Chapter 39: THE BETRAYAL
The Original Contract
Michael stared at Daniel.
"You have the contract?"
Daniel slowly pulled the document from his jacket.
"Let my mother go."
Michael tightened his grip on Grace.
"Give it to me."
Samuel stepped forward.
"Don't, Daniel."
Michael raised the gun.
"One more step and she dies."
Daniel held up the contract.
"Then read it."
Michael snatched it from his hand.
His eyes moved across the first page.
Then stopped.
His expression changed.
"What is this?"
Daniel looked at Samuel.
"What does it say?"
Samuel answered quietly.
"The company doesn't belong to Michael."
Daniel looked at the contract.
"It belongs to..."
Samuel nodded.
"Daniel."
Michael's face twisted with rage.
"No."
The contract contained one final clause:
Upon Daniel Sterling's twenty-fifth birthday, ownership of Sterling Holdings shall transfer completely to him.
Michael looked at Daniel.
"You knew?"
"No."
Daniel shook his head.
"My grandfather never told me."
Michael suddenly laughed.
"You think this changes anything?"
He tore the contract in half.
Samuel shouted,
"Michael!"
But Daniel smiled.
"You just made your biggest mistake."
Michael froze.
Daniel pointed toward the chapel ceiling.
A tiny camera was blinking.
"The whole thing was recorded."
Sirens suddenly echoed outside.
Michael looked toward the doors.
Police surrounded the chapel.
Grace was pulled away from him.
Michael dropped the gun.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Samuel walked toward Daniel.
"It's over."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
He looked at the torn contract.
"Not yet."
Because the final page was missing.
And Michael had it.
