πŸ”Š ARE THESE AKWA IBOM CULTURAL PRACTICES DYING OUT?**

Culture is our identity, but modernization and time are quietly washing away some of our oldest traditions. Here are **5 Akwa Ibom cultural practices** that are fast becoming history. How many of these do you still remember? πŸ‘‡

1. Mbopo (The Fattening Room)

Once a proud rite of passage, young women were secluded for months, pampered, and taught the secrets of womanhood, childcare, and home management by elders.
Today Between school, careers, and modern lifestyles, who has months to spend in a room? It’s now mostly seen during cultural festivals.

2. Ekpri Akata (The Night Spirits)

The original "traditional investigators" and bloggers of the old days! They moved in the dark, using high-pitched voices to sing out the hidden secrets, thefts, and bad behaviors of community members to keep society morally clean.
Today:** Modern laws and social media have taken over the job of exposing secrets.

3. Moonlight Storytelling & Folklore

Remember gathering under the moonlight to hear elders tell stories of *Ikut* (the tortoise) and powerful ancestors? It was how our languages, proverbs, and moral values were passed down.
Today:** Phones, TVs, and busy urban lives have completely replaced the evening storytelling circle.

4. Ndomo (Indigenous Craftsmanship)

The master art of traditional blacksmithing, making the *Obodom* (wooden slit-drum), and complex raffia weaving. These skills were passed down through specific family bloodlines.

Today:** Plastic and imported goods have taken over, and fewer youths are learning these intensive, ancient trades.

5. Iban Isong & Mbiam (Traditional Justice)**

Before modern courts, the *Iban Isong* (Council of Women) and the sacred oath of *Mbiam* held absolute power. Taking a false oath meant facing the swift wrath of the ancestorsβ€”nobody dared to lie!

Today:** Modern law, the police, and Christian oaths have largely replaced these traditional dispute systems.

πŸ—£οΈ LET’S TALK:

Should we revive these traditions, or is it better to leave them in the past? Which of these did your parents or grandparents tell you about?
