This sunday 3rd July 2022,on Soul Sistaz we look at the Topic: Increase in the rate of kidney related Diseases.

INTRODUCTION

More than 20 million Nigerians are living with kidney disease and no fewer than 20,000 of the number are coming down with End Stage Kidney Disease yearly requiring dialysis or/and transplant to stay alive.

Medical experts say 100 persons per every million population, that is, at least 20,000 people yearly get to the stage where they need dialysis and or transplant. They said it costs N600, 000 monthly to put one patient on dialysis monthly and over N10 million to perform kidney transplant in Nigeria.

The question is what are the causes of kidney related diseases?

INTRODUCTION

SCD according to WHO is the sixth commonest cause of death among Nigerian children, as an estimated 6.4 per cent, or no fewer than five deaths are from the disease.People with the sickle cell traits who are also referred to as carriers of the disease are those who have one sickle haemoglobin gene (S) and one normal gene (A), thus AS.

SCD, termed an ailment of the blacks, is one of the most common genetic diseases worldwide, with between seven to nine per cent of the world’s population as sufferers and it predominates the sub-Saharan Africa, East Mediterranean areas, Middle East, and India. Thus, the high prevalence rate in Nigeria, being the most populous black nation in the world is not accidental.

As we join the world in commemorating World Sickle Cell Day, we’ll be talking to a sickle cell survivor and a doctor with focus on public knowledge and raising awareness of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and the struggles people with the disease and their families go through.

INTRODUCTION

Just as the breast cancer alert has become a sort of mantra for women all over the world, so should the call for the awareness of prostate cancer – a disease that’s often overlooked but affects thousands of over 50s every year.

In Nigeria, Prostate cancer has affected more than 40 per cent of the men in the age group of 40 and above. An increasing number of deaths on account of prostate cancer are noted mainly because of unawareness, lack of timely treatment and lack of medical infrastructure.

Many issues plague the Prostate Cancer Treatment in Nigeria. Insurance does cover its treatment, and family members have to pay for it with their funds, causing an immense financial burden.

it has been found that Western Africa has the fifth-highest risk for prostate cancer mortality in the world and Nigeria has the largest population and economy in this region. How saddening! Prostate cancer for Nigerian men is both the most common and most deadly cancer with 32.8 cases and 16.3 deaths per 100,000 men. This according to the study, is more than double the death rate in North America with an estimated 80% of Nigerians incurable on the diagnosis. Why is this so?

Cohabitation is more of a simulation of day-to-day married life, the test-running of partner’s patience, temperament and actual forbearance of each other. Living together before marriage is becoming more common among many couples, and the question of whether it is good or bad is on everyones minds.

The Nigerian society largely frowns on couples who live together before marrying. This is majorly due to morals and religious beliefs. So, regardless of these moral and religious standards held up against cohabitation before marriage, it seems many people still consider cohabitation a better way to judge a partner’s suitability for marriage than the traditional courting from close quarters [or from a distance as the case may be] and hoping for the best in marriage.

The inability of some couples to bear children has been a major cause of broken marriages, Infertility is a growing problem in Africa and affects the lives of many couples. As a health problem, it is largely culturally and socially constructed in such a way that even though it affects a couple it is the woman who bears the burden.

The burden of infertility is compounded by the fact that at the national programme level it is underplayed as a problem, the main focus being on fertility control. This is a situation that needs to be redressed so that those who are infertile, regardless of their numbers, receive the attention they require to experience quality life.

Every Child is special But what do we mean when we say "Children with special needs"? This means any Child who might need extra help because of a medical, emotional, or learning problem. These kids have special needs because they might need medicine, therapy, or extra help in school or in things other kids don't typically need or only need once in a while.

Special health care needs or developmental disabilities range from Down Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Cleft Lip and Palate, Cystic Fibrosis just to mention a few.

* How do these conditions arise?

* How should you handle it as a parent? What should be your attitude?

* How can the society and government be more supportive?

We will x- ray these questions and more.
