Minister Inaugurates HYPREP Advisory Committee to Strengthen Ogoni Engagement
The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, has sworn in members of the Central Representative Advisory Committee (CRAC) of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project in Abuja, in a move aimed at enhancing community engagement in Ogoniland.
The newly inaugurated committee is tasked with facilitating dialogue and strengthening communication between HYPREP and host communities, as efforts continue to address environmental degradation in the region.
The committee is led by its spokesperson, Suanu T. Y. Baridam, alongside other prominent traditional rulers and stakeholders drawn from across Ogoni communities.
Speaking shortly after the inauguration, Mrs. Mary Ndume, a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, expressed appreciation to the minister and the HYPREP Project Coordinator, Nenibarini Zabbey, for her inclusion in the 10-member body. She noted that she was particularly honoured to serve as the only female member of the committee.
The appointments, approved by the HYPREP Governing Council last week, were said to reflect the members’ strong community leadership credentials and deep understanding of Ogoni culture and conflict resolution mechanisms.
Other members of the advisory committee include Samuel L. A. Nnee, Stephen Kpea, J. D. Nkpe, Hyacinth Vibie Leema, Jonathan Mubana, Keeper Gbaranor, Nengu James, and Ehiose Igbinowanhia.
The CRAC is expected to play a pivotal role in ensuring that the voices of host communities are adequately represented in the implementation of HYPREP’s environmental remediation programmes in Ogoniland.
