I usually watch my 7-month-old daughter cling to an orange slice as though her life depended on it. After many months of breast milk and formula, there is a glow in her eyes every time I give her a slice of orange to suck. You can see the excitement. Now, it’s even such that when she sees me cutting the orange and sucking the juice, she makes gestures as though requesting her share.

Today, before I stepped out of the house for work, my wife made a comment about what our baby's facial expression would be when she tastes ice cream or candy for the first time. When she made this statement, I said, "That would make for a great piece of writing to encourage someone out there…" I said this in response to her thought on how we often cling to something for too long when we should let it go and enjoy the different and many fulfilling experiences that life brings our way. She then mentioned how God might be trying to get us to let go of the old to enjoy the goodness He is bringing our way.

I am now thinking about the traumas that we have allowed to shape the way we look at the world. I believe there is so much to learn from this narrative, more than what my words allow me to describe. I want to let you all know that I am learning so much about myself.

Recently, I’ve had to reflect on all I have done in the past decade and what the future holds. I am particularly grateful for conversations I’ve had with Precious Imuwahen Ajoonu; conversations I am privy to just because I work closely with her. I have learned so much about reflection as a way of achieving tremendous growth and being self-aware. I am discovering my innate motivations for the causes I am passionate about. Some innate motivations I would come to share, soon.

As we commit to our growth, we must self-reflect to see what needs to change and what we need to improve.

Until we speak again, keep growing!

As I look back on the path that has brought me to where I am today, I am reminded of a moment in my childhood. I was just a young boy, hawking on the streets of Dutse, a small community in Abuja. It was a time when my peers were more concerned with playing soccer and boasting about the goals they scored. I was one of them, yet there was something deeper stirring within me; a desire to be more.

One morning, after I was done hawking, I made a silent promise to myself: "I will not be ordinary." It wasn't just a thought; it was a self-proclaimed prophecy, one that I held onto with conviction, even though I didn't fully understand why it mattered so much to me at the time.

Almost a decade later, life took an unexpected turn. I couldn't complete my secondary school education because of a situation I will share later. I battled with low self-esteem seeing my 'mates' finishing secondary school and going on to the university. During that one year, I began to awaken my interest in digital tools and technologies. I went from learning how to operate the computer, to learning how to repair hardware, format a computer, install all sorts of software and hardware, I was learning so much.

I did not know that a decade later, I will come to learn that a year I considered the most devastating of my life, would change my whole life dramatically. It was at that moment I realized the power of education in transforming the life and living condition of anyone.

I began teaching and transferring my knowledge. A young boy I taught how to blog, went on to start his own and made enough money to open what was known then as a 'cybercafé.' I mentored a couple of teenagers at my local place of worship and went on, later, to start a social learning community providing learning experiences for young people in Namibia, Kenya, and Nigeria.

Today, as a learning experience designer, I have the privilege of curating and creating educational programs for youth in the Global South. From a boy who once didn't know what his future would hold, to someone who now empowers others through education, I am a testament to the power of learning as a tool for transformation.

In the coming days, I will share testimonials from the young people whose lives have been changed through our work. Education, as I have learned, is not just a path to personal success; it's a means to turn ordinary people into extraordinary change makers.

I am currently taking a course on the Social Model of Disability, and I find it quite intriguing. It offers a much richer and deeper perspective on the conversations around 'people with disabilities.' I'm not only learning about the various words or phrases used to describe this group but, more importantly, about the impact these words have in shaping our perception of these individuals.

While reading the materials, a thought occurred to me. Upon reflection, I realized that this thought wasn't new; it had been buried in my mind for some time. In many ways, we all live with disabilities, perhaps on different levels, but does that distinction really matter?

What's even more troubling is that society has a way of disabling certain individuals. I speak as though I am removed from this experience, but I am not.

The social model of disability shifts our focus to the disabling barriers that limit the full participation and equality of people with impairments and how these barriers can be removed.

This perspective is not so different from the challenges many university students face. When students graduate without a clear sense of how they can contribute to society or their future workplaces, it's fair to say that the university system is disabling our young people. Or perhaps I am overthinking this.

My goal is to ensure that every young person reads this and finds a way to create their own enabling environment with the resources they have. I believe this is possible, and I believe education plays a significant role in addressing the inequalities that exist in our communities.

I have always believed that when people go to the university without a clear strategy of how they would curate their learning experiences to advance their life and career, they often buy into the not-so-true idea that "school na scam."

I believe with a bit of intentionality and commitment, any university student can curate their university experience in such a way that it positions them for life after school, and a life of impact and influence.

This will form my conversation as I return to my Alma mater to speak to some of the brightest young people I know, in their JUNE edition of their BUSINESS MEETING on the topic "Defining the Decade: Maximizing Your Days on Campus as a Student."

I will be sharing our story of resilience and commitment and how we started our journey at GoABitFurther Africa.

Starting where you are at can be the most powerful step you take towards achieving your dreams.

Often, we wait for the perfect moment or the ideal conditions, but the truth is, there is no better time than now to begin.

Embracing your current situation, with all its challenges and opportunities, allows you to grow and adapt in ways you never imagined.

By taking small, consistent steps, you build momentum and confidence, gradually transforming your reality.

Remember, progress is more important than perfection. So, take a deep breath, believe in yourself, and start moving forward. Each day brings new chances to learn, to improve, and to get closer to where you want to be.

What dies before it breathes? A life without purpose!
