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan is nothing short of political mischief dressed up as public commentary. It is disappointing, but not surprising, that in the face of clear performance and growing grassroots support, some opponents have resorted to playing the ethnic card as a tool of distraction.

Let it be stated plainly: the claim that Hon. Sesi Whingan has marginalised Awori communities in Badagry Federal Constituency is false, misleading, and does not reflect the reality on the ground.

For anyone who truly understands Badagry, this is a constituency built on coexistence among Awori, Ogu (Egun), Ayonu, and other groups. Attempts to introduce division along ethnic lines are not only dangerous but also a direct insult to the intelligence of the people.

Mark Akandeโ€™s write-up tries to create doubt around Whinganโ€™s leadership by suggesting exclusion and imbalance. But the facts tell a completely different story.

In Awori communities, particularly within Olorunda LCDA, which has been falsely portrayed as marginalised, several of Whinganโ€™s most impactful projects are located within Awori-speaking areas. In Mowo, a mixed community, a block of classrooms was facilitated at Mowo Community Secondary School. In Igbanko, a predominantly Awori community, another school project stands as clear evidence of his intervention. In Ibereko, a free National Identification Number registration centre established by him has already served over 50,000 residents, largely from Awori communities.

Beyond infrastructure, his Free School Ride initiative continues to support students across Morogbo, Oko Afo, Mowo, and Ibereko, easing daily transportation challenges for families in these areas. These are not symbolic gestures; they are real interventions affecting real people.

It is also on record that many beneficiaries of his scholarships, employment facilitation, and empowerment programmes cut across all ethnic groups, with a significant number from Awori communities. So the question remains: where exactly is this so-called marginalisation?

Even politically, the narrative does not hold water. During recent engagements with APC leaders in Olorunda LCDA, Hon. Whingan was received with open support and commendation for his work in their communities. There was no sign of the discontent being peddled in Akandeโ€™s article.

What is evident is a coordinated attempt to rewrite reality in order to score cheap political points. It is unfortunate that Mark Akande, who once positioned himself as a voice for youth inclusion, now appears willing to trade credibility for relevance.

More telling is the irony in all of this. If there were ever an opportunity to exploit ethnic sentiment, it would have been for Whingan himselfโ€”as a prominent voice of the Ogu people, a minority group with limited representation at the National Assembly. Yet, he has consistently refused to campaign on ethnic lines, choosing instead to focus on performance, development, and unity.

That decision is what sets him apart.

Badagry people are not strangers to political propaganda. They can see the difference between facts and fiction, between performance and noise. Resorting to ethnic narratives in a constituency known for its diversity is not just lowโ€”it is a sign of political desperation.

Mark Akande and those behind this misinformation should understand that Badagry is bigger than narrow interests. The people deserve honest engagement, not manufactured division.

In the end, no amount of falsehood can erase visible results. And in Badagry today, the evidence of inclusive representation under Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan is there for all to see.
