Abe's Character Under Fire - Alleges Orchestrated Smear Tactics, Vows Legal Recourse
Former SDP governorship candidate and prominent Ogoni political leader, Magnus Ngei Abe, has, again, broken his silence over growing criticism trailing his recent political position, alleging that a coordinated campaign has been launched to destroy his reputation.
In a strongly worded statement issued amid rising political tension in Rivers State, Abe described the attacks against him as “defamatory publications” deliberately designed to tarnish his image and undermine his political standing.
“My attention has been drawn to a series of defamatory publications about me, designed to defame my character and tarnish my hard-earned reputation,” he stated.
The former senator said he was not surprised by the attacks, insisting that desperate political actors often resort to propaganda and sponsored blackmail whenever their political fortunes begin to decline.
According to him, the growing backlash against his political choices is part of a broader attempt to intimidate and silence dissenting voices within the political space.
Abe defended his stance on the ongoing debate surrounding Ogoni political interests and the 2027 governorship calculations, maintaining that Rivers politics cannot be won through ethnic sentiment alone.
He argued that only a broad-based multi-ethnic political alliance can produce sustainable political success in Rivers State, stressing that emotional tribal campaigns would ultimately fail.
“Based on my knowledge and practical experience of Nigerian and Rivers politics, I am convinced that a multi-ethnic political alliance has a far better prospect for political success in Rivers State than sponsored tribal campaigns of hatred and bigotry,” he said.
The former lawmaker also clarified that he has not abandoned the dream of producing a governor of Ogoni extraction, but insisted that such ambition must be pursued through strategic planning, political collaboration, and realistic coalition-building.
“I have not abandoned the dream and my vision of a Rivers governor of Ogoni extraction. But there needs to be a plan and strategic pathway to that goal,” Abe declared.
His comments appear to be a direct response to mounting criticisms from some Ogoni political voices who accused him of failing to support the current push for an Ogoni governorship project.
Without mentioning specific names, Abe accused some self-acclaimed activists and political actors of hypocrisy, recalling that many of those currently attacking him openly worked against his own governorship ambition in 2023.
According to him, despite the opposition he faced during his campaign, he refused to promote tribal bitterness or ethnic division.
“When I contested for the governorship of Rivers State, some of today’s so-called activists held town hall meetings to campaign against me, and I respected and protected their right to do so,” he stated.
The former senator warned that while criticism remains part of democracy, deliberate falsehood and cyberbullying would no longer be tolerated.
He revealed that he has directed his lawyers to commence legal action against individuals spreading what he described as defamatory statements against him.
“To those who believe that cyber-bullying is the only effective way to promote their candidates, I have also decided to bring this to the attention of security operatives whose duty is to enforce our laws,” Abe warned.
He further insisted that no amount of propaganda or coordinated attacks would force him into political submission or compel him to abandon his convictions.
“I cannot be put in a political straight jacket by any amount of cyber bullying and character assassination,” he said.
Abe called on Ogoni people to embrace peace, tolerance, and healthy political competition, stressing that different political visions should be allowed to coexist without hostility.
He maintained that history and time would eventually vindicate him.
“For no amount of lies and propaganda can change the facts and alter the truth. The truth will always prevail, and time will surely tell,” he concluded.
