CELEBRATING A GOLDEN FISH: DR. MIDE PHILEMON, PhD.

I know you may not like this, but they say, “A golden fish has no hiding place.” Today, I choose to celebrate you, Dr. Mide Philemon, PhD.

We often wait for birthdays or until a person is no more before we celebrate them and acknowledge their contributions. But I choose to celebrate you today, while you are strong, healthy, and hearty, so that you can hear these words and know how much you are appreciated.

You are not the kind of person who seeks the limelight or tries to be everywhere. Many people have heard your name more times than they have seen you. Yet, whenever you are needed, you are always present. You may not be a very public person, but your impact speaks loudly.

You are a wonderful colleague, a true friend, and a remarkable philanthropist. You are exceptionally intelligent, yet you relate freely and warmly with everyone. Most times, you do not just give people hope; you restore that hope through your actions.

Whether morally, socially, or financially, you are always there for us. Academically, your inspiration, advice, encouragement, and guidance have helped many of us achieve so much.

When it comes to sacrifice and service, Dr. Mide has done so much. Through your willingness to chair and support different conferences, you have contributed immensely to positioning Federal Polytechnic Bali on the map. Your moderation is consistently top-notch, and your commitment to academic excellence is truly commendable.

And how can I forget the lunch you always buy for us during the break at every conference virtual presentation? That simple but thoughtful gesture means a lot, and I remain genuinely grateful.

Dr. Mide, today I celebrate you, your generosity, your intellect, your friendship, your sacrifice, and your impact.

May God continue to strengthen you, bless you abundantly, and reward you for all the lives you have touched.

TWO-DAY ACADEMIC CONFERENCE ENDS ON A HIGH NOTE, ADVANCES RESEARCH FOR SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The two-day academic conference themed “Advancing Equity and Preparedness in Higher Education Through Integrated Research and Practice for Sustainable Economic Development” has come to a successful conclusion, bringing together scholars, researchers, academics, and other stakeholders to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and explore innovative solutions to contemporary challenges in higher education and economic development.

The conference was marked by insightful research presentations, engaging academic discussions, and constructive interactions among participants. Scholars presented research findings covering diverse areas, demonstrating the important role of research and evidence-based practice in addressing societal challenges and promoting sustainable development.

Gender Mobile Initiative Holds Sensitisation Workshop on Gender Equality and Safe Learning Environment at Federal Polytechnic Bali

The Gender Mobile Initiative, in collaboration with the Students Affairs Division of the Federal Polytechnic Bali, has organised a sensitisation workshop on Gender Equality and a Safe Learning Environment for staff and students of the institution, while also training newly selected Campus Champions.

The programme, held on Monday, August 17, 2026, at the institution’s Executive Lecture Theatre, was aimed at strengthening awareness and building the capacity of members of the Polytechnic community to prevent and respond effectively to sexual harassment, gender-based violence and other forms of misconduct.

Declaring the programme open, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr Mohammed Usman, who was represented by the Director, Academic Planning, Engr. Dr Sani Isa Abubakar, commended the Gender Mobile Initiative for its sustained commitment to combating sexual harassment and gender-based violence in tertiary institutions.

He emphasised that the safety, dignity and wellbeing of students remain central to the mission of the Polytechnic, stressing the need for all members of the institution to contribute to creating a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Dr Usman identified the CampusPal App as an important platform for reporting incidents and addressing the culture of silence often associated with sexual harassment and gender-based violence. He urged staff to uphold the institution’s zero-tolerance policy on misconduct and charged the newly trained Campus Champions to take their advocacy responsibilities seriously.

The Rector assured the organisers and participants of Management’s continued support for the initiative, including the provision of necessary logistics and technical facilities. He also disclosed that selected members of the Institutional Sexual Harassment Prevention Committee (ISHPC) would undergo joint training to strengthen their investigative and response capacities.

He expressed confidence that the collaboration would contribute significantly to improving safety, accountability and student welfare across the Polytechnic community.

Also speaking, the Director, Open and Distance Learning, Dr Yahaya Tukur, said the programme was designed principally to build the capacity of the newly selected Campus Champions.

Dr Tukur described the training as timely, particularly in view of growing concerns over sexual harassment in tertiary institutions. He noted that relevant legislation now provides a legal framework for addressing such acts and urged participants to pay close attention to the presentations and contribute meaningfully to the success of the programme.

The first resource person, Mr Emmanuel Olatunde, presented a paper titled, “Policy on Sexual Harassment for Tertiary Education Institutions.”

He defined sexual harassment as any unwanted or unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature, whether verbal, non-verbal, physical or digital, that violates an individual’s dignity or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment.

Mr Olatunde explained the different forms of sexual harassment, the applicable legal framework and possible consequences for perpetrators. He also took participants through appropriate procedures and channels for reporting cases of sexual harassment and gender-based violence.

The second presenter, Miss Sharifat Onomotse, used a short video presentation to illustrate a case of sexual harassment involving a student and demonstrated how the victim reported the incident through the appropriate channels.

She also introduced participants to the CampusPal App and explained how the platform could be used to report cases while protecting the identity of complainants.

In her closing remarks, the Dean of Students Affairs, Mrs Hauwa Bawa Pyiki, expressed appreciation to the Rector and Management, the Gender Mobile Initiative, the Students’ Representatives Council and all participants for their contributions towards the success of the programme.

She reaffirmed the importance of continued collaboration and awareness in promoting a safe learning environment and wished participants safe journeys back to their respective destinations.

The workshop further reinforced the commitment of the Federal Polytechnic Bali to promoting a campus environment where students and staff can learn, work and interact in safety, dignity and mutual respect.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP CENTRE LAUNCHES FPB CLOTHING TO BOOST IGR

Bali, 13 August 2026

The Entrepreneurship Development Centre of the Federal Polytechnic Bali has intensified the institution’s drive to diversify its internally generated revenue (IGR) with the establishment of a new commercial venture, FPB Clothing.

The tailoring and garment production outfit, established under the Centre, is designed to produce and market quality ready-made clothing for both male and female customers at affordable prices. The initiative is part of the broader efforts of the institution, under the leadership of the Rector, Dr. Mohammed Usman, to develop sustainable alternative sources of revenue while providing practical and market-oriented services to the Polytechnic community and the wider public.

The Centre, headed by the Acting Director, Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu Dodo, formally presented FPB Clothing to the Polytechnic community on 13 August 2026 at the Rector’s Conference Hall.

During the presentation, the Head of the Tailoring Unit, Malam Musa Aminu Mai-zare, displayed samples of the ready-made garments to members of the Federal Polytechnic Bali Newsletter team and students. The products were subsequently featured in the institution’s newsletter as part of efforts to create wider awareness of the new business venture.

Speaking with the Newsletter reporter in his office, the Acting Director explained that the cost analysis of the various products was being finalised, adding that the prices would be clearly displayed on all items before the commencement of full-scale sales.

Alhaji Adamu also disclosed that flexible payment arrangements had been introduced to make the products more accessible to staff. According to him, approved credit arrangements would allow interested staff members to pay for clothing through instalments via salary deductions, while customers who prefer outright payment would also have the option of paying in cash.

He noted that the initiative was designed not only as a revenue-generating venture but also as a platform for linking entrepreneurship education with real-world commercial activities and market demand. Through the initiative, students are expected to gain practical exposure to skills development, production, enterprise management and the realities of operating a business.

On behalf of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), I wish to express our profound gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the 1st Annual National Conference of the School of Science and Technology, Federal Polytechnic Bali, Taraba State, held from 28th to 30th July, 2026, with the theme "Driving National Growth Through Science and Technological Innovations."

We sincerely appreciate the Rector, Dr. Mohammed Usman, for his visionary leadership and unwavering support towards the successful hosting of this landmark conference. Our heartfelt gratitude also goes to the Registrar, Alhaji Tukur Lamido, the Management of the Polytechnic, and the Governing Council for creating an enabling environment for academic excellence.

Our profound appreciation goes to the Dean, School of Science and Technology, Dr. Lamidi B. Tajudeen, whose vision, dedication and unwavering commitment were instrumental to the success of this maiden conference. Our sincere appreciation also goes to all paper presenters, reviewers, session chairpersons, moderators and rapporteurs for their professionalism and dedication in ensuring productive technical sessions. Among the rapporteurs, we specially acknowledge Dr. Mide Philemon for his outstanding moderation, coordination and management of the virtual presentation sessions. His commitment, professionalism and effective coordination ensured that the virtual presentations were conducted smoothly and successfully, despite the initial technical challenges.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION CLINCHES REGISTRAR'S CUP AS SCIENCE LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY LIFTS RECTOR'S CUP AT FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC BALI

The 2026 Registrar's Cup and Rector's Cup football competitions came to an exciting conclusion on Thursday, July 30, with Business Administration and Management (BAM) emerging champions in the female category, while Science Laboratory Technology claimed the men's title after a dramatic penalty shootout at the Federal Polytechnic Bali Hostel Sports Complex.

In the women's final played in the morning, Business Administration and Management edged Science Laboratory Technology 1-0 to lift the 2026 Registrar's Cup. The closely contested encounter was decided by a solitary goal from Ruth Kajo, whose clinical finish proved enough to separate both sides and hand BAM a memorable victory.

Science Laboratory Technology fought hard in search of an equaliser but were unable to break through a disciplined Business Administration defence, as BAM held on to secure the championship.

The excitement continued in the evening with the Rector's Cup men's final between Science Laboratory Technology and Computer Science. Both teams displayed tactical discipline and resilience throughout regulation time, but neither side could find the breakthrough as the match ended in a goalless draw.

The title was eventually decided through a penalty shootout, where Science Laboratory Technology held their nerve to defeat Computer Science 5-4, sealing a well deserved victory and crowning themselves champions of the 2026 Rector's Cup.

The successful conclusion of both competitions showcased the sporting talent, teamwork and competitive spirit of students across the institution, while promoting unity and healthy rivalry among departments.

Meanwhile, the sporting activities will continue on Friday, July 31, with a friendly football match between the Staff Team and the Students' Team. The match is scheduled to kick off at 4:00 p.m., and members of the Polytechnic community have been invited to attend and support their respective teams.
