Gov. Diri Inspects Gas Turbines Project, Assures Progress Towards 24-Hour Electricity Supply

In a notable shift from the festive New Year celebrations, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State conducted an inspection of the ongoing Gas Turbines project at Elebele this afternoon. The visit comes amidst growing concerns among Bayelsans regarding the delays impacting the planned commencement of the project.

Expressing his understanding of the public's apprehensions, Governor Diri shared optimism regarding the project's future, stating, "There is a ray of hope for the completion of the power plant." He announced that six out of the eight gas turbines have been successfully installed, while the remaining two turbines, alongside other crucial components, have arrived at Onne Ports and are scheduled for transportation to Yenagoa.

Following his assessment of the installation progress, the Governor received updates from engineers and technicians, confirming that the project has achieved an impressive completion rate of over 90 percent. This Independent Power Plant is a flagship initiative of his Government of Assured Prosperity, aimed at ensuring a 24-hour electricity supply for the region.

Governor Diri urged the citizens to exercise patience and understanding, assuring them of the government's unwavering commitment to delivering the project. "This initiative is pivotal for the economic transformation of our dear state," he stated, reinforcing the administration's dedication to improving the living standards and economic prospects of Bayelsans.

Tinubu: No substantial reason to stop new tax laws — January 1 commencement sacrosanct

President Bola Tinubu says implementation of the tax reform laws will commence as scheduled on January 1, 2026.

In a statement on Tuesday, Tinubu said the reforms are a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a fair, competitive, and robust fiscal foundation, and they are not designed to raise taxes.

PUBLIC NOTICE!!!

PROHIBITION OF MOVEMENT OF WOOD AND FOREST PRODUCTS AND SUSPENSION OF DREDGING ACTIVITIES IN BAYELSA STATE

The Ministry of Environment hereby informs members of the general public that with effect from 1st January, 2026, the movement, transportation, or conveyance of wood, timber, and all forest products is strictly prohibited within Bayelsa State and across all its boundaries. This ban covers all land and maritime routes without exception.

Accordingly, this prohibition applies within, into, out of, and through Bayelsa State, encompassing all roads, waterways, creeks, rivers, jetties, and coastal areas within the territorial jurisdiction of the State.

In addition, the Bayelsa State Government hereby directs that all sand dredging and land dredging activities across the State shall cease.

All dredging activities within the New Yenagoa City are to cease forthwith, and all dredging operators currently operating within the New Yenagoa City and its environs are hereby directed to vacate the affected areas with immediate effect.

All other dredging operators operating in other parts of Bayelsa State are to cease dredging activities with effect from 1st January, 2026, and are required to seek and obtain proper location approval and authorisation from the relevant government authorities before any future operations may be considered.

This directive applies to all dredging operators, whether operating on land, inland waterways, rivers, creeks, or coastal environments, without exception.

These measures form part of the Bayelsa State Government’s sustained commitment to environmental protection, conservation of forest and aquatic resources, prevention of ecological degradation, and the eradication of illegal logging and unauthorised dredging activities.

In view of the foregoing, all individuals, transporters, companies, associations, and operators engaged in the harvesting, transportation, or trading of wood and forest products, as well as land and sand dredging activities, are hereby directed to strictly comply with this directive.

Furthermore, any community, community leadership, or traditional ruler found to be aiding, abetting, shielding, or collaborating in prohibited logging, transportation of forest products, or dredging activities shall be held jointly liable and dealt with in accordance with the relevant laws of Bayelsa State.

Be advised that any person, group, or operator found to be in violation of this order shall be arrested and prosecuted in line with applicable State laws.
No exemptions shall be granted.

To ensure full compliance, the Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with relevant security agencies and enforcement bodies, shall carry out strict enforcement of this directive across all parts of the State.

The general public is therefore urged to cooperate fully with the Government in safeguarding Bayelsa State’s environment for the benefit of present and future generations.
