Vegan Journey Advocacy Champions Compassion with New Vegan Course in School curriculum.

In a significant step toward value-based education, The Vegan Journey Advocacy has officially partnered with Brotherhood Model College, Calabar, to launch a groundbreaking educational initiative aimed at integrating vegan education into the school curriculum tagged The Vegan Climate School Program.

This program seeks to enlighten students on the principles of compassion towards animals, responsibility, and informed decision-making among young learners, shaping a generation that values kindness, sustainability, health and the global impact of conscious dietary choices as it affects the environment.

The formal partnership was reached during a meeting held today Wednesday 24th September, 2025 with the management of the college, where the Founder of The Vegan Journey Advocacy, Mrs. Joy Mong, presented the vision and structure of the initiative. Following a productive dialogue, both parties agreed on full collaboration, with the school with deep commitment and support for the program.

In her response during the meeting, the school Principal Tari Pujeh expressed strong enthusiasm, noting that the program aligns with the mission of Brotherhood Model College; to nurture responsible, empathetic, and informed students.

In her words _"this partnership reflects our commitment to progressive, holistic education that prepares our learners not only for exams, but for life_ She stressed.

Through interactive lessons, workshops, and real-life activities, the program will encourage students to think critically about food systems, health, and their role in creating a sustainable future.

The noble initiative will place Calabar town as a model city for compassionate education, it is the first of its kind in Nigeria.

WHAT YOU STAND TO GAIN WHEN YOU EAT OFADA RICE IN PLACE OF THE WHITE POLISHED RICE.

Ofada rice, a locally grown, unpolished Nigerian variety of rice (often brown or partly milled) is highly valued not only for its unique flavor but also for its nutritional benefits.

Ofada rice is more nutrient-dense than polished white rice — providing fiber, protein, minerals, and antioxidants that support heart health, blood sugar balance, digestion, and overall wellnes.

Below are the key nutrients:

1. Rich in Fiber

Because it is unpolished, Ofada rice retains its bran layer, making it high in dietary fiber.

This helps improve digestion, prevent constipation, and promote satiety (feeling full), which supports weight management.

2. Supports Heart Health

Its fiber and natural oils help lower LDL (bad cholesterol) levels.

Contains magnesium, which supports healthy blood pressure and heart rhythm.

3. Source of Plant Protein

Ofada rice provides more protein than most refined white rice varieties, aiding muscle repair and energy.

4. Rich in Antioxidants

It contains compounds like phenolics and flavonoids that help fight free radicals, reducing the risk of chronic diseases.

5. Good for Blood Sugar Control

The high fiber and lower glycemic index (compared to white rice) means it digests more slowly, preventing sudden blood sugar spikes — beneficial for people with diabetes.

6. Packed with Micronutrients

Iron: Supports blood formation and prevents anemia.

Zinc: Boosts immunity and healing.

Magnesium & Selenium: Support nerve function, metabolism, and antioxidant defense.

B-vitamins (thiamine, niacin, riboflavin): Help with energy production.

7. Bone and Muscle Health

Its magnesium and phosphorus content contribute to stronger bones and better muscle function.

8. Weight Management

Its fiber content improves fullness and prevents overeating, making it good for weight-conscious individuals.

Ofada rice is more nutrient-dense than polished white rice — providing fiber, protein, minerals, and antioxidants that support heart health, blood sugar balance, digestion, and overall wellnes.

Veganism & Women’s Health

During last Sunday’s Vegan Journey Advocacy Series on Sparkling FM 92.3, Calabar, our session was led by Mrs. Joy Mong, Vegan Advocate and Founder Vegan Journey Advocacy Vegan Journey , she shared valuable insights on how a well-planned vegan lifestyle can support women through every stage of life.

We explored the female health journey from menstrual cycles to pregnancy, fertility, and menopause and highlighted how plant-based nutrition plays a supportive role:

🔹 Menstrual Health : Fibre-rich meals, moringa, and ginger may help ease cramps, bloating, and mood swings.
🔹 Pregnancy & Breastfeeding : 100% safe with proper planning. Prioritize beans, soy, leafy greens, fortified plant milks, and always include a B12 supplement. (Tip: Moringa is best introduced from the third trimester.)
🔹 Fertility : Balanced plant foods help regulate hormones, support ovulation, and promote reproductive health.
🔹 Menopause: Soy, sesame seeds, and calcium-rich greens can reduce hot flashes and strengthen bone density.

Myth Buster: Women can get enough protein, iron, and calcium on a vegan diet through smart food pairings like beans + rice, greens + citrus fruits, and fortified soy milk.

Here in Nigeria, cultural pressure around meat is strong, but our markets are filled with affordable, nourishing plant-based options: ugu, waterleaf, millet, sesame, plantain, okra, groundnuts, soybeans.

Easy first steps:

Swap meat for mushrooms or soy chunks in stews.

Replace dairy with fortified soy milk.

Try tofu or mushroom suya for a delicious night option.

Whether it’s your monthly cycle, pregnancy, or menopause, plant-based eating can truly empower women’s health and wellbeing.

Would you consider trying a plant-based plate for your health journey? 🌱

Join us every Sunday at 7 PM on Sparkling FM 92.3, Calabar for an educative 1-hour live session on Veganism & Lifestyle.
