The Federal Government has suspended the enforcement of the 4% FOB charge by the Nigeria Customs Service.

Omachi, the Permanent Secretary for Special Duties for the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, announced the suspension in a statement.

The statement reads: “Pursuant to the powers vested upon the Honourable Minister of Finance and the Cordinating Minister of the Economy under Part III, Section 12 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023 as the Chairman of the Board of Nigeria Customs Services, I write to direct the immediate suspension of the implementation of the collection of 4% Free on Board (FOB) recently levied by the Nigeria Customs Service on all imported goods.

”Following extensive consultations with industry stakeholders, trade experts, and relevant government officiais, it has become clear that the implementation of the 4% FOB charge poses significant challenges to the Nigerian trade facilitation, environment and economic stability. Many importers and businesses have raised concerns about the increased financial burden this levy imposes, with potential adverse effects on inflation, trade competitiveness, and the overall business climate in Nigeria.

”This suspension will provide an opportunity for comprehensive stakeholder engagement and a thorough review of the levy's framework and its broader economic implications. The Ministry of Finance iooks forward to working closely with the Service and all relevant parties to devise a more equitable and efficient revenue structure that supports both revenue generation and economic growth and stability.

Dangote has confirmed that the distribution of free fuel will proceed as planned.

In a statement last night, the management of Dangote Refinery said that the recent criticisms from certain oil and gas industry associations were strategically aimed at undermining their planned initiative for distributing free fuel.

The statement reads: “have made it abundantly clear that the actions and threats issued by them is not borne out of legitimate concerns about unionisation, but a calculated campaign of economic sabotage that is orchestrated by vested interests who perceive progress as a threat to their entrenched positions.

“In January 2022, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) reported that one of DAPPMAN’s members had supplied petrol containing over 15% methanol, well above acceptable limits (Methanol which is not a standard industry practice or procedure for refinery, but blenders use it to prompt up the octane rating to an acceptable level that is well above anti-knocking ratio).

“The result was widespread engine damage for thousands of end users. Yet, no transparent government inquiry or independent investigation was ever conducted to determine the source, intent, or full impact of the adulterated fuel.

“This figure reflects the very scenario that DAPPMAN and its affiliates appear to advocate for in Nigeria. The Dangote Refinery has positioned Nigeria as a primary source of affordable petrol feedstock for West Africa, despite the refinery importing over 60% of the crude oil it processes. Remarkably, the refinery is able to offer petrol at prices below the international benchmark within the sub-Saharan region.

“It is increasingly evident that DAPPMAN and some of its members are disproportionately focused on the importation of refined products, even admitting to round-tripping, whereby petrol produced by the Dangote Refinery is re-imported from Togo into Nigeria at a markup.

At the Golden Panda International Cultural Forum, I joined the Dialogue of Icons panel to reflect on the theme: “Through the Lens, Bridging Civilizations.”

I spoke from the Nigerian Film Industry perspective about how technology should move at the service of culture, not the other way around. About how film, even in a world of rising walls, still has the power to connect people when authenticity is preserved and reciprocity is respected.

Most importantly, I spoke about the future, the role of young filmmakers. The Nigerian Film Industry itself was built on the courage of youth, and the next chapter of global cinema rests on their originality. My message was clear: authenticity is what truly travels. The world doesn’t need more copies the world needs you.

BREAKING: One person has been confirmed dead after the collapse of a three-storey building in Alagomeji, located in the Yaba area of Lagos State.

The ill-fated building, located at 333 Borno Street, Alagomeji, caved in on Friday night.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in its Day 2 incident report on Saturday, confirmed that the body of a male victim was pulled from the rubble during ongoing rescue efforts.

The update shared on its official X handle disclosed that emergency responders, including officials of NEMA, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and the Fire Service, remain on-site.

“So far, four persons have been rescued and are in stable condition,” NEMA stated.
