M.A (Religious Studies), M.Th, M.Div. and M.T.S. --What's the Difference?
These four Master degrees are common among those who study religion and theology. However, four of them are different from each other and has its own opportunities and limitations.
Honestly, possessing one of them should not make one to think that he/she can do the work others do, even if you know the work.
Follow me....
I. Master of Arts (M.A.) in Religious Studies
The Master of Arts in Religious Studies is mainly an academic and research-oriented degree that studies religion from critical, historical, philosophical, and social perspectives.
M. A. is not a ministerial degrees, so it is not designed for church leadership, Students are trained to analyze issues such as ethics, interreligious relations, African Traditional Religion, philosophy of religion, religion and politics, public theology, and religion in society.
In Nigeria, M.A degree is mostly offered in universities under Faculties of Arts or Humanities through Departments of Religious Studies or Religion and Cultural Studies. It is highly respected in secular academic environments because it encourages critical thinking, research, writing, and interdisciplinary scholarship.
This degree is the best for individuals who desire to study religion academically across traditions rather than primarily preparing for pastoral ministry. It also serves as a strong foundation for doctoral studies such as PhD programs in Religious Studies, Theology, Ethics, or related disciplines.
II. Master of Theology (M.Th.)
The Master of Theology is an advanced theological degree that focuses deeply on Christian theology and specialized theological scholarship.
The thing good about M.Th is that it usually goes beyond foundational ministerial education and provides deeper engagement with areas such as Biblical Studies, Systematic Theology, Historical Theology, Christian Ethics, Missiology, and Pastoral Theology.
I must tell you, unlike what many think, M.Th is often research-intensive and academically rigorous.
In the Nigerian context, the M.Th. offered by seminaries, theological institutions, and faith-based universities. The most suitable people to get this degree are pastors, seminary lecturers, theologians, and church scholars who want advanced theological competence. Though not too popular, but people can also use the M.Th. as preparation for doctoral studies such as the PhD or Doctor of Theology (Th.D.).
Unlike the M.A. in Religious Studies, the M.Th. is more confessional and specifically Christian in orientation. While the M.A. may study religion broadly and comparatively, the M.Th. concentrates mainly on Christian theological depth and scholarly reflection within the church tradition. But this doesn't mean that students cannot specialize in different areas.
III. Master of Divinity (M.Div.)
The Master of Divinity is primarily a professional ministerial degree designed for practical church leadership and pastoral formation.
This program concentrates less on academic theology but more on real-life ministry preparation. Students are trained in preaching, pastoral care, counseling, evangelism, church administration, worship and liturgy, leadership, and biblical interpretation.
In Nigeria, the M.Div. is offered in seminaries, Bible colleges, Pentecostal institutions, and denominational theological schools. It is often considered the standard professional degree for pastors and ministers. Graduates commonly become pastors, missionaries, chaplains, counselors, church administrators, and ministry leaders.
Compared to the M.A. in Religious Studies or the M.T.S., the M.Div. is much more practical and ministry-focused. While the other degrees may concentrate heavily on academic research and theoretical reflection, the M.Div. is designed to prepare individuals directly for active Christian ministry and church leadership.
IV. Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.)
The Master of Theological Studies is an academic theological degree that allows students to study theology intellectually without necessarily preparing for pastoral ministry.
M.T.S stands between M.A and M.Th. It has less emphasis on practical ministry formation.
In Nigeria, the M.T.S. is not as common as the M.Div., M.Th., or M.A. in Religious Studies, but it is gradually becoming more recognized through private seminaries, theological institutions, and partnerships with foreign theological schools.
This degree is suitable for individuals who want a strong theological education for academic, research, writing, or teaching purposes without focusing mainly on pastoral work.
