I honestly don't understand why people single out one player whenever a national team loses.
When Argentina loses, people say, "Messi lost the World Cup." When Portugal loses, it's "Ronaldo lost." But football is a team sport, not a one-man game.
Messi isn't Argentina, and Ronaldo isn't Portugal. They represent their countries alongside many other players, coaches, and staff. If a team doesn't make it to the end, it's the team—and ultimately the country they represent—that fell short, not just one individual.
Celebrate great performances and criticize poor ones if you want, but acting as though one player alone won or lost the tournament ignores how football actually works.
Why are we so quick to blame one person for a result that depends on an entire team?
