Frequently Asked Questions on the recently launched NIGERIA JUBILEE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM.

WHAT IS THE NIGERIA JUBILEE FELLOWS PROGRAMME?

The Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme is a 12-month, on the job youth empowerment partnership initiative between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Against a backdrop of rising global unemployment and underemployment, the Fellowship seeks to bridge the gap between young graduates and organisations human resource demands on the job market by connecting talented Nigerian youth with local work opportunities.

HOW IS THE NIGERIA JUBILEE FELLOWS PROGRAMME DIFFERENT FROM OTHER YOUTH EMPOWERMENT INITIATIVES?

We realize how difficult it is to get a job in Nigeria as a graduate with no experience. The Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme (NJFP) grants highly-skilled Nigerians with little or no work experience access to work at the most sought-after private sector organizations on the market, opening them to a world of opportunities. Other programs and initiatives tend to require some sort of advanced requirement from applicants or lower the entry bar in terms of the kind of opportunities that are available. NJFP does the opposite by inviting qualified applicants across a level playing field without compromising the pedigree of organizations that will play host to successful Fellows. Oh, and the programme will serve all of Nigeria – from North to South and East to West – ensuring that organisations and youth from all corners of the country can participate.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Recent Nigerian Graduate who graduated from the university or other tertiary institution of corresponding level not earlier than 2017. Must have completed the mandatory NYSC. Graduated with Second Class Lower.

HOW LONG IS THE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM?

12 months.

IS THE WORK PLACEMENT A FULLTIME EMPLOYMENT?No. The work placement is a 12-month work opportunity that provides the jubilee fellow an opportunity to acquire ‘on-the-job’ skills and gain work experience with the aim of improving employability and competitiveness for the job market.

4 clear pathways are available for the Jubilee Fellow at the end of their active engagement in the fellowship.
High performing Jubilee Fellows may go on to be retained by their respective host organizations.
Fellows with interest in entrepreneurship would have garnered sufficient skills and knowledge on the job which can be transferred to.
Competitive enough to move on.
Alumni Network – building a formidable network of people.
WHERE WILL I WORK?
Fellows will be matched with host organizations based on their interests as well as those aligned to the organisation.
DO I GET TO CHOOSE WHICH ORGANIZATION I WANT TO BE DEPLOYED TO?
No, you get matched.
DO I GET A CHANCE TO SELECT A PREFERRED LOCATION FOR MY WORK PLACEMENT?
Yes.

IS THIS A PAID OPPORTUNITY?
Yes. Fellows will receive a monthly stipend.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FOR AN ORGANIZATION TO JOIN THE NJFP?

APPLY FOR THE 20,000 POST-NYSC FG/UNPD JOB. SEE LINK BELOW.

The Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme is a fully paid post-NYSC work placement programme for Nigerians, that will provide an opportunity for mentors who are already engaged in various industries and have gained relevant experience and built capacity over the years to provide mentorship and support for the young Nigerians that will be on the programme.

See link: https://www.njfp.ng

Beyond the skills and work experience, we will be building a new culture of mentorship and guidance that can chart a new course for skills development and work experience in our country.

As this programme creates new opportunities for 20,000 recent graduates annually, we expect that the beneficiaries will maximise the opportunities presented to them and maximise their 12 months of engagement on the programme.

I will encourage all eligible Nigerians to apply for this programme, I also urge private sector organisations in Nigeria to join us on this programme to provide work placement opportunities, mentors, and funding to support the programme.

I would like to say thank you to the United Nations Development Programme and the European Union for their support on this vital initiative.

The Programme is hereby formally launched: https://www.njfp.ng

BREAKING NEWS: OVER 200 STUDENTS KIDNAPPED FROM SCHOOL IN TEGINA, RAFI LGA OF NIGER STATE

Reports reaching Daily Advent indicates that more than 200 students of an Islamiyya school have been kidnapped from their school in Tegina, Niger State.

Many were critically injured while one person has been confirmed dead from the attack which was carried out at about 3:00pm on Sunday.

According to sources, the Salihu Tanko Islamiyya school where the incident took place, was built by a retired Immigration Officer.

The abduction came a day after 14 students from a university in northwestern Nigeria were freed, having spent 40 days in captivity.

A spokesman for Niger state’s police said in a statement that gunmen on motorcycles attacked the town of Tegina, in the Rafi local government area of the state, at approximately 3pm on Sunday.

He said the attackers were “shooting indiscriminately and abducted a yet to be ascertained number of children at Salihu Tanko Islamic school”. One person was shot dead during the attack and a second person was seriously injured, the state governor’s spokeswoman said.

Armed groups carrying out kidnapping for ransom have been responsible for a series of raids on schools and universities in northern Nigeria in recent months, abducting more than 700 students for ransom since December.

The school’s owner, Abubakar Tegina, told reporters in a phone interview that he witnessed the attack.

“I personally saw between 20 and 25 motorcycles with heavily armed people. They entered the school and went away with about 150 or more of the students,” said Tegina, who lives approximately 150 metres (about 500 feet) from the school.

“We can’t be exact because most of them have not reported to the school as at that time,” he said, when asked for further details of the number taken.

Tegina said there are approximately 300 pupils aged between seven and 15. He said pupils live at home and only attend classes at the site.

One of the school’s officials, who asked not to be named, disclosed that the attackers initially took more than 100 children “but later sent back those they considered too small for them, those between four and 12 years old”.

The state government, in a series of tweets, said the attackers had released 11 of the pupils who were “too small and couldn’t walk” very far.

SENATE SET TO PASS BILL SEEKING 15 YEARS JAIL-TERM FOR ANYONE PAYING RANSOM TO KIDNAPPERS

The Senate on Wednesday considered a bill that seeks to prohibit the payment and receipt of ransom for the release of any person kidnapped, imprisoned or wrongfully confined.

According to the bill, Nigerians who pay ransom to kidnappers and kidnappers who receive ransom risk 15 years imprisonment.

The Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which scaled second reading during plenary is sponsored by Senator Ezenwa Francis Onyewuchi.

Leading debate on the bill, the lawmaker said the piece of legislation seeks to amend the Terrorism (Prevention) Act, 2013 to outlaw the payment of ransom to abductors, kidnappers and terrorists for the release of any person who has been wrongfully confined, imprisoned or kidnapped.

According to Onyewuchi, the bill essentially seeks to substitute for section 14 of the Principal Act a new section to read, “Anyone who transfers funds, makes payment or colludes with an abductor, kidnapper or terrorist to receive any ransom for the release of any person who has been wrongfully confined, imprisoned or kidnapped is guilty of a felony and is liable on conviction to a term of imprisonment of not less than 15 years.”

He raised alarm that kidnapping has become a fast and lucrative business, adding that, “it has now remained the most virulent form of banditry in Nigeria and the most pervasive and intractable violent crime in the country.”

Continuing, the Senator said, “Kidnapping is on the increase in Nigeria and it is prevalent across all the geopolitical zones.

“Some blame the rise of this criminal activity on poverty, politics, deficiency of existing laws, unemployment, connivance of security agents, corruption, and greed among others.
“Our unemployed youths are also turning out to kidnapping to get money (ransom) as a survival strategy.

“Whatever the reason, it is most obvious that kidnapping in Nigeria puts everyone at risk, the rich and the poor, old and young, male and female, foreigner or indigene, expatriate or non-expatriate, traditional rulers and religious leaders, among others.”
