"The Story of the Nike people"

The Nike people are one of the oldest indigenous Igbo communities in Enugu State. They are regarded as the original owners of much of the land on which the modern city of Enugu now stands. The name Nike is commonly interpreted in Igbo as meaning "with strength" or "with power." �

According to Nike oral tradition, the community traces its ancestry to Anike, who is regarded as the founding ancestor. Tradition also links Anike with neighboring communities such as Egede and Affa through a shared maternal lineage, although these accounts are based on oral history rather than written historical records. �

Before colonial rule, the Nike people were renowned farmers, hunters, traders, and warriors. They cultivated yam, cocoyam, cassava, and other crops while protecting their territory with strategically located settlements. Historical accounts also describe their alliances with the Aro Confederacy, which played an important role in regional trade before British rule. �

The history of the Nike people changed forever in 1909, when British geologist Albert Kitson discovered coal in the nearby hills. The British colonial government acquired large areas of Nike land to establish coal mines, railways, and administrative buildings. This development led to the rapid growth of Enugu, which became famous as Nigeria's Coal City. �

Today, the Nike Kingdom consists of many villages and continues to preserve its traditional institutions under its monarch. The people remain proud of their cultural heritage, expressed through traditional dances, masquerades, the New Yam Festival, marriage customs, and respect for elders.
