STORY 01
The Money He Could Never Explain
Episode One
There was a joke among Grace's friends that she had won the husband lottery.
Whenever conversations drifted toward difficult marriages, someone would always say,
"Not everybody married like Grace."
She would laugh, shake her head and reply with the same sentence every time.
"Nobody's marriage is perfect. We just choose peace every day."
She believed those words.
She had been married to Daniel for eight years.
Their life was ordinary.
Not the kind people posted on social media.
There were no surprise vacations to Dubai.
No expensive anniversary gifts.
No matching luxury outfits for Sunday service.
Just two people who had slowly learnt how to become each other's home.
Daniel worked as an accountant for a construction company in Enugu.
Grace taught English at a private secondary school.
Between paying rent, supporting relatives and saving for the house they hoped to build one day, money was always tight.
Yet somehow...
They laughed often.
Every evening, Daniel returned home with roasted groundnuts from the old woman beside Ogbete Market because he knew Grace loved eating them while watching the evening news.
Grace, in return, never allowed him leave for work without breakfast, even on mornings she herself was running late.
Their love lived quietly.
It wasn't loud enough for Facebook.
But it was real.
Or so Grace believed.
That Tuesday began like every other Tuesday.
Daniel overslept.
By the time he woke up, he was already running late.
"My goodness. I have a meeting! Honey, why didn’t you wake me up?" he asked her.
Grace answered from the kitchen.
"Sorry dear. If you had told me about the meeting, I would have woken you up earlier. Besides you were sleeping so peacefully I didn’t want to disturb you."
"If my manager asks, tell him I had emergency malaria."
"You'll tell him yourself." Grace laughed.
He ran into the bathroom, freshened up and within minutes he was gone, leaving behind the familiar smell of his aftershave, taking with him the lunch Grace had packed for him.
Grace cleared the breakfast plates, washed the cups and began getting ready for school.
Then she heard it.
Ding.
Daniel's phone.
He had forgotten it on the dining table.
She picked it up, intending to call his other number with her own phone.
Before she could dial...
Another sound.
Ding.
A bank alert.
She frowned.
Normally she never looked at his notifications.
They had always respected each other's privacy.
But something caught her eye.
Debit Alert
₦250,000.
Her heart skipped.
Two hundred and fifty thousand naira?
She blinked.
Perhaps she had read it wrongly.
She looked again.
Amount Debited: ₦250,000.
Her stomach tightened.
That was almost half of Daniel's monthly salary.
She opened the message. It was a transfer Daniel had made just that morning.
How did he have the time to make a bank transfer when he was already running late to work, she muttered to herself.
The account name was unfamiliar.
Beatrice Okafor.
Grace searched her memory.
No aunt.
No cousin.
No family friend.
No colleague.
Nobody by that name.
She immediately told herself there had to be an explanation.
Maybe office business.
Maybe someone he owed.
Maybe...
Grace felt the colour drain from her face.
She knew exactly how much they had struggled over the previous month.
Just three nights earlier they had spent almost an hour discussing whether to postpone repairing the leaking roof because school fees for Daniel's younger brother were due.
Daniel had looked her in the eyes and said,
"Let's manage for one more month."
Now...
He had quietly transferred ₦250,000 to a woman she had never heard of.
Without telling her.
The entire drive to school felt unreal.
She taught two classes that morning but she couldn't remember a single thing she said.
During break time, her colleague, Ifeoma, sat beside her.
"You look pale."
Grace forced a smile.
"I'm just tired."
"You?"
Ifeoma laughed.
"You don't even know how to be tired."
Grace looked away.
If she spoke...
She feared she would cry.
By evening Daniel returned home carrying the usual paper bag of roasted groundnuts.
He smiled as he entered.
"Madam Teacher..." he called out to her.
Grace didn't answer.
He noticed immediately.
"What happened? What’s wrong?" he asked her.
She quietly placed his forgotten phone on the dining table.
"You left this."
Daniel sighed.
He reached for the phone.
Grace spoke softly.
"So... who is Beatrice Okafor?"
Daniel froze.
Not for one second.
Not for two.
Long enough for Grace to feel something inside her begin to break.
When he finally looked up...
His smile was gone.
