"SERVE WITH INTEGRITY, INNOVATION," IBAS TELLS NEWLY INAUGURATED BOARDS

The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, has charged newly inaugurated Boards and Agencies to rise to the moment with integrity, urgency, and innovation.

He declared that their appointments must translate into tangible progress across the state.

Vice Admiral Ibas spoke during the inauguration ceremony at the Executive Chamber of Government House, Port Harcourt on Friday.

The Administrator reminded the appointees that their roles are not ceremonial. "This is a call to duty," he said. "You are here not to fill seats but to lead boldly, professionally, and transparently."

The newly constituted boards include the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board, the Senior Secondary Schools Board, the Internal Revenue Service Board, the Microfinance Agency, the Contributory Health Protection Programme Board, the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital Board, and the Rivers State Waste Management Agency.

Addressing the education sector, the Administrator gave a stern warning. "Government will continue to support education, including meeting funding obligations, but accountability must guide every kobo spent. Transparency and efficiency are not negotiable," he said.

“We must also overcome one of our greatest weaknesses, the absence of reliable data. Without accurate information, there can be no effective planning or progress."

He charged the Universal Basic Education Board and the Senior Secondary Schools Board to address overcrowding in classrooms, improve infrastructure, enforce discipline among teachers, and reverse the state’s declining education metrics.

“I charge both boards to establish strong systems to track enrollment, teachers' deployment, infrastructure and performance. I also charge you to leave the comfort of your boardrooms to visit the schools, not only in Port Harcourt, but in the remotest parts of our state.”

Turning his attention to economic institutions, Vice Admiral Ibas stated clearly that Rivers State must begin to reduce its reliance on federal allocations. “The work you are about to embark on is not just about collecting taxes. It is about building trust, strengthening accountability, and ensuring that resources of Rivers State are mobilised to serve our dear people.”

He tasked the Internal Revenue Service Board with modernising tax systems, closing revenue leakages, and ensuring fairness in tax collection.

“Your responsibility is to identify, harness, and harmonise every legitimate source of revenue. This means expanding the tax net so that more individuals and businesses contribute fairly, while ensuring that the burden on honest taxpayers is not unfairly increased.”

To the Microfinance Agency, his message was one of empowerment. “You are to stimulate our economy from the bottom up. Make credit accessible to small businesses. Give our young entrepreneurs a fighting chance. Support market women, artisans, and those who power our informal economy.”

On health, the Administrator spoke with visible conviction. “The Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme will play a central role in the health ecosystem of our state. This programme is not only about healthcare, it is about dignity, security and the promise of a better quality of life.”

He reinforced his administration’s goal to provide affordable, and in many cases free, healthcare for the most vulnerable. “Pregnant women, children, the elderly and those living with chronic conditions deserve the assurance that their health needs will not be neglected. This programme must deliver on that promise.”

He also addressed the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital Board, underscoring its dual role in providing specialist care and training future health professionals.

“As a teaching hospital, it is not only a center for advanced medical healthcare but also a hub for training the next generation of doctors, nurses, and health professionals. The progress we make here will directly influence the quality of healthcare delivery across the state and beyond.”

Vice Admiral Ibas addressed the newly inaugurated Waste Management Agency, calling their task both urgent and critical to public health. “The management of waste is not a cosmetic issue. It is a matter of public safety, environmental protection, and urban renewal,” he said. “You must lead the charge to rid our cities and communities of filth.”

He revealed that the state had already taken proactive steps, including the procurement of modern equipment and the construction of access roads to landfill sites. “These investments demonstrate our seriousness, but their effectiveness will depend on your commitment and capacity to deliver.”

He challenged the Agency to think beyond disposal and begin converting waste into value. “Around the world, waste is being transformed into power, fertilizer, and raw materials for industry. Our state cannot be left behind. I expect this board to explore partnerships, innovations, and technologies that will convert our waste from nuisance into an asset for sustainable development.”

“Discipline and enforcement must be restored. Dumping refuse indiscriminately on the streets, drains and public spaces is a crime against ourselves and our future, he said. “Lead with integrity. Act with urgency. Think boldly. Rivers State is watching, and expecting results,” he added.

₦ 142 Billion for Bus Terminals: Another Evidence of misplaced Priority- Peter Obi

The difference between the success and failure of the development in any nation is how you prioritise your scarce resources.

The recent announcement that a sum of ₦142 billion has been approved by the Federal Government for the construction of one bus terminal in each of our six geopolitical zones further affirms the lack of competence, lack of focus and poor leadership.

In the 2024 budget, which is the operational budget today, the entire budget of all the teaching hospitals across all the federal universities in the country, as well as the federal psychiatric centres, is under ₦100 billion, yet the government has approved ₦142 billion for bus terminals.
This is disturbing, considering that Health is one of the most critical areas of development, which is deteriorating and remains grossly underfunded. WHO recently reported that over 20 million Nigerians are living with mental health issues.

This is not only a misplaced priority but a tragic irony of our country.
This is not governance.

PDP's crisis continues as Wike Rejects Convention Plan.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said he is not aware of any proposed elective convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), vowing to challenge the plan alongside his group.

Wike said he and his allies in the party would be meeting to review the decision, stressing that they would not allow any “injustice” to stand.

Asked if he was planning a parallel convention, Wike replied, “I am not aware that they are going for a convention in Ibadan.

As a NEC member, I have not been told, and nobody has invited me for a NEC meeting. If those people who are working as a team say they are holding NEC, so be it.

If no notice of meeting has been served on me as a member of NEC, I have every right to challenge that, and no one can deny me my rights.”

‘When People Go Low Or Into Gutters, I Don’t Go With Them’ —Oyo Governor Makinde Responds To Wike On PDP Crisis

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has said he will not go low with the camp of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, which is opposing the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, in Lagos, after the Southern Zonal Consultative Meeting of the party, Makinde, who was asked about the threat from the Wike group regarding the party's convention, simply said, “Personally, when people go low, or they go into the gutters, I don’t go with them. Some people are not going into the gutters. We will reach out to them. That is democracy."

“I can disagree with people, but there shouldn’t be anything personal here. It should be about what we are giving to Nigerians because they are watching,” Makinde stated.

"In all our states, they showed last Saturday that PDP is not dead. In most other places of the 12 states, PDP came second. It is an indication to us that if we continue to work hard, we can reclaim the confidence of Nigerians.”

Earlier, Wike had threatened that there may be a fresh crisis if the PDP refused to acknowledge the zonal congress that elected Dan Orbih as National Vice Chairman, South-South.

He was quoted as saying this during Channels TV’s Politics Today programme on Tuesday.

"Well, it is over for now. There are a few things remaining and I have told them that they must do it. Our congress was held in Calabar, and there’s nothing anybody can tell us. If they want to have another round of crisis, so be it,” he said.

“In that congress, Chief Dan Orbih emerged as the National Vice Chairman. They never wanted the congress to hold but congress was held."

He continued, “The so-called Acting National Chairman of the party wrote a letter to INEC after congress was held that the congress has been postponed.

“There are no two ways about it. The National Vice Chairman of PDP South-South is Chief Dan Orbih. If they don’t agree, that’s another round of crisis.

"The South-East Vice Chairman, Ali Odefa, is no longer a member of the party. These are the things I tell people. What I don’t like is impunity. And for someone like me, we will not condone it. I will not allow it. We will fight it except they correct it.’’

He also kicked against the upcoming national convention of the party.

He said, "They said that they are going for their convention in November. I am not part of it until they have corrected it. Let us wait, there is still time for them to resolve it. Before you talk about the convention, resolve the matter.

“If the matter is not resolved, there will be a crisis. I am not aware that any convention would be held in Ibadan. As a NEC member, nobody has informed me, and no such decision has been voted on by NEC. If a few people gather to make pronouncements, that cannot pass for NEC.”

Fabeke to Rivers Govt: You Have No Power to Approve Oil Exploration in Ogoni Land

Tension erupted on Wednesday during a high-stakes stakeholders’ meeting convened by the Rivers State Government to address ongoing disputes over alleged illegal operations by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) in Ogoni land, Tai Local Government Area.

The meeting, which brought together representatives of Ban-goi, Bunu, Oloko 1 & 2, Ledor, and Dumbee communities, alongside NNPCL officials, was facilitated by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, representing the Sole Administrator of the state.

Disagreement broke out when it was announced that, for the time being, only security-related jobs would be made available to Ogoni people by the NNPCL. The pronouncement was met with stiff opposition from Rev. Dr. Douglas Fabeke, President of the Ogoni Liberation Initiative, who raised a point of order.

Dr. Fabeke condemned the move, warning against what he described as a deliberate attempt to marginalize and divide Ogoni communities. He insisted that neither the Rivers State Government nor the NNPCL has the authority to approve oil exploration in Ogoni land.

“Ogoni matters go beyond the powers of the state government or the NNPCL. Only the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has the authority to negotiate oil business in Ogoni land. Any attempt to cede our land and resources to outsiders is a colonial style takeover — and it will never succeed,” Fabeke declared.

He further cautioned community representatives against accepting inducements or gifts from external actors, stressing that such offers are designed to sow division among Ogoni people.

Fabeke maintained that the 14 communities in Tai LGA allegedly affected by NNPCL operations remain deeply wounded from decades of exploitation, displacement, and pollution. According to him, many residents of the impacted areas are still in exile, while others live as refugees in foreign lands.

“How can operations begin when our people are still scattered and communities unreconstructed? Any oil business in Ogoni without full restoration and genuine participation of our people is dead on arrival,” he said.

The Ogoni Liberation Initiative leader urged the people to remain united, law-abiding, and vigilant, emphasizing that only broad-based engagement anchored on justice and transparency can bring lasting peace and development.

The meeting ended in deadlock, with no clear resolution, as Fabeke advised the communities to disregard further negotiations unless they are transparent, inclusive, and in the true interest of Ogoni people.

PENSION FRAUD: RIVERS GOVT HANDS OVER MAN WHO IMPERSONATED LATE BROTHER DURING VERIFICATION

The Rivers State Government has handed over one Dornu Nkari to the police for impersonating his deceased brother during the ongoing pensioners’ verification exercise.

Nkari was caught after officials discovered inconsistencies in the state’s biometric database, leading to a closer investigation. The fraud was further uncovered when his nephew, Barine Nuete, confessed to persuading Nkari to pose as his late father in a bid to raise funds for burial expenses.

Speaking on the development, the Acting Head of Service, Dr. Inyingi Brown, described the incident as unfortunate but noted that it highlights the effectiveness of the state’s biometric verification system in detecting fraud.

Dr. Brown issued a stern warning to anyone planning similar acts, stating that the government will not tolerate fraudulent claims. Both suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue.
