SONG 30 My Father, My God and Friend

“Drawing Near to God Is Good” for Us!

“As for me, drawing near to God is good for me.”—PS. 73:28.

FOCUS: How we can draw closer to Jehovah and the benefits that come from doing so.

1-2. (a) What effort is required to cultivate a close friendship with someone? (b) What will we discuss in this article?

Having a good friend takes time and effort. It involves spending time with that person, learning about their experiences, and learning what they like and dislike. It also means observing their admirable qualities and, over time, developing a deep affection for them.

1, 2. b) What will we see in this article?

In this article, we'll look at how we can grow closer to Jehovah, our best friend. But first, let's talk about why it's good to do so.

3. Why should we meditate on the benefits of drawing close to Jehovah? Give an example.

We should meditate on the benefits of drawing closer to Jehovah because this motivates us to strengthen our relationship with Him.

For example, although many people know that eating healthy, exercising, and getting enough rest are good for them, they often neglect them. However, those who regularly reflect on the benefits of these habits are more likely to maintain them.

Similarly, thinking about how to draw closer to Jehovah gives us peace, strength, and happiness. It motivates us to dedicate time and effort to cultivating our friendship with Him.

4. What did the psalmist express in Psalm 73:28?

As a Levite and temple musician, he recognized, after years of faithful service, the importance of maintaining a close relationship with Jehovah and wanted others to appreciate the benefits of this friendship as well.

GETTING CLOSER TO GOD MAKES US HAPPY

5. (a) Why does it make us happy to draw near to Jehovah?

Drawing close to Jehovah makes us happy because when we follow the wise counsel he gives us in his Word, we thrive in life. His guidance leads us to positive results and greater satisfaction.

5. b) In what ways does Jehovah’s wisdom help and protect you? (Proverbs 2:6-16)

The wisdom of Jehovah, according to Proverbs 2:6-16, helps and protects me by giving me discernment to avoid bad influences and not make serious mistakes.

It guides me in making right decisions, protects me from wicked paths and people who promote immorality or dishonesty, and enables me to live righteously, which brings me peace and spiritual security.

6. Why did the psalmist lose his joy?

The psalmist lost his joy because he felt frustrated and bitter at the thought that the wicked, who did not respect Jehovah or his standards, had an easier life, being rich, healthy, and without suffering.

This misperception led him to envy them and question whether it was worth keeping his heart pure and serving Jehovah, which plunged him into sadness and doubt.

7. How can we regain joy when we go through a period of sadness? (See also the image.)

When we are sad, we can regain joy by drawing closer to Jehovah through prayer, studying His Word, and congregation. Just as the psalmist sought God's guidance in His sanctuary, we too receive comfort and strength to carry on.

ILLUSTRATION

A Levite, standing between the copper altar and the temple porch.

The Levite who wrote Psalm 73, “in the magnificent sanctuary of God.” (See paragraph 7.)

Getting closer to God gives us a full life and hope.

8. In what other ways does drawing closer to God benefit us?

Drawing close to God benefits us in two important ways: It gives us a full life, meaning it gives meaning and purpose to our existence, and it gives us firm hope for the future, as Jeremiah 29:11 promises.

9. Why does drawing close to Jehovah give meaning to our lives?

Drawing close to Jehovah gives true meaning to our lives, because we know that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

Unlike those who deny the existence of God and feel that life lacks purpose, by worshipping and serving Him we satisfy the spiritual need with which we were created, and that gives us a full and happy life.

10. According to Psalm 37:29, What future awaits those who trust in Jehovah?

For those who trust in Jehovah, the wonderful hope of living forever on an earth transformed into a paradise awaits us. We know that Jehovah will fulfill his promise that the righteous will possess the earth and live there forever, as Psalm 37:29 says.

11. How does it benefit us to draw closer to God, and how does he feel when we do so?

Drawing close to God benefits us in many ways. For example, He promises to forgive our sins if we repent, which frees us from the burden of guilt and gives us peace of mind.

Furthermore, by seeking Him and living according to His standards, we bring joy to Jehovah's heart, which fills us with satisfaction and strengthens our relationship with Him.

WHAT TO DO TO GET CLOSER TO GOD

12. What should you do to get closer to God?

To grow ever closer to God, we must continue to learn about Him and His Son, strengthen our faith, repent of our mistakes, and strive to obey His standards. In this way, we keep our friendship with Jehovah alive and strong.

13. What three things will help us draw ever closer to Jehovah?

1. Read and study the Bible deeply: We must continue to study God's Word, not only to know the basics, but to understand His will and live according to His principles.

2. Strengthen Faith: Meditating on Jehovah's Love. Reflecting on the evidence of Jehovah's love for us strengthens our faith and motivates us to stay close to Him.

3. Hate what offends Jehovah: We must reject things that displease God and avoid friendships with people who practice them.

14. What can we do in our daily lives to please Jehovah? (1 Corinthians 10:31; see also the pictures.)

In our daily lives, we can please Jehovah by being honest, generous, and responsibly caring for our health. Even in small ways, such as the way we eat or treat others, we show that we want to do what pleases Him.

ILLUSTRATION

Pictures of things we can do to please Jehovah. 1. Drive safely: A brother driving a car stops at a red light. 2. Take care of our bodies: A brother walks briskly through a park. 3. Eat healthy food: A plate with several healthy foods. 4. Be generous: A sister brings flowers and food to an older sister whose arm is immobilized.

Driving safely, taking care of your health with exercise and healthy eating, and being generous with others are some ways to please Jehovah. (See paragraph 14.)

15. How does Jehovah expect us to treat others?

Jehovah expects us to treat others with kindness and respect, without speaking ill of anyone or being confrontational. By being gentle with everyone, we demonstrate humility and reflect his beautiful way of treating people, which brings us closer to him.

WHEN WE ARE WEAK WE CAN ALSO GET CLOSER TO GOD

16. How did the writer of Psalm 73 feel at a certain point in his life?

At one point in his life, the writer of Psalm 73 felt despondent and confused. He came to believe that his efforts to serve Jehovah were pointless and allowed bitterness and negative thoughts to dominate him. He acknowledged that he had nearly strayed, feeling irrational and unworthy of God's love because of his weaknesses and imperfections.

17. a) What did the psalmist appear to have done when he hit rock bottom?

Apparently, when he hit rock bottom, the psalmist decided to turn to Jehovah. He recognized that God had always been with him, holding his hand and guiding him with advice. Instead of remaining trapped in his negative thoughts, he sought refuge in Jehovah, who strengthened him and restored his hope.

17. b) What can we learn from what happened to him? (See also the pictures.)

We learn that when we feel weak or discouraged, it is time to cling more closely to Jehovah. Even if we have stumbled, He is willing to forgive us and help us regain spiritual stability.

ILLUSTRATION

Series of images: 1. A brother who feels discouraged is sitting on a bed. 2. Later, the brother is seen smiling as he arrives at the Kingdom Hall and is greeted by a married couple.

When we are spiritually weak, we should draw closer to Jehovah by devoting more time to our worship. (See paragraph 17.)

LET US DRAW CLOSER TO GOD FOREVER

18. Why is there no limit to our approach to Jehovah?

There are no limits to drawing near to Jehovah because His wisdom and knowledge are unfathomable. There is always more to learn from Him, allowing us to continue strengthening our friendship with God for all eternity.

19. What assurance do these Psalms give us?

These psalms assure us that if we continue to draw close to Jehovah, He will bless us forever. We can trust that He will be our rock and our eternal support, and that we will always have reason to praise Him.

WHAT WOULD YOU ANSWER?

Why should we meditate on the benefits of drawing close to Jehovah?

We should meditate on the benefits of drawing close to Jehovah because this motivates us to strengthen our relationship with Him. As we reflect on how His wisdom, protection, and love enhance our lives, we find more reasons to trust Him and follow His standards.

What are the benefits of drawing closer to God?

Some of the benefits of drawing closer to God include a full and meaningful life, the hope of an eternal future in paradise, forgiveness of our sins, peace of mind, protection from evil influences, and the joy of having a close relationship with our Creator.

What should we do to get closer to God?

To grow closer to God, we must read and study the Bible regularly, delving deeper into His will and applying its principles to our daily lives.

We must also strengthen our faith by meditating on the proofs of His love and continue to hate what He hates, avoiding bad associations.

Furthermore, it is essential to do everything with the desire to please Jehovah, treating others with kindness and living in a way that reflects our love for Him.

Congregational Book Study

June 16-22, 2025, Chapter 27, Answers

Congregational Bible Study (30 mins.) BT chap. 27 pars. 23-26 and boxes on pp. 214, 217.

23, 24. Like Paul, what have many modern-day brothers done when they have been imprisoned for their faith?

Like the Apostle Paul, many brothers in modern times have demonstrated steadfast faith, even in prison. For example, Brother Adolfo in Spain was imprisoned for maintaining his Christian neutrality, but he never lost his joy. Despite being mistreated, he responded with kindness and a smile.

This Christian attitude impressed even his jailers. Over time, his behavior earned him so much trust that his cell remained open, and some soldiers approached him with questions about the Bible. One guard even read the Bible inside his cell, while Adolfo watched from outside.

These examples encourage us to continue speaking God's Word with courage, even in extreme situations. They remind us that loyalty and good example can touch hearts, even in the most difficult places.

25, 26. What prophecy did Paul see fulfilled in less than 30 years, and how have we seen it fulfilled in our day?

Paul saw the fulfillment of the prophecy of Acts 1:8, as in less than 30 years the good news had been preached throughout every creation under heaven. Today we see that same fulfillment worldwide, as the message of the Kingdom is being proclaimed in 240 countries, thanks to the power of the Holy Spirit.

BOX ANALYSIS: PAUL'S LIFE AFTER 61

What facts indicate where Paul traveled and what he accomplished between his first release and his second arrest?

After being acquitted in 61, Paul possibly reached the farthest reaches of the West, probably Spain, and then visited Crete, Macedonia, Nicopolis, and Troas, where he strengthened congregations, appointed elders, and wrote 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus.

How did the actions of Emperor Nero, especially after the fire in Rome in 64, influence the circumstances and outcome of Paul's life?

The fire in Rome in 64 allowed Nero to blame the Christians, unleashing a fierce persecution that changed the favorable judicial climate of Paul's first trial. Under this climate, he was arrested again, imprisoned under harsher conditions, and, around 65, executed by imperial order.

What information from the second letter to Timothy helps us understand Paul's state of mind and the courage of his companions during his final imprisonment?

In 2 Timothy 4:6-8, Paul acknowledges his imminent death and expresses peace and confidence in receiving "the crown of righteousness." By requesting a visit from Timothy and Mark and highlighting the loyalty of Luke and Onesiphorus (2 Timothy 1:16-17; 4:11), we perceive his need for companionship and the noble courage of these brothers, who risked their lives to encourage him.

BOX ANALYSIS: THE GOOD NEWS “HAS BEEN PREACHED IN ALL CREATION”

What did Paul mean when he said that the good news “had been preached in every creature under heaven”?

Paul used general language to indicate that the Kingdom message had already spread widely throughout the known world the interconnected areas of the Roman Empire and surrounding regions without implying literal coverage of the entire planet.

How does the historical overview the expansion of Alexander the Great, the Roman conquests as far as Britain, and trade with the Far East help us measure the scope of the preaching work?

The historical framework shows a unified territory from the borders of India to Britain, and a bustling silk trade from the East; within this network of routes and provinces, the gospel had already reached numerous population centers through the Jews and proselytes of Pentecost, and the apostolic journeys.

Why can we conclude that, despite such a statement, there were still territories not covered, such as Spain, Britain and the Far East?

However, in 56 AD, Paul still considered Spain an “uncovered place,” and when he wrote to the Colossians in 61 AD, he had not yet preached there. There is also no evidence of activity in Britain or the Far East, confirming that Paul’s expression reflected the breadth achieved, not exhaustive coverage.

TREASURES FROM GOD'S WORD, June 16-22, 2025

Talk

Speak Refreshingly to Those Coping With Health Challenges(10 min.)

We all recognize that these times are becoming increasingly difficult, especially when we see how diseases are on the rise every day. Some have been with us for years, for centuries; others are relatively new, and sometimes we don't know how to deal with them.

Some affect the body, but others, on the other hand, affect the mind. Did you know that, according to recent reports, cases of depression and anxiety have increased by more than 25% in recent years worldwide? That represents approximately 300 million people currently suffering from depression.

And this has been a blow not only to healthcare systems and healthcare professionals, but also to millions of families. People who have to care for someone sometimes find their way of acting or thinking confusing. Some of those experiencing these mental health situations don't express it easily, and family members may think it's simply neglect on their part or even a lack of interest in themselves.

But the reality is that these people are struggling inside. You may live with someone who's going through this, or you may be that person.

Therefore, let's reflect on how we can use our words to encourage and comfort those who are emotionally or physically ill. We'll do so through three very valuable biblical tips.

Let's examine this first tip:

When you speak, let yourself be guided by God's wisdom.

LET'S READ PROVERBS 18:4
........

What a beautiful image. Our words can be like a refreshing stream: something that soothes, cleanses, uplifts, and strengthens. But they can also hurt.

Another Bible verse, Proverbs 12:18, says that thoughtless words can be like the blows of a sword. If we put these two verses together, they teach us something: think before you speak.

Let's think about what we say, how we say it, and, above all, how it will be received by the person suffering. The same text from Proverbs 18:4 says that "the fountain of wisdom is a gushing stream."

We recognize that we are not wise and that sometimes we say things without thinking; things that, while we believe they will encourage others, actually crush the person listening.

So that refreshing wisdom does not come from us, but from the knowledge of Jehovah.

When these words come from there, then our words will not be superficial or empty, but will be that stream of which Proverbs speaks, healing, encouraging, life-giving words.

Perhaps we can think of a sick spouse, and every day is a challenge. How important it is that your words not only say "I love you," but convey it with tenderness, patience, and understanding. As Proverbs said, we must remember that our words have the power to hurt or to heal.

Our goal is to encourage and heal those who are going through a difficult situation. This brings us to the second point: to encourage those with health problems with our words:

Try to put yourself in the person's shoes.

LET'S READ PROVERBS 18:13......

And, honestly, how many times have we spoken without really listening? It's worth noting that listening is one of the most powerful ways to show love.

When someone is suffering, whether from a physical, mental, or emotional illness, they often don't need a response from us. All they need is to be heard. Maybe they just want to vent, cry in front of us, or simply feel supported.

But we can also make a mistake: saying things like, "That will pass," or "Others are worse off than you," or even "I understand what you're going through," when perhaps we haven't been through a situation like that ourselves, and we confuse our expressions.

How different it is to say something like, "I don't know what you're going through, but I'm here for you." That sincerity and empathy can touch the heart deeply. Therefore, if possible, to try to understand the situation—why they react the way they do, why they say things the way they do—it's good to do a little research about the illness, whether it's our brother, sister, husband, wife, or a relative's.

When we try to understand what they are experiencing, we can be more accurate in our words, wiser in our comments.

On one occasion, when an older sister was changing things and saying things that weren't true, instead of correcting her, the doctor advised: "If she says it's daytime, tell her it's daytime, even if it's nighttime." Try to show empathy, don't contradict, and don't further damage her mental health.

And it's also important to act by asking the right questions. Instead of saying, "Let me know if I can help you with anything?", it's better to suggest, "Would you like me to go with you to the doctor?" "Shall I help you with the shopping?" As Galatians 6:2 says, we should bear one another's burdens, and in this way we demonstrate true love.

Let's look at the third point to encourage those with health problems with our words:

Be a patient and understanding friend.

LET'S READ PROVERBS 18:24....

In times of illness, a friend who sticks closer than a brother is a blessing from Jehovah. We can be that kind of friend if we put our minds to it. The apostle Paul said in 1 Thessalonians 5:14: “Comfort those who are depressed.”

These distressed brothers and sisters need constant love, emotional support, someone to remember them, to call them, to tell them, "I'm here with you." They need to see that we've been with them not only in moments of joy, but also when they're weak, silent, confused, or even when they reject us.

In the activity guide, we see the image of a married couple. Perhaps, in your case, your wife is no longer the same since she became ill; she has lost her joy due to mental illness, is depressed, or distressed. It's not easy, we acknowledge that. But your love, your patience, your kind words, your faithfulness can be a true reflection of Jehovah's love for that person.

If this is your case, if you are caring for someone with these conditions and feel you can't go on, don't forget that Jehovah sees your efforts. He will sustain you, guide you, and give you strength when you no longer have it.

As we have seen, our words can be more than just sounds: they can be a balm, a bridge, an invisible hug for someone who needs it so much.

Let us continue to encourage others, care for them, and remember that sometimes a single word spoken in love can heal a deep wound.

You can be an instrument of Jehovah’s comfort.

SPIRITUAL GEMS: June 16-22, 2025

PROVERBS 18, Answers.
(10 mins.)

*Pr 18:18—Why were lots used in Bible times? (it-2 271-272)*

The proper motive for casting lots in Israel was to end a controversy. “The lot cast puts an end to even quarreling and separates men from one another, even the mighty.” It was not used in connection with sports, entertainment, or games of chance. There were no bets, no losses, no gains. It was not intended to enrich the temple or the priests, or to raise funds for charities. However, the Roman soldiers did have the purely lucrative aspect in mind when, as foretold in Psalm 22:18, they cast lots for Jesus’ garments.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

Casting lots is an ancient custom used to decide various matters. Like an oath, the casting of lots was accompanied by a prayer. This prayer was either spoken aloud or simply implied in the act, and thus they sought and relied on Jehovah's intervention. The word "lot" (Heb. goh ral) is used both literally and figuratively, with the idea of "part" or "portion."

*What spiritual gems from this week’s Bible reading would you like to share?*

Proverbs 18:1. If we are not careful, we could become estranged from Jehovah and his people. To avoid becoming isolated, we need to spend time with others who fear God's name and respect God's standards. We need to attend meetings at the Kingdom Hall whenever we can, to interact with the brothers and sisters in the congregation. And while we are at the meeting, we should open our minds and hearts, so to speak, so that what we hear touches our feelings.

Proverbs 18:9. These terms also apply to those who are united in a common cause and have similar goals and purposes. For example, King Hiram of Tyre called King Solomon “my brother,” not only because they shared his rank and position, but possibly also because of their mutual interests in supplying timber and other materials for the construction of the temple. Therefore, we do not want that kind of friendship that fosters what Jehovah hates.

Proverbs 18:10. In biblical times, towers were sometimes built in the desert to serve as refuge. Of course, anyone in danger had to run to them for safety. And those who want to receive the protection of God's name must do the same. It's not enough to repeat the word "Jehovah," for it is not an amulet. Rather, they must know the One who bears that name, trust in Him, and live according to His righteous standards. Jehovah assures us that if we trust in Him, He will be like a strong tower that will protect us. How good Jehovah is!

Proverbs 18:11. Material possessions are useful and necessary, but we are bound to be sorely disappointed if we imagine that security and happiness depend on them. Consider, for example, what happened in September 2009, when torrential rains flooded 80% of the city of Manila, Philippines. Were those with many possessions safe? One wealthy man who lost much in the disaster said, “The floods have put us all on the same level; rich and poor are suffering from the same problems.” It’s easy to imagine that material possessions provide us with real protection and security, but that’s not the reality.

Proverbs 18:12. These are days when Jehovah's people are being tested. It is almost as if we were strangers in a foreign land. The gap between true and false worship grows ever deeper and wider. We all suffer humiliation to some degree, but just as Jesus was comforted and strengthened by the joy set before him, so we too can overcome trials by remembering the final outcome. The Bible gives us this advice: “Humble yourselves in the sight of Jehovah, and he will lift you up.” When you find yourself under a severe test, think of these words: “Humility comes before glory.” Remember, too, that Jehovah does not fail.

Proverbs 18:13. If you have suffered an injustice, ask yourself: Do I know all the details of why the person acted that way? Were they under a lot of pressure? Did they do it without realizing it? Sometimes we may think someone had bad intentions, but in reality they were just making a mistake. Therefore, knowing the reason for an act is important so that from Jehovah's perspective, we don't commit another injustice.

Proverbs 18:14. To successfully cope with illness, a positive attitude is necessary. The Bible says, “A man’s spirit can bear his illness, but a wounded spirit, who can bear it?” Negative thoughts and feelings make recovery more difficult, something Jason experienced firsthand.

Proverbs 18:15. However, note that understanding is also required—the ability to analyze a matter, to discern or understand the connections between its various parts and the whole. This is the case with facts related to places mentioned in the Bible. For example, most of us know where Egypt is, but to what extent do we understand the comment that Abraham left Egypt and traveled to the Negeb, then to Bethel, and then to Hebron? Do you understand the relationship between these places?

Proverbs 18:17. Let's imagine a brother approaches an elder to share a problem he's having with someone in his family or congregation. What will the overseer do? First, he will listen carefully; he will avoid automatically siding with the offended party and will show him, through the Word of God, the steps he can take to restore peace. These cases contain an important lesson for the elders: before making any judgment, they must be well informed and, as Paul advised, avoid favoritism at all costs.

Proverbs 18:21. We too can do a lot of damage with our tongues. A few ill-timed remarks about a young woman's weight can lead her down the path of depression. A thoughtless repetition of some slander can ruin a lifelong friendship. Therefore, we must control our tongues.

SONG 8 Jehovah Is Our Refuge

“Choose for Yourselves . . . Whom You Will Serve”

“As for me and my household, we will serve Jehovah.”—JOSH. 24:15.

FOCUS To remind us of the reasons why we have chosen to serve Jehovah.

========================================================================

1. What must we do to be genuinely happy, and why? (Isaiah 48:17, 18)

To be truly happy, we must serve and obey Jehovah, as Isaiah 48:17, 18 indicates. This is necessary because, although Jehovah created us with impressive abilities, he did not give us the ability to govern ourselves or to decide what is right or wrong.

2. What does Satan want us to believe, and how has Jehovah responded to that lie?

Satan wants us to believe the lie that we can be happy without Jehovah and that we have the ability to govern ourselves. To respond to this falsehood, Jehovah has allowed humanity to experience the consequences of self-rule for a time. The bad results of human rule are evident: suffering, inequality, and chaos in the world.

WHY JESUS CHOSE TO SERVE JEHOVAH

3. What did Satan offer Jesus, and what decision did Jesus make?

Satan offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for a single act of worship. Jesus, however, decided to reject the offer and replied, “Get behind me, Satan! For it is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”

4, 5. What are some reasons why Jesus chose to serve Jehovah?

Jesus chose to serve Jehovah because he loves him deeply and knows that only he deserves our worship. He also recognized that Jehovah is generous, trustworthy, and always tells the truth. Furthermore, Jesus understood that his loyalty would bring great benefits: it would sanctify his Father's name and help end the suffering caused by Satan.

WHY JEHOVAH DESERVES TO BE WORSHIPPED

6, 7. Why don't many people serve Jehovah? Why does Jehovah deserve our worship?

Many people don't serve Jehovah simply because they don't know him. As the apostle Paul explained in Athens, Jehovah is the one who gives us life, breath, and everything. As our Creator, he is the only one who truly deserves our worship.

8. What would Jehovah never do?

Jehovah would never force anyone to serve him. Although he has the power to do so, he wants us to serve him out of love, and he has given many proofs of his love for us. He even empowers us to help others come to know him and cares for us through the organization and loving overseers.

9. How does Jehovah demonstrate his love?

Jehovah demonstrates his love even for those who don't believe in him, giving them the necessities of life and enjoyment, such as family, friends, and the fruits of their labor. This shows that he is a kind and loving God who cares for all humanity without exception.

WHY WE CHOOSE TO SERVE JEHOVAH

10. (a) What is the main reason we serve Jehovah? (Matthew 22:37)

The main reason we serve Jehovah is because we love him with all our hearts, as Jesus said in Matthew 22:37. The more we know him, the more we are drawn to his beautiful qualities.

10. (b) How has Jehovah’s patience helped you? (Psalm 103:13, 14)

Jehovah's patience has helped me greatly, because it shows me that He understands my limitations and is willing to give me time to improve. This motivates me to continue striving to serve Him with a sincere heart.

11. What are some reasons why we choose to serve our heavenly Father?

We choose to serve Jehovah because it is the right thing to do, and because our loyalty produces valuable results: we sanctify his name, prove Satan a liar, and bring joy to our Father. Furthermore, we have the wonderful hope of serving him forever.

12, 13. What do we learn from Jane and Pam's experience?

Jane and Pam's experience teaches us that it is possible to develop a deep love for Jehovah from an early age, a love that endures over time. Despite difficulties, such as peer pressure, these sisters remained steadfast in their decision to serve Jehovah. Thanks to what they learned from the Bible, they avoided falling into harmful practices such as drugs or sexual immorality. Both dedicated themselves more fully to service, becoming pioneers while caring for their aging parents.

14. How can we defend Jehovah's name? (See also the images.)

We can defend Jehovah's name by speaking well of Him and respectfully correcting the lies others tell, just as we would defend a dear friend. We too want to honor Jehovah with our words and actions, showing that we serve Him wholeheartedly.

ILLUSTRATION

Series of images: 1. A woman sees a group of apostates protesting outside a regional assembly. 2. Next, the woman speaks with a couple preaching from a cart.

Will you defend Jehovah’s name? (See paragraph 14.)

15. What blessings did the apostle Paul experience after changing his life goals? (Philippians 3:7, 8)

The apostle Paul changed his life goals to please Jehovah, and this brought him many blessings. Although he left a prominent position, he gained something far greater: a happy life and the hope of ruling with Christ. Like him, we will never regret putting Jehovah first.

16. What does Julia's experience teach us? (See also the images.)

Julia's experience teaches us that centering our lives on serving Jehovah, even when it means sacrificing personal goals or talents, brings blessings and happiness both now and in the future. Although she left behind a promising career in music, she has no regrets. After more than 30 years, she feels happy and confident that Jehovah will fulfill the desires of her heart.

ILLUSTRATION

Images that represent Julia's decision. 1. She is singing on a stage in front of a crowd. 2. She is singing with her husband at a meeting at the Kingdom Hall.

There is no better life than focusing on serving Jehovah! (See paragraph 16.)

KEEP SERVING JEHOVAH

17. What does it mean for God's servants to live in the end times? And what about those who are not yet servants?

Living in the time of the end means that there is little time left for people to make the decision to serve Jehovah. For those of us who already do so, it means that even though we may face trials, they will be temporary because the fulfillment of Jehovah's promises will soon arrive.

18. What do Jehovah and Jesus want us to do?

Jehovah and Jesus desire that we follow them constantly and strive to be their faithful disciples. If we have been serving Jehovah for years, He wants us not to give up, but to continue forward with determination. Although serving God requires effort, it also brings great joy and blessings in the present, and the promise of eternal life in the future.

19. What do we learn from Gene’s experience?

Gene's experience teaches us that, although serving Jehovah may initially seem like missing out on certain things, it actually brings true happiness. He realized that living a double life wasn't fulfilling, and when he decided to serve Jehovah wholeheartedly, he began to see answers to his prayers and feel truly satisfied.

20. What are we determined to do?

We are determined to serve Jehovah with all our hearts, just as Joshua expressed when he said: “I and my household will serve Jehovah.”

WHAT WOULD YOU ANSWER?

Why did Jesus choose to serve Jehovah?

Jesus chose to serve Jehovah because he loved him deeply and knew that only he deserved worship. He also understood that his faithfulness would help sanctify his Father's name and end the suffering caused by Satan.

Why does Jehovah deserve to be worshipped?

Jehovah deserves our worship because he is our Creator, gives us life, everything we need, and shows us love, even when many do not believe in him. His beautiful qualities and generosity make him worthy of all our devotion.

Why do you choose to serve Jehovah?

This question is a bit more personal. Answer as you see fit. Here's a guideline:

I choose to serve Jehovah because I love him with all my heart and know that serving him is the right thing to do. It also makes me happy to know that my loyalty sanctifies his name, brings joy to his heart, and brings me closer to him every day.
