💥Daniella was unveiled as the best graduating student of Nursing during the Induction of 61 Nurses into the The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) earlier today. Here’s what she told us

‘I feel honored to be recognized here today, because having to be disciplined never comes easy. I want to urge people out there not to oversleep at night, don’t eat too much, you need self control while trying to achieve your goals. You also have to make sacrifices in education in general because you can’t always have it all.

‘Japa’ was also part of my inspiration because Nursing is very much demanded everywhere on the globe currently’

*💥ASUU may or not embark on indefinite strike*

Barring a last-minute change, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may or not declare an indefinite strike over Federal Government’s failure to meet its demands.
Meanwhile, the Nation gathered yesterday that most of the over 123 branches of the union have completed their congresses. Others are expected to round off theirs today.
And ASUU leader, who declined to be named, said a proposal for the indefinite strike would be ratified and adopted at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of ASUU scheduled for Sunday.

💥ASUU denies receiving N100b from govt

THE Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Abuja branch, has said contrary to the claim by the federal government, the union did not receive N100 billion from the federal government.

The union blamed the government for its ongoing strike, saying it frustrated all genuine efforts it had made to end the industrial action.

The University of Abuja branch chairman, Dr Kassim Umaru, speaking Tuesday, during the union’s congress at the University’s Mini Campus in Gwagwalada, said “the congress deliberated on issues around the strike and vehemently rejected the offer presented by the federal government.

Reacting to the reports that the federal government has approved another N100 billion for the university unions as part of the 2009 agreement, Umaru said “all these being said in social media and newspapers are not true.”

FG TO APPROACH NATIONAL INDUSTRIAL COURT OR BAN ASUU OVER INSISTANCE ON STRIKE

Indications emerged yesterday that the Federal Government may consider the option of proscribing the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU if it fails to call off the prolonged strike after an offer was made to it.

The Federal Government has also approved an additional N100 billion for the university sector as part of the understanding in the re-negotiation of the 2009 Agreement.

Besides, N50 billion was equally approved to be shared by the university-based unions as earned allowances.

Multiple sources in the Presidency and the Ministry of Education has said that if ASUU refused to reciprocate the Federal Government’s gesture by calling off the strike, the government would consider the option of prescribing the union.

One of the sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “Because of the priority President Muhammadu Buhari has paid to education, he has approved additional N100 billion for the universities and about N57 billion for the Polytechnics and Colleges of Education.

“This is part of the understanding with the unions on the re-negotiation of the 2009 Agreement. The government has also approved 35 per cent increase in salary for professors and 23.5 per cent increase for other lecturers. Government also approved N50 billion for earned allowances for the striking unions.

“It will be unpatrotic on the side of ASUU not to reciprocate the government gesture and call off the strike for our children to go back to school. The government is not also unmindful of the cooperation of SSANU and NASU for being patriotic.

“It is part of the labour laws that the unions, especially ASUU, should apply cessation of strike once a trade dispute is apprehended and conciliation is ongoing.

2023 election results will be collated manually –INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission has said the collation of results of the 2023 general elections will be done manually despite the adoption of electronic transmission of results.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, stressed that the commission would transmit results from polling units to its result-viewing portal, IReV, as witnessed in recent elections, but that the Electoral Act was clear on how collation should be done.

Okoye said in an interview with our correspondent on Saturday, “There is a marked difference between the transfer/transmission of results and the collation of results. Section 50(2) of the Electoral Act, 2022 gives the commission the absolute discretion to determine the mode and procedure of voting in an election and the transmission of election results.

“Sections 60 and 62 of the Electoral Act govern post-election procedure and collation of election results. Section 60(1) of the Act provides that the presiding officer shall, after counting the votes at a polling unit, enter the votes scored by each candidate in a form to be prescribed by the commission.

An injunction against the people
“Section 60(5) of the Act makes it mandatory that the presiding officer shall transfer the results, including total number of accredited voters and the results of the ballot in a manner prescribed by the commission. Thereafter, the presiding officer shall after recording and announcing the results deliver the same along with election materials under security and accompanied by the candidates or their polling agents, where available to such person as may be prescribed by the commission.

“The implication of this is that the collation process of results is still essentially manual, but the collation officer must collate subject to his verification and confirmation that the number of accredited voters stated.
