UNICAL Orders 214 LLB II Students to Return to Original Departments

The University of Calabar management has directed 214 students in the LLB II class who were not originally admitted into the Faculty of Law to return to their initial departments, citing eligibility concerns for the Nigerian Law School.

This was disclosed in a meeting held on Monday, August 4, 2026, between University Management, Faculty Management, and the LLB II class. The meeting was also attended by the President and Vice President of the Law Students’ Association of Nigeria, UNICAL Chapter, LAWSAN-UCC.

According to LAWSAN-UCC, the Vice-Chancellor revealed that out of the _435 students_ currently in LLB II, only _221 students are officially law students_.

The management stated that students who entered the faculty through other departments will not be eligible to proceed to the Nigerian Law School if they continue in the Faculty of Law under their current admission status.

As part of immediate actions, the university said the portals of the affected students have been temporarily locked to enable transfer to their respective original departments.

*Relief Measures Announced*
To cushion the effect, the University Management announced two options for affected students:
1. *Full refund* of school fees paid for the 2025/2026 academic session; or
2. *Free tuition* for the 2026/2027 academic session in their original departments, to be borne by the University.

LAWSAN-UCC in a statement signed by the Executive Council said the publication was to keep members of the faculty informed of the decisions reached.

The association acknowledged the β€œemotional impact of this development” and urged students to remain calm, supportive, and respectful as the process unfolds. It added that further official updates will be communicated.

NUCJ-UCC Honours Communication Students' Press Outfit with Faculty's First-Ever Award

By Chibuikem Caleb George

The Nigerian Union of Campus Journalists, University of Calabar Council (NUCJ-UCC), has presented the Best Faculty Press Outfit Award to the press outfit representing students of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, marking the first time the faculty has received a major award since its establishment.

Following the recognition, members of the award-winning press outfit paid a courtesy visit to the Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Professor Andrew Essien-Esekong, on Tuesday to formally present the plaque to the faculty.

Receiving the award on behalf of the faculty, Professor Essien-Esekong described the honour as a historic milestone and commended the students for projecting the image of the faculty through excellence in campus journalism.

He urged members of the press outfit to remain committed to journalism, recruit more students into the Nigerian Union of Campus Journalists and strive for even greater achievements.

"Take a look around this office. There is still ample space waiting to be filled with honours that reflect the excellence of this faculty. Let this be the beginning. Go out, distinguish yourselves, win more awards and bring them home so that this faculty's legacy will continue to grow," the Dean said.

Speaking during the presentation, Chief Editor of the press outfit representing students of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Comrade George Chibuikem Caleb, described the award as a victory for the entire faculty, noting that the recognition belongs to every staff member and student who has contributed to the faculty's growth.

He expressed confidence that the achievement would inspire future generations of students to pursue excellence in journalism, leadership and service.

The Mass Communication Students' Association Adviser, Dr Mrs Faith Agbo, also congratulated the students on the historic feat, describing the award as a testament to hard work, dedication and professionalism. She reaffirmed the faculty's commitment to supporting students interested in campus journalism.

Other members of the delegation, including Comrades Ezikpe Joy, Bridget Ogban Kanu and Adie Theresa, described the recognition as the result of teamwork, sacrifice and unwavering commitment throughout the academic session.

The visit concluded with a group photograph featuring the Dean, faculty representatives and members of the students' press outfit, commemorating the presentation of the faculty's first-ever major award.

`Source: Unical Public Relation Unit`

In a public notice issued by the Public Relations Unit, the university stated that admissions into *Medicine and Surgery, Medical Laboratory Sciences, and Dentistry* have been suspended for the upcoming session.

The Registrar, *Dr. Mrs. Chukwuka I. Icha*, advised all candidates who chose UNICAL as their first choice institution to visit any JAMB office near them to effect a change of institution immediately.

The management also clarified that UNICAL is not the only institution affected, noting that *three other universities* are in the same situation.

The university further urged candidates and the general public to disregard unverified information circulating on social media regarding the directive.

UNICAL GOVERNING COUNCIL DISMISSES 8 STAFF, SANCTIONS ONE OVER MISCONDUCT

Source: Public Relations Unit, University of Calabar

The Governing Council of the University of Calabar has dismissed eight members of staff and delayed the promotion of another over various acts of misconduct, in what management describes as part of its zero-tolerance policy on unethical practices.

The sanctions were contained in a memo signed by the University Registrar and Secretary to Council, Dr. Mrs. Icha Chukwuka, following deliberations at the 174th Meeting of Council on the report of disciplinary cases presented to it.

According to the memo, Prof. Emilia Oyira of the Department of Nursing Science was dismissed over alleged cases of examination misconduct.

Four other academic and non-academic staff were also dismissed for alleged absence from duty and abandonment of post. They are Mr. Ukachukwu Echezunachi Darlington of the Department of Chemical Pathology, Mrs. Akinrinade Opayemi Ogunluyi of the Department of Microbiology, Dr. Arum Priscilia Nchekwube of the Department of Internal Medicine, and Mrs. Okoi Nyesam Eni of the Clinical Medical Hostel.

The Council also dismissed Mr. Joseph Edet Okon of the Works Department for alleged vandalization and carting away of armoured cables, and Mr. Eworo Valentine Ibor of the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry for alleged falsification and alteration of examination results.

In addition, Mr. Emmanuel Adariku of the UNICAL Alumni Relations Office was dismissed for the unauthorized withdrawal of funds from the β€˜Friends of Malabor/Alumni Trust Funds’ account.

Dr. Mathias Agba of the Department of Nursing Science escaped outright dismissal but will have his promotion delayed for two promotional years. He will also forfeit 50% of his withheld salary for negligence of duty in connection with an alleged case of examination misconduct.

The University Management, under the leadership of Vice Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, reiterated its commitment to rebrand the institution on the foundation of β€œintegrity and excellence in service delivery.”

The management warned that it will continue to deal decisively with all forms of unethical practices within the university community.
