THE ENGINEER SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH

CHAPTER 5 — THE PROMISE THAT NEVER CAME

After Daniel left for Lagos, Cynthia waited for him every day.

Every morning, she would wake up and look at the road.

Every evening, she would sit under the mango tree where they used to talk.

She believed he would return.

"He promised me," she would always tell herself.

Days passed.

Weeks passed.

Months passed.

But Daniel never came back.

At first, he answered a few of her calls.

Then suddenly, his number stopped going through.

Whenever she called, she heard the same thing.

"The number you are trying to call is unavailable."

Cynthia kept trying.

Again.

And again.

And again.

But nothing worked.

One morning, Cynthia woke up feeling sick.

Her mother noticed it.

"Cynthia, are you okay?"

"I don't know, Mama."

A few weeks later, the truth came out.

Cynthia was pregnant.

The news hit her like thunder.

She sat alone in her room and cried.

She wished Daniel was there.

She wished he could hold her hand.

She wished he could explain why he had disappeared.

But Daniel was nowhere to be found.

Months later, Cynthia gave birth to a beautiful baby boy.

She named him David.

The little boy looked so much like his father.

Whenever Cynthia looked at him, she remembered Daniel.

The man she loved.

The man who promised to come back.

The man who never returned.

Two years passed.

David grew into a cheerful little boy.

He loved running around the compound and calling for his mother.

But life was becoming harder.

Money was not enough.

Cynthia knew she had to do something.

One evening, she sat with her mother outside the house.

"Mama, I want to go to Lagos."

Her mother looked surprised.

"Lagos?"

"Yes."

"I need a better life for David."

Her mother was silent.

Then she nodded slowly.

"You are a strong woman, Cynthia."

Tears filled Cynthia's eyes.

"I'll leave David with you until I find my feet."

Her mother held her hand.

"Don't worry. I'll take care of him."

A few days later, Cynthia traveled to Lagos.

It was her first time in such a big city.

The roads were busy.

The buildings were tall.

Everything looked different.

Luckily, her childhood friend, Amaka, welcomed her.

"You can stay with me until you find a job," Amaka said.

Cynthia hugged her tightly.

"Thank you."

Days turned into weeks.

Every morning, Cynthia left the house looking for work.

Sometimes she returned tired.

Sometimes she returned disappointed.

But she never gave up.

Then one afternoon, something happened.

Something that made her heart stop.

Cynthia was standing near a shopping plaza when she saw a black SUV pull up.

The driver opened the doorA man stepped out.

Cynthia froze.

Her heart began to pound.

Her hands started shaking.

"No..." she whispered.

"It can't be."

The man turned around.

It was Daniel.

Older.

Richer.

But it was Daniel.

Before Cynthia could move, a beautiful woman stepped out of the car.

Then a little girl followed her.

The little girl quickly ran into Daniel's arms.

"Daddy!"

Daniel laughed and carried her.

The woman smiled.

They looked like a happy family.

Cynthia's eyes widened.

She felt confused.

She felt lost.

She felt like the ground had disappeared beneath her feet.

"Daniel..." she whispered.

She wanted to run to him.

She wanted answers.

She wanted the truth.

But before she could move, Daniel entered the car.

A few seconds later, the SUV drove away.

Cynthia stood there like a statue.
Tears rolled down her cheeks.

That night, she returned to Amaka's house quietly.

Amaka immediately noticed something was wrong.

"What happened?"

Cynthia told her everything.

From the day she met Daniel in Nnewi.

To the promise he made.

To the child he left behind.

To seeing him that afternoon.

Amaka listened carefully.

Then she sighed.

"Cynthia, forget him."

Cynthia looked at her.

"He has forgotten you."

"No," Cynthia replied immediately.

"Yes, he has."

Cynthia shook her head.

"You don't understand"What don't you understand?"

"I never knew the truth."

Amaka frowned.

"What truth?"

Cynthia looked down.

"I never knew Daniel had a wife."

The room became silent.

For the first time, Cynthia began to wonder if the love she had waited for all these years was nothing but a lie.

And somewhere in Lagos...

Daniel was sitting in his living room with his wife and daughter.

Completely unaware that the woman he left behind in Nnewi was now living in the same city.

A nd that fate was about to bring them face to face again.

THE ENGINEER SHE FELL LOVE WITH
CHAPTER 4 —

Cynthia was happier than she had ever been.

Every evening, she sat with Daniel under the mango tree near his house.

They talked.

They laughed.

They shared stories.

And with each passing day, Cynthia loved him more.

One evening, Daniel looked unusually quiet.

He was not smiling like before.

He kept staring at the ground.

Cynthia noticed immediately.

“Daniel, what is wrong?” she asked.

Daniel took a deep breath.

“There is something I need to tell you.”

Cynthia's heart started beating fast.

“What is it?”

Daniel looked at her.

“I have to travel to Lagos.”

The smile on Cynthia's face disappeared immediately.

“Travel?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Maybe a few weeks.”

Cynthia felt like somebody had poured cold water on her.

“A few weeks?” she whispered.

Daniel nodded again.

“I have some important business to take care of.”

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The night suddenly felt colder.

The lantern beside them flickered quietly.

Then Cynthia's eyes filled with tears.

“Are you leaving me?”

Daniel looked away.
“No.”

“But you're going.”

“I have to.”

Cynthia wiped her tears.

“I thought you loved me.”

Daniel felt a sharp pain in his chest.

The words hit him hard.

Because part of him truly cared about her.

But he was hiding a dangerous secret.

He reached for her hand.

“Cynthia, listen to me.”

She looked at him.

“I do love you.”

Cynthia's eyes brightened a little.

“Then why are you leaving?”

Daniel forced a smile.

“Because I need to settle some things first.”

“Will you come back?”

Daniel squeezed her hand.

“Yes.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

“You're not lying to me?”

Daniel's heart skipped.

For a few seconds, he could not answer.

Then he nodded slowly.

“No. I'm not lying.”

Cynthia smiled through her tears.

“Then I'll wait for you.”

Daniel looked away again.

The guilt inside him was growing every day.

But Cynthia trusted him completely.

That night, she went home and told her mother.

“Mama, Daniel is traveling to Lagos.”

Her mother stopped cooking and looked at her.

“Lagos?”

“Yes.”
“When is he coming back?”

“He promised he would return for me.”

Her mother stared at her quietly.

Something about the whole thing did not feel right.

But seeing the happiness in her daughter's eyes, she kept her worries to herself.

The next morning, the whole village gathered to say goodbye to the engineers.

The road project was almost finished.

Workers loaded bags into trucks.

People waved happily.

Cynthia stood beside Daniel, holding back tears.

Daniel carried only one small bag.

Before entering the vehicle, he turned to Cynthia.

“I'll be back.”

Cynthia nodded.

“I'll be waiting.”

Daniel smiled.

Then the vehicle started moving.

Slowly.

Slowly.

Until it disappeared from sight.

Cynthia stood there long after everyone had gone home.

She kept staring at the road.

Hoping he would come back quickly.

But far away in Lagos...

A little girl ran out of a house the moment she saw a taxi stop outside.

“Daddy!”

She jumped into Daniel's arms.

Daniel hugged her tightly.
Then a beautiful woman stepped out of the doorway.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Welcome home,” she said softly.

Daniel looked at his wife and daughter.

The family he had hidden from Cynthia.

The family waiting for him all this time.

And at that moment, Daniel knew one thing.

The lie he had built in Nnewi was about to destroy someone's heart.

CHAPTER 3 — LOVE WAS GROWING

Cynthia was now the happiest girl in Nnewi.

Everywhere she went, people noticed the smile on her face.

Even old Mama Ifeoma from the next compound laughed one morning and said,

“Cynthia, your teeth are shining too much these days.

Tell us the secret.”

Cynthia covered her face shyly and ran away laughing.

The truth was simple.

She was deeply in love with Engineer Daniel.

Every day after the market closed, Cynthia would go to Daniel’s house.

She cooked for him.

She swept his room.

She washed his plates carefully.

Sometimes she even stayed late just to hear him talk.

Daniel also enjoyed her company.

He liked the way Cynthia laughed.

He liked the way she cared for him.

And slowly, he became used to her presence.

One evening, Daniel returned from work looking very tired.

His clothes were dusty, and sweat covered his face.

Cynthia quickly brought water for him.

“You look stressed,” she said softly.

Daniel sighed deeply. “Today was hard.”

Cynthia disappeared into the kitchen and came back with hot food.

Rice and stew.

Daniel looked surprised.

“You cooked all this?”

Cynthia smiled proudly. “Yes.”

Daniel tasted the food slowly.

Then he smiled.

“This is the best food I’ve eaten in a long time.”

Cynthia’s heart danced with joy.

Nobody had ever praised her like that before.

That night, they sat outside together under the moon.

The village was quiet.

Only the sound of crickets filled the air.

Daniel looked at Cynthia for a long time.

“You really care about me,” he said quietly.

Cynthia smiled.

“I just want you to be happy.”

Daniel looked away immediately.

For a moment, guilt filled his heart.

But Cynthia did not notice.

She was too busy dreaming about love.

Suddenly, Daniel’s phone started ringing.

He quickly stood up and moved far away before answering the call.

Cynthia watched him carefully.

His face changed immediately.

His soft smile disappeared.

“Yes… I understand,” he said quietly on the phone.

A woman’s voice could be heard faintly from the phone, but Cynthia could not hear the words clearly.

Daniel looked worried.

After the call ended, he returned slowly.
“Who was that?” Cynthia asked.

Daniel forced a smile.

“My office manager.”

Cynthia nodded slowly.

But something inside her heart felt strange for the first time.

Still, she ignored it.

Love had already covered her eyes.

The next day, Cynthia followed Daniel to the river side where the workers were repairing the road.

The workers joked with her immediately.

“Engineer’s wife has come!” one of them laughed.

Cynthia blushed deeply.

Daniel laughed softly too, but he said nothing.

That small moment gave Cynthia hope.
Big hope.

That night, she lay on her bed smiling at the ceiling.

She imagined herself wearing a white wedding dress.

She imagined Daniel holding her hand in church.

She imagined leaving the village with him and starting a new life in the city.

But far away in the city…

A woman sat alone beside a window, holding her phone tightly.

Tears filled her eyes as she whispered,
“Daniel… when are you coming home to us?”

Beside her sat a little girl sleeping peacefully on the couch.

The same little girl Cynthia saw in the picture.

End of chapter 3

“She gave him her heart … not knowing another woman already owned his name.”

CHAPTER 2 — CYNTHIA’S NEW HAPPINESS

After the day Cynthia met Engineer Daniel, her life changed slowly.

Every morning, she woke up earlier than before.

She would sweep the compound very well, bathe quickly, and wear her best dress before going to the market.

Even her mother noticed it.

“One person is shining like morning sun these days,” her mother teased.

Cynthia smiled shyly.

“Mama, leave me alone.”

But deep inside her heart, she knew the truth.

She wanted to see Daniel again.

And luckily for her, Daniel always found a reason to see her too.

Sometimes he would buy roasted corn from her.

Sometimes he would stop by her mother’s vegetable stand just to greet her.

And anytime he smiled at her, Cynthia felt butterflies inside her stomach.

One evening, heavy rain started falling in the village.

The market became empty quickly.

People ran home with their goods.

Cynthia stood under a small shop, hugging herself because of the cold.

Then suddenly, a black umbrella covered her head.

She turned quickly.

It was Daniel.

“You will get sick standing here,” he said softly.

Cynthia’s heart skipped.

“I’m waiting for the rain to stop,” she answered quietly.

Daniel looked at her basket.

“You haven’t sold everything?”
“No.”

Without saying another word, Daniel brought out money and paid for all the remaining vegetables.

Cynthia’s eyes widened.

“But this is too much—”
“Keep it,” he smiled.

“You work very hard.”

Cynthia could not believe it.

Nobody had ever treated her that way before.

As they walked together under the umbrella, villagers stared at them.

Some women even smiled knowingly.

Cynthia’s cheeks turned red with happiness.

When they reached her house, Daniel looked at her for a few seconds.

“You are different from other girls,” he said.

Cynthia looked down shyly.

That night, she could not eat well.

She kept smiling alone.

Even little Emeka noticed.

“Cynthia is in love!” he shouted jokingly.

“Shut up!” Cynthia laughed, throwing a

pillow at him.

Days passed.

Cynthia started helping Daniel more often.

She cooked for him.

She washed his clothes.

She cleaned the small house the company rented for him near the village square.

Daniel never stopped her.

Instead, he thanked her with sweet words that made her love him more.

One afternoon, Cynthia entered his room to arrange the bed.

As she folded his clothes carefully, a picture fell from the table.

Cynthia picked it up slowly.

It was the picture of a beautiful woman carrying a little girl.

Cynthia frowned.

Before she could think too much, Daniel entered quickly and collected the picture from her hand.

For the first time, Cynthia noticed fear in his eyes.

“Who is she?” Cynthia asked quietly.
Daniel forced a smile.

“My sister,” he answered fast.

“And the child?”

“My niece.”

Cynthia smiled again, feeling relieved.

“Oh… she’s very beautiful.”

Daniel nodded slowly, but his face became serious.

That night, while Cynthia slept peacefully with love in her heart…

Daniel sat alone in his room, staring at the same picture.

Then he whispered quietly,

“Forgive me.”

THE ENGINEER SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH

CHAPTER 1 — THE MAN WHO CAME TO NNEWI VILLAGE

Cynthia was the kind of girl everybody loved in Nnewi.

She was beautiful, gentle, and always smiling.

She sold vegetables with her mother in the small market near the village square.

Even when life was hard, Cynthia still found a way to laugh.

Every morning, she would carry a basket of tomatoes on her head and walk to the market while singing softly.

“Cynthia!” her little brother, Emeka, shouted one morning.

“Mama said you should come back early today.”

“Why?” Cynthia asked.

“They said some big men from the city are coming to the village.”

Cynthia laughed. “Big men again? Maybe they are politicians.”

“No,” Emeka said excitedly.

“Mama said they are engineers.

They want to repair the bad road near the river.”

Cynthia did not care much about roads or engineers.

She only wanted to sell her vegetables and help her mother.

But that afternoon, everything changed.

A long white truck entered the village. Children ran after it happily.

Dust filled the air as the truck stopped near the old community hall.

Men wearing helmets came down from the truck.

Then Cynthia saw him.

Tall.

Handsome.

Clean white shirt.

Dark sunglasses.

He looked different from every man Cynthia had ever seen in the village.

The young man removed his glasses slowly and smiled at the villagers.

“My name is Engineer Daniel,” he said politely. “We are here to work on the road project.”

Cynthia could not stop looking at him.
For the first time in her life, her heart beat fast for someone.

That evening, while she cooked soup with her mother, she kept thinking about him.

“Why are you smiling alone?” her mother asked.

Cynthia quickly faced the pot.

“Nothing, Mama.”

Her mother laughed softly.

“Hmm… I know that kind of smile.”

The next morning, Cynthia went to fetch water from the stream.

As she returned, she saw Engineer Daniel standing near the road, looking confused.

He stopped her politely.

“Please,” he said.

“Can you help me? I’m looking for Mama Ngozi’s compound.”

Cynthia almost dropped her bucket.
His voice was calm and sweet.

“Yes… yes, I know the place,” she answered shyly.

“Can you show me?”
Cynthia nodded quickly.

As they walked together, her heart danced like drums at a village wedding.

Daniel smiled at her.

“What’s your name?”

“Cynthia.”

“That’s a beautiful name.”

Cynthia looked down immediately, trying to hide her smile.

Nobody had ever called her name like that before.

When they reached the compound, Daniel thanked her.

But before leaving, he said something that made Cynthia’s heart melt.

“I hope we become friends.”

That night, Cynthia could not sleep.

She kept hearing his voice in her head.

“I hope we become friends.”

Little did Cynthia know…

The man she was slowly falling in love with already had a wife and a little daughter waiting for him in the city.

And the love she was about to give him would one day break her heart into pieces.

“He came to build a road in her village… but destroyed the heart she gave him.”

THE END OF THE STORY

THE GIRL WHO CARRIED HER FAMILY – CHAPTER SIX (FINAL CHAPTER)

That night felt different.

After Amara told her mother the good news, the small room was no longer full of fear… it was full of joy.

Her mother smiled in a way Amara had not seen in a long time.

“Are you serious?” her mother asked again, her eyes shining.

Amara nodded, laughing through happy tears. “Yes, Mama.

They said they will help us. Everything will change.”

Her little brother jumped up.

“Does that mean I will go back to school?”

“Yes!” Amara said, pulling him close.
Her little sister clapped her hands.

“And Mama will be fine?”

Amara looked at her mother and held her hand.

“Yes… Mama will be fine.”

For the first time in many days, they laughed together.

Even in that small house, with the leaking roof and cracked walls…

happiness filled every corner.

They talked, they smiled, they even tried to dance a little.

It was not a big celebration.

But it was real.

That night, they did not cry.

They slept with smiles.

The next morning, people came.

The same kind woman came with Them .

They came with a car.

Amara helped her mother outside carefully.

“Don’t worry,” one of them said gently.

“We will take good care of her.”

Amara held her mother’s hand tightly.

“Mama, you will be fine. I will be waiting.”

Her mother smiled.

“I will come back strong.”

They took her to the hospital.

Days passed.

Then weeks.

The surgery was done… far away, in another country.

Amara stayed strong.

She prayed every day.

Then one day...
The call came.

“The surgery was successful.”

Amara dropped the phone and cried.

But this time… it was not pain.

It was joy.

After some time, her mother came back.

Stronger.

Healthier.

Smiling.

Amara ran into her arms.

“Mama!” she cried.

“My daughter,” her mother said, holding her tight.

They did not want to let go.

Her siblings joined, hugging her too.

It was a moment they would never forget.

Life began to change.

Her siblings went back to school.

Every morning, they wore clean uniforms and smiled as they left.

Amara would stand and watch them, her heart full.

“You will be great,” she told them.
Then something bigger happened.

The people who helped them gave them a new house.

A good house.

With strong walls.

No leaking roof.

Amara walked inside slowly, touching everything like she was dreaming.

“Mama… is this really ours?” she asked.
Her mother smiled.

“Yes… this is our home now.”

Amara sat down and cried again.

But these tears were soft.

Peaceful.

They also helped her mother start a

good business.

A big one.

Her mother worked, but now with strength and joy.

No more suffering.

No more fear.

And Amara…

Amara stopped hawking.

She went back to school.

The first day she wore her uniform again, she looked at herself and smiled.

“I made it,” she whispered.

One evening, they all sat outside their new house.

The sun was setting.

The air was calm.

They were happy.

But then her mother spoke softly.

“I wish your father was here to see this…”

Everyone became quiet.

Amara looked up at the sky.

“He can see us,” she said gently.

“He knows we are okay.”

Her mother nodded, with tears in her eyes.

“Yes… he knows.”

Amara looked around at her family.

Her mother, now strong.

Her siblings, now laughing.

Her home, now safe.

And she smiled.

She was no longer just the girl who carried her family.

Now…

She was the girl who helped her family rise.

And this time.

They were not falling again.

THE GIRL WHO CARRIED HER FAMILY – CHAPTER 5
“For the first time, her pain had a voice… and the world finally listened.”

“She carried her silence for years… until one day, it broke into tears and truth.”

“The strongest girl finally spoke—and in her voice, a family found hope.”

“She wasn’t just telling a story… she was releasing years of pain.”

“The day she spoke was the day her
healing began.”

THE STORY CONTINUED

That evening, the sky was painted in soft shades of orange and gold—the kind of beauty Amara rarely had time to notice.

But today… something was different.
She walked slowly along the dusty path, her tray lighter than usual, but her heart strangely full.

The words of the woman kept echoing in her mind.

“They help children like you…”

Amara had followed her earlier that day.

Not because she fully believed… but because something inside her needed to try.

The place wasn’t big.

Just a quiet compound with a few plastic chairs and people gathered under a small shade.

Women.

Children.

Stories.
So many stories.

At first, Amara stood at the edge, unsure.

Watching.

Listening.

Until someone noticed her.

“Come, don’t be afraid,” a gentle voice said.
And slowly… she stepped in.

They asked her simple questions at first.

Her name.

Her age.

But then came the one question she wasn’t ready for.

“What is your story?”

Amara froze.

Her lips parted, but no words came out.

Because how do you explain pain that has lived with you for so long… it feels normal?

She swallowed hard.

“I…” her voice cracked.

And then… it all came out.

She spoke about her mother’s illness…

her father’s absence… the hunger… the long days under the sun… the nights filled with fear.

Her voice trembled.

Her hands shook.

But she didn’t stop.

Because for the first time… someone was truly listening.

Tears rolled down her cheeks, but she didn’t wipe them.

“I’m tired…” she whispered at the end.

“I’m trying to be strong, but… I’m tired.”
Silence filled the space.

Not the kind of silence that ignores you.

But the kind that holds you.

One of the women moved closer and wrapped her arms around Amara gently.

“You don’t have to carry everything alone anymore,” she said softly.

And that was it.

The moment Amara broke.

She cried—not quietly this time—but deeply, painfully… like a child who had been strong for too long.

And no one stopped her.

Because sometimes… crying is the beginning of healing.

Before she left, they spoke to her again.

They told her they would help.

That her mother could receive treatment.

That she might return to school.

Hope.

Real hope.

Not the kind she forced herself to believe.

But the kind that felt… possible.
Now, as she approached her home, her steps quickened.

“Mama!” she called out as she pushed the door open.

Her mother turned weakly from where she lay.

“Amara… you’re back…”

Amara rushed to her side, kneeling down, holding her hand tightly.

“Mama,” she said, her voice shaking—but this time, not from fear.

“Something happened today.”

Her mother looked at her, worried.

“What is it?”

Amara took a deep breath.

“I met someone… a kind woman.

She took me to a place… they help people like us.

Mama, they said they can help you…

they can help us.”

Her mother stared at her, as if trying to understand.

“Help… us?” she repeated faintly.

Amara nodded quickly, tears already forming again.

“Yes, Mama. They said you can get treatment.

They said… I can even go back to school.”

The room fell silent.

For a moment, her mother said nothing.

Then slowly… tears slipped from the corners of her eyes.

“My daughter…” she whispered, her voice breaking.

“You have suffered so much…”

Amara shook her head, holding her tighter.

“No, Mama… it’s not over anymore.”

Her little siblings gathered around, confused but drawn by the emotion in the room.

“Are we going to be okay?” Chinedu asked quietly.

Amara looked at him… then at her mother… then back at him.

And for the first time—

She answered without fear.

“Yes,” she said softly.

“We are.”

That night, the house was still small.

The roof still leaked.

Nothing had physically changed.

But something inside them had.

For the first time in a long while…
They slept with hope.

And Amara, the girl who had carried her family alone for so long…

Finally began to feel what it meant—

To be carried too.
