Court Orders UNICAL to Grant 214 Law Students Unrestricted Access to Lectures, Portal

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the University of Calabar (UNICAL) to grant 214 affected law students unrestricted access to lectures, the students’ portal and other academic amenities pending the determination of the substantive suit.

The order was issued by Hon. Justice J. O. Abdulmalik in the case of Chidi Glad & 213 Ors. v. University of Calabar & 3 Ors.

The development was disclosed in a statement posted on Facebook by Bernard Okpi Esq., Managing Partner of OBA Attorneys, who represented the affected students in the matter.

According to Okpi, the court proceedings featured legal arguments from both the students’ legal team and counsel representing the defendants.

Okpi appeared alongside Confidence Mbang Esq., Bennedict Otu Esq., Udoh Ekanem Esq. and Kenneth Ibobo Esq. for the 214 law students, while Jonas Abuo Esq. and Akiba-Eyo Veronica Esq. represented the 1st, 2nd and 3rd defendants.

In his account of the proceedings, Okpi stated that counsel for the defendants, Jonas Abuo Esq., informed the court that although the defendants had been served with the originating processes, they were unable to file their response because the Vice Chancellor and Registrar were out of the country.

Abuo reportedly told the court that he had only filed a conditional memorandum of appearance and requested an adjournment to allow the defence to respond to the suit.

Opposing the request, Okpi argued that the defendants had been served on August 24, 2026, and had already exhausted the statutory 30-day period for filing their response.

He urged the court to proceed with the hearing or, if an adjournment was granted, award ₦2 million in costs against the defendants and allow the claimants to move their motion for interlocutory injunction.

Following the arguments, Justice Abdulmalik delivered a bench ruling and granted the interlocutory orders sought by the claimants.

The court consequently ordered the University authorities to maintain the status quo and immediately restore full academic access to the 214 affected law students pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

UNICAL Releases 2026/2027 Academic Calendar, Sets October 19 Resumption for New Students

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has released its approved academic calendar for the 2026/2027 academic session, outlining key dates for registration, lectures, examinations, students’ activities and vacation.

According to the calendar, new students are expected to arrive on Friday, October 16, 2026, while screening and registration will commence on Monday, October 19. Returning students are scheduled to begin registration from Thursday, October 22, with lectures for all students set to commence on Monday, November 2, 2026.

The first semester will run for 18 weeks, comprising 12 weeks of lectures and four weeks of examinations, according to the approved schedule.

Key first-semester activities include Students’ Week in December, Christmas break, Continuous Assessment in January 2027, GSS examinations from February 22–26, and examinations for other courses beginning March 15, 2027. The first semester is scheduled to end on Friday, March 26, 2027.

For the second semester, lectures are scheduled to begin on Monday, April 12, 2027, following the 39th Convocation ceremony. Continuous Assessment is slated for June, while examinations are expected to commence in July and end on Friday, August 6, 2027, marking the beginning of the long vacation.

The calendar also notes that students’ attendance during the first three weeks of lectures must count toward assessment, while all results are expected to be uploaded within two weeks of the completion of examinations.

ALUMNI DRIVING FORCE BEHIND INSTITUTIONAL GROWTH, SAYS UNICAL VC

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, has described the Alumni Association as a driving force behind the growth and development of any institution.

The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Ekaete Enang, stated this when members of the Caretaker Committee of the NEST Chapter of the University of Calabar Alumni Association paid a courtesy visit to the University Management.

Prof. Offiong said alumni associations occupy a strategic position in the development of universities, adding that they serve as a pivot upon which institutions can rely to advance their developmental goals and processes.

According to him, “The Alumni should be in a position to woo its members to harness their potentials towards the growth of the institution without being compelled.”

The Vice-Chancellor, who noted that the UNICAL Chapter had not been as vibrant as expected in recent times, charged members of the NEST Chapter to brace up and mobilise alumni of the University of Calabar towards building a formidable and vibrant chapter.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasised that the University Management attaches great importance to alumni-related matters, noting that the strategic contributions of alumni are critical to driving the university's development and breakthroughs in all ramifications.

Prof. Offiong congratulated members of the Caretaker Committee on their appointment to oversee the affairs of the Chapter and midwife the forthcoming election.

He described the assignment as an uphill task that requires commitment, unity and effective mobilisation.

Earlier, the Director, Directorate of Alumni Affairs, University of Calabar, Prof. Saturday Etuk, thanked the Vice-Chancellor for the warm reception accorded the delegation.

He said the gesture demonstrated the true spirit of the University of Calabar and its commitment to maintaining strong relationships with its alumni.

Prof. Etuk stressed that the Alumni Association holds the key to strengthening linkages, institutional growth and collaboration.

He added that there was need to sustain efforts towards laying a solid foundation for the development of the Association and the University.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the NEST Chapter, Prof. Walter Mboto, said the visit was to pay homage to the head of the institution and formally intimate him of the plans and programmes of the Chapter.

He said the Chapter was being driven by the vision of “Towards a Better Institution.”

Prof. Mboto explained that the Caretaker Committee would serve for a period of six months from the date of its inauguration.

He said within that period, it would work towards repositioning the Chapter and preparing the ground for a substantive leadership.

He disclosed that, considering the large number of UNICAL alumni members within the institution, the Chapter was developing a platform that would provide a common space for identifying, connecting and engaging members.

The Chairman further disclosed that as part of efforts to give back, the National Body of the University of Calabar Alumni Association will organise a one-day agricultural training programme for final-year students of the Faculty of Agriculture.

He said the initiative was aimed at equipping the students with practical skills, promoting self-sufficiency and empowering them for life after graduation.

Prof. Mboto also expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for accepting to host the National Executive Council meeting of the University of Calabar Alumni Association in 2027.

Also speaking, the Public Relations Officer of the UNICAL Alumni NEST Chapter, Mr. Agare Onoriode Israel, commended the Vice-Chancellor for his leadership and efforts towards repositioning the University.

He also appreciated the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Ekaette Enang, for representing the Vice-Chancellor and for creating time to receive the delegation despite her busy schedule.

CPGS Provost Calls for Comprehensive Digital Literacy at University of Calabar

The Acting Provost of the College of Postgraduate Studies (CPGS), University of Calabar, Prof. Anne Asuquo, has called for comprehensive digital literacy across the university, stressing the need to include non-teaching staff and computer operators in digital capacity-building programmes.

Prof. Asuquo made the call while declaring open a three-day Train-the-Trainer Workshop organised by ICDL Africa at the Postgraduate School E-Library. The workshop is themed, “Building a Digitally Skilled Academic Community.”

The Acting Provost described the initiative as timely and commended ICDL Africa for its commitment to strengthening digital competence within the academic community.

She noted that digital proficiency is essential for efficient institutional operations, effective service delivery and proper archiving of university data.

However, Prof. Asuquo stressed that digital training should extend beyond academic staff to include non-teaching personnel and computer operators.

According to her, broadening participation in digital capacity-building programmes would help ensure seamless digital operations and sustain the gains of digital transformation across the university system.

Facilitating the workshop, Mr. Promise Yima-or Alaghga said the programme was designed to equip selected staff of beneficiary institutions with the knowledge and practical skills required to become effective trainers in their respective Accredited Test Centres (ATCs).

Mr. Alaghga explained that the International Certification of Digital Literacy (ICDL) is a globally recognised certification programme operating in more than 100 countries and designed to provide an objective measure of practical competence in computer applications and digital devices.

He said the certification helps to improve users’ confidence, efficiency and productivity while promoting the effective application of technology for academic and professional purposes.

The facilitator took participants through key areas including ICDL implementation, ATC management, trainer responsibilities, interactive learning methods and assessment for certification.

He emphasised the critical role of trainers in guiding learners from the training stage through to certification, urging them to understand the abilities of their learners, set clear learning objectives and adopt interactive and relevant teaching methods.

Mr. Alaghga also outlined the responsibilities of key personnel within an Accredited Test Centre. These include the Coordinator, who oversees daily administration; Accredited Testers, who supervise examinations and ensure quality assurance; and Trainers and Technical Support personnel.

He added that ATCs are responsible for promoting the programme, registering and managing candidates, providing training, conducting tests and facilitating certification.

The hybrid workshop, which combines physical and online sessions, features practical exercises, module-focused training and preparations for certification.

The initiative is expected to strengthen institutional capacity for digital skills development and support the expansion of digital competence within higher education.

PROF. OFFIONG CONSTITUTES ACADEMIC BOARD FOR ODL CENTRE

…Appoints Prof. Stella Asibong Ansa as Chairman

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, has constituted the Academic Board of the University’s Open and Distance Learning Centre (ODLC) to strengthen academic governance and enhance the effective administration of the Centre.

The development was contained in a letter signed by the University Registrar, Dr. Chukwuka I. Icha.

According to the letter, the newly constituted Board is saddled with the responsibility of making decisions and recommendations on academic matters, students’ affairs, counselling, library and learning resources, material delivery, textbooks, training and capacity development, students’ assessment, and other academic issues relating to the Centre.

The Board will be chaired by the Director of the Open and Distance Learning Centre, Prof. Stella Asibong Ansa, while the Deputy Director, Prof. Kevin Usman Anoh, will serve alongside other members drawn from relevant academic and administrative units of the University.

Other members of the Board are the Dean of the Faculty of Administration and Management Sciences, Prof. Ezekiel Tom Ebitu; Head of the Department of Business Management, Dr. Sunny Isaac Eneh; University Librarian, Prof. Aniebiet Ntui; Programme Coordinator, Dr. Hope Edodi; and Examination Officer, Dr. Stephen Magor Ellah.

Dr. Amah E. Etim will serve as the Board’s Administrative Secretary.

The University Management has directed the newly constituted Board to take the necessary steps towards its formal inauguration and ensure that its activities are carried out in line with the University’s statutes, regulations, policies and established academic procedures.

Management also assured the Centre of its continued support towards the effective operation and development of the Open and Distance Learning Centre.

Earlier today, the Nigerian Union of Campus Journalists, University of Calabar Council (NUCJ-UCC), under the leadership of Comrade Fasoranti Timilehin Francis, paid a courtesy visit to the Dean of the Student Affairs Division, Prof. Eyo Mensah Offiong.

The visit focused on addressing challenges confronting the union, promoting responsible journalism on campus, and seeking the Dean’s support and partnership in advancing the activities and objectives of NUCJ-UCC.

The Dean warmly received the delegation and assured the union of his support. He encouraged the leadership to approach his office whenever they encounter challenges, further pledging to stand with the union and provide necessary guidance whenever required.

NANS South South Zone B to Host Students Leadership Summit 2.0 in Calabar

The Office of the Assistant Secretary General of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South South Zone B, is set to host the Students Leadership Summit 2.0 on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, in Calabar, Cross River State.

The summit, themed “The South-South Question: Empowering Emerging Leaders: Charting a Path for Development, Improved Individuals and a Crime-Free Region,” is aimed at engaging young and emerging leaders on leadership, development and issues affecting the South-South region.

The event is scheduled to take place at the College of Health Sciences, Management and Technology (COHSMATECH), Mary Slessor, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

The summit will feature a lineup of special guests and speakers, including the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Dr. Emmanuel Ironbar; Wife of the Chief of Staff, Eld. Dr. Mrs. Virginia Ironbar; Rector of COHSMATECH, Dr. Ita Ikpeme; Dr. Mrs. Abasiobik Akpabio, SA to the Governor on Student Advocacy; Chief Magistrate Otu Ekpo Otu; Hon. NUCJ at 40: Pat Okonkwo Recounts Union’s Founding and Early Days at UNICAL

A former member of the Nigerian Union of Campus Journalists (NUCJ), Pat Okonkwo, has revealed historical details about the origin and early development of the union, stating that NUCJ was founded at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) around 1986.

According to Okonkwo, the pioneer founder and first President of NUCJ was Comrade Nwabueze Ugorji Nwabueze Ugorji, a Theatre Arts graduate of the University of Calabar, who later worked briefly with Cross River Radio in Calabar.

He disclosed that the first national convention of NUCJ was held at the University of Calabar in 1988, during which the then NUCJ-UNICAL Chapter President, Jenkins Okoh, was elected National President. Okoh, according to Okonkwo, is now deceased.

Okonkwo further recalled that NUCJ maintained a close relationship with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, under the leadership of one Okonkwo, who, he said, adopted the campus journalists and their chapter as non-paying members of the union.

Describing campus journalism in the pre-1990 era, Okonkwo said student journalists operated press clubs that published news and articles on raw sheets of paper, which were displayed on billboards covered with glass for protection and aesthetics.

He mentioned some of the press clubs active at the time as Premier Press Club, Echo Press, ELSA Press and Malabor Press.

“Some of us went ahead to join the national press and broadcast industry with distinction,” Okonkwo said, reflecting on the impact of the early campus journalism movement.

He also revealed that the NUCJ Dinner was an annual event held every December, adding that he served as Public Relations Officer of the union from 1987 to 1989 and was also an ex-officio member of the national body.

According to him, there was no Department of Mass Communication at the University of Calabar before 1990. He noted that Theatre Arts and the Department of English and Literary Studies were among the academic disciplines closest to journalism at the time.

However, he stressed that membership of the campus press was not restricted to particular faculties or departments, as students from across the university participated actively in journalism.

Okonkwo's account provides an insight into the early history of campus journalism at the University of Calabar and the evolution of NUCJ as a platform for training and developing student journalists who would later contribute to Nigeria's media industry.
