The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) recently removed the “3-attempts” window rule for qualifying exams. Until now, candidates had just three chances to pass, but with this policy, there’s no limit anymore.
For some, this change is a relief. It reduces exam pressure, gives room for those with personal or financial setbacks, and aligns with global practices where multiple attempts are allowed. It also ensures no aspiring nurse is permanently locked out because of limited trials.
But others are worried. Without limits, students may lose seriousness, and the discipline nursing requires could be weakened. Standards might be questioned if passing becomes a matter of repeated tries rather than strong preparation. It may also overstretch exam resources and shift focus from competence to persistence.
At its core, the policy raises one big question: is this a step toward fairness and inclusivity, or could it water down seriousness and professional standards in nursing
