Definition of a Keyboard

A keyboard is an input device that allows the user to enter letters, numbers, symbols, and commands into the computer. It is one of the most common tools used to communicate with the computer.

Main Functions of a Keyboard

1. Typing

Used to type letters (A–Z)

Type numbers (0–9)

Enter symbols like @, #, &, ?, etc.

2. Giving Commands

Special keys such as Enter, Shift, Ctrl, and Alt help the user perform different operations on the computer.

3. Editing Work

Backspace deletes characters to the left.

Delete removes characters to the right.

Insert switches between typing modes.

4. Navigation

Arrow keys move the cursor up, down, left, and right.

Home and End move to the beginning or end of a line.

Page Up/Page Down move quickly through long documents.

5. Using Shortcuts

Shortcut combinations help speed up work, e.g.

Ctrl + C = Copy

Ctrl + V = Paste

Ctrl + S = Save

6. Function Keys (F1–F12)

Perform quick tasks such as:

F1 – Help

F5 – Refresh

F12 – Save As (in some programs)

Based on the definition we talked about yesterday, the computer performs three major functions and they includes
1. It accepts data through the input device
2. It processes the data through the processing unit and
3. It gives out results through the output unit (the information)

The computer system has 3 major parts: they are,:
1. The visual display unit (VDU)
2. The control processing Unit (CPU)
3. The keyboard

Apart from the major parts of the system, there are other parts known as the Mainor part which is used to send (inputs) and retrieve (output) information. The input units are used to send or enter data into the computer and they include, the mouse, light pen, scanner, joystick e.t.c

The output unit is used to bring out information from the CS and they include , the printer, the speaker e.t.c
