Sanwo-Olu Flags Off Monthly Sanitation Drive, Urges Lagos Residents to Take Ownership of Environment

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially launched the revamped monthly environmental sanitation exercise, urging residents to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean. The exercise, which had been abandoned for years, will now hold on the last Saturday of every month from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. without any restriction on movement.

Speaking at the flag-off event at the Mushin–Agege Motor Road corridor, Sanwo-Olu lamented the level of dirt across several parts of the state and emphasized the need for collective action to restore environmental cleanliness. He stressed that maintaining a clean environment is a civic duty, not just a government obligation.

The governor explained that the exercise would be voluntary, complying with a court judgement that nullified compulsory stay-at-home sanitation in the state. Residents are expected to clean their homes, surroundings, and drainage channels, while officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) will evacuate properly bagged waste.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, described the reintroduction of the sanitation exercise as a major step toward improving public health and environmental sustainability in the state. He warned residents against environmental offences, stressing that the Lagos Environmental Law remains in force.

The monthly sanitation exercise was suspended in 2016 following a court ruling that restricted movement during sanitation hours. The new approach focuses on voluntary compliance, community participation, and enforcement of environmental laws without infringing on citizens' rights.

SMA Movement Sets Lagos Ablaze with Mega Rally for Tinubu

A massive show of support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is coming to Lagos on March 11th, as the SMA Movement, led by Lagos governorship hopeful Samuel Mawuyon Ajose (SMA GOLD), hosts a grassroots rally to back the Renewed Hope agenda.

The event, themed “Renewed Hope Consolidation: SMA Grassroots Mobilisation for Tinubu 2027,” will hold on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos, bringing together youth groups, artisans, market associations, labour unions and party loyalists from across the state.

Speaking on the significance of the event, Samuel Mawuyon Ajose noted that the mobilisation represents the collective commitment of citizens and grassroots stakeholders to sustain the progress being recorded under President Tinubu’s leadership while fostering unity among diverse social groups.

Ajose expressed that the rally is designed to deepen public engagement with the policies and reforms of the Tinubu administration while strengthening grassroots awareness about the direction of the government ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Dr. Babatunde Mesewaku, Chairman SMA Movement, said the mobilisation also seeks to highlight key reforms and infrastructure development currently underway across the country, including the landmark Badagry–Sokoto Highway project expected to enhance trade, connectivity and economic growth across several regions.

The rally is expected to serve as a strong show of solidarity for the Renewed Hope agenda as supporters converge in Lagos with a shared resolve to move Nigeria forward together.
