Anambra Landlord Refunds House Rent To New Tenant On Hearing He's From Ebonyi State

The affected tenant, Ifeanyichukwu Eluu, who's a Pastor shared his experience online. He wrote:

“The last experience I had, getting an apartment in Anambra state wasn't a good one. I had paid 100% for the apartment to the caretaker, preparing to settle in after signing the necessary tenancy agreement the following day.

"But there was a reconsideration afterwards, we had stayed for a longer time in a hotel. So, we needed to quickly move into the property, of which we informed the caretaker about the move. We rushed to get the basic things to equip the house right away and the same evening, we moved into the house.

"Around 12 midnight, I saw an alert of the exact Money I paid to the caretaker. I called him right away, he said the landlord refunded the Money when he heard we're from Ebonyi state," Abakaliki" as generally refered.

"I felt so insulted, embarrassed, as well, very concerned at such level of discrimination against fellow brothers.

"The last place I finally got a house, the Man asked where I'm from, I told him "Afikpo". Then he said, okay, I know Afikpo, they are partly Abia state, I can consider you, that's how we settled. But I wasn't happy that I had to route through such bias just to get a house to live in

"Please, let the concerned handlers review this in time, hence the maxim "Igbo bu ofu".

Detractors plotted my removal but failed, Fubara boasts

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, says he is not pretentious about his commitment to providing quality leadership.

He stated that those fighting his administration wanted to dampen the spirits of Rivers people and forcefully truncate the pace of development but they had failed.

He, therefore, encouraged Rivers people not to be disheartened over the ongoing political crisis rocking the state, assuring the residents that nothing would stop him from steering the affairs of the state successfully.

The PUNCH reports that an impeachment move by Rivers lawmakers against the governor saw the factionalisation of the state Assembly.

The impeachment move by 27 lawmakers loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike was resisted by five lawmakers loyal to Fubara.

The crisis led to the destruction of the Assembly complex with an explosive on the night of September 29, 2023, and its eventual demolition by Fubara on December 13.

Fubara’s estranged political godfather and successor accused the governor of destroying “the structure” he left in place, indicating that a feud between them was at the root of the crisis.

Speaking on Sunday night at the New Year’s Eve crossover church service at St. Paul’s Archdeaconry Parish in Opobo Town, Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, Fubara said his detractors, who wanted him out of office, had failed.

A statement on New Year’s Day by his media aide, Boniface Onyedi, quoted Fubara to have said, “What they want is this red biro, but it is still with me. We are the winners because we are still signing with the red biro.

“As long as we are signing with the red biro, development will continue in Rivers State.”

He vowed that nothing would stop his administration from getting to its destination because its foundation was laid solidly in God “who alone will give us the grace to complete the process of building.”

The governor, who said he had already designed a developmental agenda for Rivers State in 2024, stressed that he would not relent in working for the good of the state.

He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for the fatherly role he played to douse the Rivers crisis, by convening a parley in Abuja, during which an eight-point resolution was signed.

“Like I keep saying, it takes a responsible man to be a father. He (Tinubu) acted like a father. On our part, we will continue to give him all the necessary support because if he does not succeed in Rivers State, he will not succeed as a President.

“So, as a state, we will continue to give him every support. We are not pretenders. Our support is genuine and it is to uplift his programmes. Our sacrifices are part of the support,” he said.

He thanked Rivers people for their unwavering support, describing them as believers in true Rivers State and urged them to trust the decisions that he takes because no one would be thrown overboard as long as he remained their governor.

In his sermon titled “I will never forget you,” the Bishop of the Diocese of Niger Delta, Right Revd. Emmanuel Oko-Jaja assured Nigerians that God would restore and stabilise the nation’s economy.

To improve food security in the state, hundreds of farmers from Osun East Senatorial District received herbicides, pesticides and other farming inputs to boost production in the next farming season

Atoyebi also said the treated storage sacks can Preserve food items for 2years .He therefore encouraged the farmers to be grateful to the Senator for his foresight and proactive tendency.

Fadahunsi used the opportunity to renew his call on Nigerians to return to farm so that "hunger can be defeated in the country"

Akeredolu… A Great Man Takes A Bow By Yemi Farounbi

Eventually the great Arakunrin AKEREDOLU AKETI bid this world farewell. He was a great defender of human rights and democracy. He did this effectively as a radical left-of- the centre National President of the Nigeria Bar Association.

He confronted, at all times, the mafia that believes that they are the only ones born to rule Nigeria. He did this so courageously in the quest for establishing AMOTEKUN. While those who parade the Nigerian political landscape as defenders of TRUE FEDERALISM became dwarfs, AKEREDOLU deployed all the intellectual and professional arsenals, he so richly possessed, to tackle those who do not believe that Nigeria WILL only survive on the basis of a NEGOTIATED CONSENSUS , even at the risk of his second term ambition. Notwithstanding his failing health, AKEREDOLU fought against those who believe that Nigerian Presidency is their inheritance.

As Chairman of SW GOVERNORS FORUM and SOUTHERN GOVERNORS’ FORUM, he stood like a Rock of Gibraltar defending the concept of rotation of presidency, which is the only guarantee that all Nigerians will have equal access to political power.

I pray that Nigeria will produce more men of courage, men of principles… without whose active and timely support, DAWN would have paled into irrelevance .

Good night my brother.

Edo crisis: Obaseki slashes deputy governor’s budgetary allocation

The rift between Governor Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, may have taken another dimension as N345 million was allocated to the Office of the Deputy Governor in the 2024 Budget as against the N19bn allocated to the Office of the State Governor.

An analysis of the budget which the governor signed into law on December 15, 2023, showed that the Office of the Secretary to the State Government got N8bn far higher than the N345m allocated to the deputy governor’s office.

The document also showed that while the House of Assembly got N13bn, the Office of the Head of Service got N968m.

A source close to the House of Assembly said the slash in the allocation to the deputy governor’s office was connected to his ambition to succeed his boss as governor of the state.

It was gathered that some lawmakers believed to be loyal to the deputy governor opposed the decision of the members of the assembly to pass the budget as presented by the governor.

Lawmakers in that category were said to have described it as an “unfair appropriation” but that they were overwhelmed other members.

An insider claimed that the budget has divided the lawmakers, but a principal member of the House of Assembly said there was no division in the House.

PUNCH reports that Shaibu had last week said his office had not received any allocation in the last six months owing to the tension between him and his principal.

The deputy governor, who stated this at the unveiling of the Correspondent Office in Benin on Tuesday, said he had been running the office and doing other activities through goodwill and contributions from friends.

He said, “You know there is tension between the governor and me. And for six months, there has been no allocation to my office. So, whatever I am doing is contributions from friends and my goodwill; and I am still standing very strong.”

Chair Pastor Adeboye sat on not my seat - Olugbon explains

The Olugbon of Orile-Igbon in Oyo State, Oba Francis Alao, on Monday, explained why the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, sat on one of his palace chairs at a recent occasion in his domain.

The PUNCH reports that controversy had trailed a viral photograph on social media capturing Adeboye sitting on the royal seat.

But Olugbon, who is also the Deputy Chairman, Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, in a statement he personally signed, said, “My attention has been drawn to different kinds of reactions to a photo circulating in the social media where the G.O. of RCCG, Pastor Adeboye, sat on one of the palace chairs.

“Let me set the record straight by reminding all that Pastor Adeboye was in Orile-Igbon for an evangelism programme, which held on the playground of Olugbon High School. His chopper landed in an open space within the palace from where I received him to my living room. We spent some time talking about Nigeria and Orile-Igbon before we moved to the venue of the programme where thousands of people already gathered.

“I joined the revered priest to the venue as a mark of support for the programme given that his coming to the ancient town will be a blessing to us. And he did pray for both the town and everyone who attended.

“As a mark of honour, I offered one of the ceremonial royal chairs that are usually reserved for top dignitaries to Pastor Adeboye to be used at the programme. It should be noted that the chair is not the particular one that is reserved for the Olugbon which cannot be shared with anyone because of its spiritual and historical significance.

“The royal chairs are provided in palaces to honour high-ranking dignitaries, not to desecrate the throne. I, therefore, seek the understanding of all those expressing concern about the issue. There is a traditional royal chair that is meant for only the Kabiyesi, and there are traditional ceremonial chairs for very important persons. The throne of the ancient town of Orile-Igbon remains sacrosanct.”

The monarch, also in the state, felicitated Christians on Christmas, noting that it was “another occasion of celebrating the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is a worldwide celebration.”

“I urge all followers of Christ in Nigeria to use this period to reflect on the multiple blessings of God, particularly the grace to be alive to witness another Christmas.

“Aside from eating and drinking to celebrate his birth, Christmas is a time to make a new commitment to ensuring that our lives mirror Christ in every way. We should make a commitment to a life of righteousness, honesty and showing love to fellow men regardless of their faith and cultural beliefs,” Olugbon said.

Don’t sell everything to japa, immigration lawyer warns

An immigration lawyer based in the United Kingdom, Femi Aina, has advised Nigerians seeking to relocate abroad for greener pastures not to sell all they have to process their travelling.

Aina, who gave the advice in an exclusive interview with our correspondent at the weekend, said many Nigerians seeking greener pastures failed to realise that migration has its problems.

The immigration lawyer said some Nigerians after relocating abroad in search of a better life are now living in misery.

He said, “Don’t sell everything you have because you want to relocate. I will rather advise you to keep something behind; because you might get there and realise that the picture painted is a wrong picture. The fact that it favours some does not mean it will favour everybody, and some people might even be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and the problem will escalate from there.

“If you go to the prison in the United Kingdom, you will see a lot of Nigerians there. The initial intention they had was to japa so that everything would be fine and dandy, but the reverse is the case. People should reflect on this. Migration has its problems, before you migrate, think twice.”

The immigration lawyer pointed out that relocation was not always smooth and immigrants might be faced with initial obstacles for a few years before being able to settle down.

He added, “My advice is before you japa, think twice. Ask yourself, ‘Am I better off here or will I be better off there?’

“Also, people should know that when you go into a new country, there are lots of teething problems you are going to put up with. It might take months, it could take years before you settle down. The problem we have, I have seen people uprooting their whole family to travel.

“I saw people who had a supermarket in Idiroko, Ogun State. They sold the supermarket because they wanted to relocate to the UK. On getting to the port of entry, the wife had a serious problem, and they cancelled the visa for the father, the children and the wife. So they returned all of them to Nigeria. Where are they going to start from?

“I am not saying people should not migrate, but migration too has its own problem. That’s what people should reflect about. Going abroad is not an end itself, it could be a means to an end.

“People should know that in these countries they are going to, there is a lot of tension. It is not a country where you can get somebody to come and collect your electricity bill, but every month you’re just giving them something, so you don’t pay bill. There is financial tension. That financial tension can create arguments between a husband and his wife, leading to domestic violence.

“There are lots of people who have japa, and they now live a life of misery. They now realised, having reached where they were going, that the greener pasture was not there. I know people abroad facing a lot of different issues, problem upon problem.”

I will assess your govt after one year – Soyinka tells Tinubu

NOBEL Laureate and academic, Prof. Wole Soyinka, on Sunday, said he would reserve all his observations about President Bola Tinubu’s administration until one year into his tenure, in May 2024.

Soyinka described this as a personal policy of his, saying this one-year delay gives the President enough time to “make up” for lost grounds.

Soyinka said this when he paid a courtesy visit to the President who is holidaying in Lagos.

“Well, you know, something you may have noticed about me is that most heads of state, when they take office, I always leave them alone for about the first year…because they need time.

“I know when they come in, they don’t start from ground zero. They often start even lower than ground zero and they have to make up.

“So, I’m adopting the same principle this time. When you see me next year, ask the same question again and listen to my answer,” he explained.

Soyinka, who called Sunday’s appearance an “embarrassing visit.” said he approached the President with a seven-point agenda which he declined to reveal.

“I came here with a seven-point agenda. And we had a very thorough discussion on those items.

“Actually, it’s an embarrassing visit because when I visited him the last time, it was to try and persuade him not to run for office. I told Atiku and himself to please leave the ground so young people could run. That’s the last time we met about five years ago.

“So I came to see how he was doing after ignoring my advice. I came to see how both he and his wife were weathering Nigeria, and to wish them a Happy Christmas,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, who also visited Tinubu in Lagos, urged Nigerians to remain patient saying the economic reforms would yield prosperity if sustained.

Otti said, “One thing is that he has a very courageous, unifying policy; the exchange rate and then removing subsidy, which actually had become a scam and costing us a lot of money.

“Those policies are good but then they come with the negative sides. They come with challenges for an economy where over 60 percent of the population is living below the poverty line.

“So, it’s not going to be easy, immediately. But I believe that if we are patient and if we go through the policies without compromising, over time, things will turn around.”

The Day Osun Civil Servants Honour Governor Adeleke By Sarafa Ibrahim

It was a rare sight at the Bola Ige House on Thursday, or more appropriately, an atmosphere that anyone will ever have contemplated. Adorned in Ankara attires, workers in the employment of the Osun state filled the parking lot of the facility that houses the Governor's office to honour the state governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke.

This sounds unbelievable, but it actually happened. And the Head of Service in the state, Mr. Ayanleye Aina helped unravel the rationale behind the decision of the Osun workforce to honour Governor Adeleke by noting that while experience has shown a striking gap between campaign promises and the actual delivery of dividends of democracy the "case of our amiable Governor is a radical departure from this position as workers and retirees have continued to benefit from the kindness of the Governor."

And he was not alone with this feeling as labour leaders took turns to justify the decision to honour Governor Adeleke as the "Most Humane Governor Of The Year" award by the civil servants in the state. The significance of the event was striking and historical. Anyone who has followed events in Osun over the years will feel the same way because a poor attitude toward the welfare of workers and pensioners usually puts civil servants on a collision course with the government and hardly give room for any form of honour as done for Governor Adeleke.

The event speaks to the resounding acceptance of Osun workers to Governor Adeleke's passionate commitment to their welfare. It was a lesson in service that when a Governor puts smiles on the faces of workers by prioritizing their welfare, they are bound to reciprocate the gesture through open recognition as bestowed on Governor Adeleke. When you make governance about the people as Governor Adeleke is doing, it is almost certain that the people will acknowledge it. This was exactly what happened with the Osun civil servants and Governor Adeleke.

In the one year since Governor Adeleke has been in office, I have read and listened with relish series of testimonies of his impactful governance. The height of it came at the event put up by the civil servants to honour the governor as speaker upon speaker highlighted the good deeds of Governor Adeleke and how they affected them one way or the other.

The Head of Service, Mr. Aina noted in his speech that "Prior to the advent of your (Adeleke) Administration in the State, senior workers were owed several months of unpaid half salaries, a situation that came to the national limelight. Believing that governance is a continuum, your administration has been consistently offsetting these backlog of salary and pension arrears. As we speak, four months arrears have been paid to date. Your administration cash-backed arrears of promotions from the previous Administrations which were in millions of naira."

But the thing is, Governor Adeleke's incredible posture toward welfare is not limited to active workers. The welfare of senior citizens has seen a remarkable improvement under Governor Adeleke, which Mr. Aina pointed out during his speech. According to him, Governor Adeleke has "increased the monthly release of fund for the payment of gratuities for retirees at the State level 100%, that is from N50m to N100m" and also "increased the monthly release of fund for the new pension scheme from N175m to N350m, that is, by 100%. At the local government level, it was increased to N400m."

Perhaps this was why the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Osun State chapter, Baba Salau Ganiyu, enjoins the people of Osun to "help us thank the Governor" when he was called upon to address the gathering. The octogenarian who was apparently impressed with Governor Adeleke on the welfare of retirees declared that "He is doing wonderfully well for pensioners." Then, he highlighted many things that Governor Adeleke has done for pensioners since coming to office, particularly "the enrollment of all retirees on the health insurance scheme", which he said will handle health challenges faced by pensioners and drastically reduce incidents of untimely deaths among them.

Just like him, the Chairman of Contributory Pensioners in Osun state, Elder Gbenga Oyadare, was full of praise for Governor Adeleke for his humane disposition to the welfare of workers and pensioners. "For the first time, there is no round table discussion on the payment of half salary. If you have taken your bond, you will take it quarterly and if you haven't, you will get it monthly. Without negotiation at all, health insurance approved, to the level of operation," he said at the event.

Stories and testimonies of Governor Adeleke's astounding touching impacts like this abound across sectors and are daily shared by those impacted. Before the advent of Governor Adeleke, the attitude to the welfare of workers and pensioners was erratic just like power supply in Nigeria, exerting undeserved pains on them as reflected in the 30 months of unpaid half salary and pension arrears. Many affected workers lost hope of receiving their earned money because, for the entire forty-eight months of the immediate past administration in office, no attempt was made to pay any part of the owed wage debt. It was considered an impossibility.

Then Governor Adeleke came with his touch of humanity kind of leadership and from that point, those things considered impossible become possible. Payment of the owed half salary was initiated and in one year, four months has been paid. The promotion for civil servants done in 2019 by the past administration but not backed by the consequential financial implication was cash-backed by Governor Adeleke only a few months in office. Civil servants no longer have to bear promotion papers that do not translate to real value in terms of earnings to them as they did for nearly four years as the administration that gave it to them failed to implement the financial consequences.

The story isn't any different for pensioners in the state. Between November 27, 2022, and November 2023, Governor Adeleke has expended over N20 billion to clear inherited pension liabilities. And right at the venue of the event put up by the civil servants to honour him, Governor Adeleke issued over N2.9 billion in fresh bonds to pensioners across sectors. While retirees under state service receive N1.3 billion in bond payments, those in the local government and primary school categories got a total of N1.625 billion in bond payments. Do not forget that a few months back, Governor Adeleke enrolled the entire retirees in Osun state in healthcare coverage (the first and only state in Nigeria to do so) just to relieve pensioners of the burden of managing health challenges common with old age.

You can now see why the civil servants in Osun state choose to honour Governor Adeleke because right through his actions and deeds, he is indeed humane. He is unlike the experience of the past when civil servants and pensioners will have to pour into the streets in protest before they can get their due entitlements. That is why the civil servants could roll out the drums because they have seen a lot and can tell the difference that Governor Adeleke is a friend and deserves every honour bestowed on him.

Two things stand out in what civil servants in Osun state did for Governor Adeleke– people appreciate good deeds and nothing is more rewarding than touching lives positively. If Governor Adeleke had shown similar disdain for the welfare of workers and pensioners as some ahead of him have done, the gathering at the Bola Ige House would never have happened. And if did, it would not be to honour him but rather, something unpleasant.

Every person in Osun can see the passion that Governor Adeleke has put into solving the series of challenges he inherited. Not just addressing the welfare conundrum that defined the past but also the striking infrastructure shortage that plagued the state. And he is doing all these despite the stress that debt servicing, which stood at about N1.8 billion on a monthly basis, exerts on the derivation of the state. The long and short of it all is that, Governor Adeleke is working for the people and the clearest indication is the "Most Humane Governor of The Year" bestowed on him by the workforce of the state. Congratulations Mr. Governor.
