A Universal AI for Creating New Molecules and Materials

Imagine an AI that can invent both new medicines and new materials for building better batteries or solar panels—using the same brain. That’s what scientists have developed with a new model called the All-atom Diffusion Transformer (ADiT).

Normally, AI tools that generate new atomic structures (like molecules or materials) need to be specially tailored for each type. Even though the physics behind them is similar, molecules and materials have traditionally required separate models. ADiT changes that. It brings molecules and materials into a single, unified framework—sort of like teaching one artist to paint both portraits and landscapes with equal skill.

Here’s how it works:

1. It starts by translating complex atomic structures into a shared "language" using an autoencoder (a type of neural translator).

2, Then, a special type of AI called a diffusion model learns to dream up new versions of these structures in that shared language.

3. Finally, the autoencoder translates these ideas back into real atomic designs—either new molecules or new materials.

ADiT uses Transformer technology (similar to what powers ChatGPT) to do this more quickly and efficiently than older models. And it works: when tested on large datasets of molecules (QM9) and crystal materials (MP20), it outperformed current best-in-class models made just for each domain.
