*GOODWILL MESSAGE OF THE VICE-CHANCELLOR, PROFESSOR OWUNARI A. GEORGEWILL ON THE OCCASION OF THE 64TH INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION OF NIGERIA.*
It is that time of the year again when we collectively show patriotism to our dear nation.
Our dear members of the staff, unique students, esteemed host communities, strategic partners and stakeholders, on this auspicious day, we extend our warmest regards to each of you. Today holds great significance for us as a nation. It is a reminder of the hard-fought battles and sacrifices made by our forebears to secure our freedom and sovereignty. We honour their courage and determination, as their unwavering belief in a better Nigeria has made this day possible.
Since gaining independence, our country has faced many political, economic, and social challenges. Yet, Nigeria’s story has also been one of resilience, strength, and unbreakable spirit. We have faced hardships, but each time, we rise, driven by our shared hope for a brighter future. This is the Nigerian spirit—the resilience and doggedness that characterize us as a people.
Today, as we reflect on our journey, we must not lose faith in our country. Yes, there are ongoing challenges but these challenges are not insurmountable.
Our past is proof that we can overcome adversity. Therefore, we urge us all to continue believing in the future of Nigeria and to work tirelessly towards the realization of that vision – the vision of a greener Nigeria.
As academics, we hold a unique responsibility. The service we render through education, research, and innovation must always be driven by a commitment to nation-building. Our students, our research, and our contributions to knowledge are all part of the fabric that will shape Nigeria’s future. Let us never forget that our nation depends on us to put it first in all we do, knowing that the solutions to our present problems often lie in the academic and intellectual pursuits we undertake.
On this Independence Day, let us renew our resolve to serve Nigeria with passion, uphold the values of unity, peace, and progress, and contribute meaningfully to the development of our country. Together, with our collective effort, we can continue to forge a path that brings hope, prosperity, and lasting peace to all Nigerians.
May we continue to grow stronger as a nation, and may the University of Port Harcourt continue to be a beacon of excellence for Nigeria and beyond.
Happy Independence Day Celebration!
