The recent article by one Muhammad Aliyu Songuy opposing the proposed conversion of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi into a conventional university exposes, at best, a narrow understanding of higher education development, and at worst, a reluctance to accept positive reform. While public debate is healthy for democracy, it must be guided by facts, context, and a vision that transcends sentiment.
I darely condemn his myopic against the conversion of prestigious Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University. First of all, will the conversion ends science or technology based education ? The answer is capital 'NO'.
Below represents key rationale behind the conversion of the University, to stand the tests of time - serving interests of Nigerian students across many disciplines:
1. Education Must Evolve with Society
Songuy’s argument assumes that ATBU must remain a purely technological institution simply because it was founded as one. This thinking ignores a basic truth — that education is dynamic, not static.
When ATBU was established in 1980, Nigeria needed more engineers and technologists to drive post-oil industrialization. But four decades later, the needs of the nation have broadened. The country now requires well-rounded graduates who can blend technology with governance, management, agriculture, law, and health sciences.
To insist on a narrow structure in the face of new realities is not preservation — it is stagnation.
2. A Conventional University Does Not Mean Abandoning Technology
Contrary to Songuy’s fears, removing “Technology” from ATBU’s name does not mean scrapping its engineering excellence. Rather, it means building upon that foundation to include other critical fields.
The proposed change will allow ATBU to retain its core strengths in engineering and applied sciences, while adding faculties that will make it a full-fledged university capable of serving a wider range of academic interests.
Indeed, the most successful universities in the world — such as MIT and Stanford — combine engineering, medicine, economics, and humanities under one umbrella.
3. National and Regional Benefits
ATBU’s conversion is not just about institutional pride; it’s about access and development.
The North-East region, with millions of young people hungry for education, lacks a large conventional federal university offering all major fields. By expanding ATBU’s academic base, more students will have the opportunity to study Law, Medicine, Social Sciences, and Agriculture without leaving the region.
This reform will also boost Bauchi’s local economy, attract research funding, and position the university as a centre of innovation and policy thinking for the entire region.
4. Global Standards Demand Inclusivity
In today’s knowledge economy, no serious university isolates science from society. The world is moving toward interdisciplinary learning — combining technology with entrepreneurship, policy, and sustainability.
Nigeria cannot remain trapped in outdated educational models.
A modern ATBU will be better equipped to train engineers who understand economics, scientists who grasp ethics, and leaders who apply technology to governance. That is the essence of progress.
5. Constructive Criticism vs. Fear of Change
While Songuy has every right to express his opinion, it is unfortunate that his argument is rooted in fear rather than foresight. Great institutions thrive because they evolve; they do not resist reform.
ATBU’s conversion is not political — it is strategic, inclusive, and forward-looking. It reflects Nigeria’s determination to create universities that can compete globally and respond locally.
In conclusion Songuy’s article may have raised concerns, but his view remains myopic and resistant to the future. The proposed reform will not dilute ATBU’s legacy; it will expand it. It will turn a respected technological university into a comprehensive institution capable of shaping the future of education in Northern Nigeria and beyond.
ATBU deserves evolution, not limitation.
