The Federal Government says 27 states and the FCT have accessed ₦78.6 billion in Universal Basic Education (UBE) grants by mid-2025. This marks a 65 percent increase compared to January, reflecting improved uptake of funds.

The Ministry of Education attributed the rise to the rollout of the UBEC 2025–2030 Strategic Blueprint, which introduced a revised grant formula focused on equity, quality, and accountability. Officials also credited advocacy efforts and direct engagement with state governors.

The Minister of Labour, Muhammadu Dingyadi, has urged striking nurses and midwives to return to the negotiating table, warning that industrial action is not the best way to resolve disputes. The appeal came as the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives launched a seven-day warning strike across federal health institutions.

Talks between the union and the government began on Tuesday, but failed to prevent the strike. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for Friday at the Ministry of Health. The union says the walkout follows the Federal Government's failure to meaningfully engage during the 15-day ultimatum issued earlier in July.

At least four people have been killed and hundreds arrested during violent protests in Angola's capital, Luanda, over a recent hike in fuel prices. Police confirmed the deaths and said 400 people were arrested overnight, following earlier detentions of around 100 people on Monday.

The unrest began after the government raised the price of diesel by 30 percent, sparking anger among commuters who rely heavily on minibus taxis. Gunfire was heard in parts of the city, while shops were looted and public transport came to a standstill.

Deputy Police Commissioner Mateus Rodrigues said 45 shops were vandalised, with 25 private cars and 20 public buses damaged. Protesters also targeted banks, blocked roads, and clashed with police in several neighbourhoods including Cazenga and Rocha Pinto.

The protests, which began on July 1, are part of wider anger over Angola’s phased removal of fuel subsidies.

The United States embassy in Nigeria has drawn attention to a report highlighting the extravagant spending by state governors on government houses, despite the country’s ongoing economic crisis. The report, titled ‘Nigeria’s ruling class splashes billions on government houses’, was published by ‘The Africa Report’ and shared by the US embassy on social media.

The report said while President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians to endure hardship resulting from his economic reforms, state governors are not making similar sacrifices. It cited Oyo State, where Governor Seyi Makinde approved N63.4 billion to renovate the Government House, and Gombe State, where Governor Inuwa Yahaya is spending nearly N30 billion on a new residence and assembly complex.

The Federal Government has appealed for calm following viral footage showing some Ghanaians protesting and demanding the expulsion of Nigerians, alleging that their behaviour conflicts with Ghanaian norms. The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) condemned the “blanket” generalisation of Nigerians as criminals.

NiDCOM Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said most Nigerians living abroad are law-abiding and good ambassadors. She urged Ghanaians to identify and sanction offenders individually rather than tarring all Nigerians with the same brush. She also dismissed claims of attacks on Nigerian businesses in Ghana, urging restraint and vigilance.
