LAGOS ACHIEVES 57.4% EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING RATE, TARGETS EARLY INITIATION BOOST

Lagos State has surpassed the global benchmark for exclusive breastfeeding, recording a rate of 57.4%, according to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi. Speaking at the 2025 World Breastfeeding Week press briefing, Ogunyemi noted the state is working to improve early initiation rates, currently at 14%, by training health workers and tackling misinformation.

She highlighted Lagos’ six-month paid maternity leave and two-week paternity leave policy, urging private sector adoption. Officials stressed that breastfeeding is critical for child survival, development, and maternal health, calling for stronger workplace and community support systems.

The government reaffirmed partnerships with global organizations to strengthen breastfeeding practices, with month-long activities planned to raise awareness and eliminate barriers.

Police Probe KWAM 1 Over Alleged Disruption of Flight at Abuja Airport

The Nigeria Police Force has launched an investigation into Fuji music icon, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, following allegations of unruly behaviour that reportedly obstructed the safe operation of an aircraft at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Tuesday that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had formally petitioned the police over the August 5, 2025 incident, citing violations of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, 2023.

Following the petition, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, directed the Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, to carry out a thorough investigation to determine the facts of the case and ensure due process.

Aviation Minister Orders Sanctions Over Leaked Indecent Video of Ibom Air Passenger

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has directed disciplinary action against Ibom Air staff implicated in the leak of an indecent video involving Ms. Comfort Emmanson, the passenger accused of assaulting airline officials.

In a statement on Monday via his X account, Keyamo condemned the public circulation of the viral footage, which showed Ms. Emmanson’s torn top exposing her upper body. He described the act as “totally unacceptable” and “debas[ing] of womanhood,” stressing that the individual responsible must be “singled out and adequately sanctioned.”

The incident took place on August 10, 2025, aboard Ibom Air Flight Q153 from Uyo to Lagos. According to the airline, the altercation began after Ms. Emmanson allegedly refused to switch off her phone during take-off, in violation of international aviation regulations. The situation reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation with both the flight crew and ground staff.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has since imposed an indefinite ban on Ms. Emmanson from both local and international flights. She was arraigned before the Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Monday and remanded at Kirikiri Correctional Centre after failing to meet bail conditions.

While acknowledging that recording such incidents may be necessary for legal purposes, Keyamo maintained that releasing the footage in a manner that humiliates individuals is unacceptable. He also directed airlines to strengthen staff training in conflict management and vowed stricter enforcement of penalties for passengers who violate aviation safety rules.

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has imposed a lifetime no-fly ban on a passenger of Ibom Air over alleged unruly conduct on board.

According to the association, the sanction applies to both domestic and international flights operated by all member airlines. The decision, AON says, is part of efforts to curb disruptive behaviour in the aviation sector and ensure the safety and comfort of crew and passengers.
